Appears that it is the case unfortunately.
Loaded up my game, went a few rooms away and selected quit from the menu - starting again takes me back to the original save room, so lost that progress.
Did it again, but instead just pressed the home button and closed the software from the switch main menu, and the same thing on startup - takes you back to the save room again, losing progress.
So, basically, it looks like whenever you fire it up, it looks for the last save room you saved in.

Just tap the power button once to whack it into sleep mode without doing anything else.

Yeah, I'd expect sleep mode to work fine on the Switch. Nintendo are/were pretty decent at implementing that for Switch and 3DS.

Yeah, sleep mode will probably work I guess if you leave the game in the background. I never do that though - always close everything. Why? The ability to just whack it in standby mode is brilliant. Only time mines switched off is when the battery runs out. |

Yeah, it's great. Never had an issue with it on mine.
It's much more reliable than something like quick resume on Xbox.

It's just me - I can't imagine doing a couple of hours of progress and then put it in sleep mode without saving it. I'd half expect a brief power cut and the whole thing is lost, whereas if I save, I know I've fucked saved and sleep peacefully  |

Wait... You can jump in morph ball mode?! Thought it was only via bombs too. /edit Sounds like it's been a thing since the Wii trilogy which introduced waggle to jump... Every day is a school day! Haha. Glad I’m not the only one. Ignored a few locations because of that, thinking it was an upgrade I’d get later. |

I think it unlocks when you get bombs, so not like it can sequence break or anything.
Real men do the double bomb jumps in Magmoor the old fashioned way.

The exploring (and remembering where everything is) is part of the fun (for me). I also got the space boots yesterday (and then later on died at the hands of a boss in Phendrana Drifts - figured out too late what I was supposed to do...)

Look, if I had played this back in the day, I might have the nostalgia element from remembering where everything is and doing all the wandering around. But I did not play this back in the day, so I can't really coast on memory and nostalgia.
And the genre has since had 20 years worth of refinements and conveniences, of which this game has... few. No map marking, no fast travel, no autosaves and limited normal saves. They've clearly spent a lot of time updating the graphics, why not throw a few options to people who don't have the entire map burned into their memories?

I feel it a little too, but I've just got "get to a save room" hard wired into my head. Least we've got sleep mode as well. And it's not as punishing gameplay wise as say, a souls game or anything |

I've only just noticed that if you use a missile and it explodes fairly near you, you see a reflection of Samus's face in the blast. I thought I was hallucinating for a minute.
