Apparently it’s a great update to one of the greatest games of all time.
I just wanted to say how irritated I’m getting when reading articles and reviews that claim Wii was the last hardware you could play it on. I bought Prime Trilogy as a download on Wii U and had a VERY satisfying replay on that.
Glad they have kept this game alive. The second game also deserves restoration.

I think everyone is trying to forget the WiiU happened I had.

Cracking update . Loving the revamped controls. Makes it a tad easier.

Heh, I have one in the loft with an unplayed MP trilogy digital download on it. I'd rather just emulate than get that disappointment of a console back out.
It had some cracking games, but most of the good ones have been ported to switch by now. I might have to look at selling it now that you mention it.

Whilst I think the twin stick is pretty good, I find it a little awkward to change beam canon now. I'm about 6 hours in, and it's starting to get to the point where switching beams mid-boss will become required, and the twin stick layout has me a little concerned about how those moments will feel to play.

I thought the Wii U was a stupid piece of shit marketed with total incompetence, but bought one super cheap in 2018, tracked down the good controller for it, and stacked it with a bunch of classics from that amazing download catalogue. Played some faves for a month then gave it to someone I was crushing on for Christmas. Very regrettable, I’d still be playing it.
Couldn’t believe they didn’t just have virtual console immediately on Switch. Not really interested in their subscription service.

The12thMonkey yeah, that was one of my few gripes with it. It gets pretty nasty with the colour coded space pirates and fusion metroids later on. When I played it on Steam Deck I think I had a button bound to cycle through the beams instead which worked a bit better than holding imo. Would've been nice if they just allowed you to tap to cycle and hold to select beams. The charge beam double/triple shooting before charging was also baffling. How that got past QA is beyond me... A nice QoL change would've been to change doors to blue after you've opened them once, as that just exaggerated how annoying switching beams is. I just want to stay on melty beam permanently as soon as I get it, damnit!

How do you switch beams?

Hold X and use the left stick. It just doesn't work in a firefight, or anywhere really as you just stop in your tracks to do it.
Original in comparison had them mapped to just swiping the right stick IIRC which was perfect for quickly switching any time.

Yeah, it does feel awkward. Omega Pirate is not going to be a fun experience because of it!
And the charge beam - actually have to train myself to look away to charge up a super missile if I don't want to alert napping pirates that they're about to get splatted.

I played through Metroid Dread again as I'm holding off on Prime for a couple more weeks. Its so, so good. It controls so well and is designed to be replayed. It gets better with every playthrough. Probably my 2nd favourite in the series after Super.
I wonder if this Prime remaster will change my mind?

The game has options to use the original control scheme though, right?

Not tested myself, but, IIRC, digital foundry mentioned it supports many schemes including motion controls, twin stick, gyro and the original...

Yeah, there are multiple options. I played through most of it on the couch with a pro controller though, so only really had the option of dual stick or classic. The benefits to dual stick far outweigh that clunky beam switching, so I'd still definitely prefer it over classic.

Has the music been remastered? I loved some of the Prime soundtrack.

It's the same soundtrack, pretty much untouched from what I can tell. It just hasn't been compressed to buggery to fit on a GameCube disc.

Picked this up today and keen to dive into it. Bounced off it a bit when I got it for GameCube aged around 10 so interested to see how I get in with it 20 years later.

Enjoying the first few hours of this - question for those in the know:
In each level, are all the required upgrades to fully explore each area found within the same level?
More simply - I’m in Chozo ruins, can I find all the upgrades needed to fully explore Chozo ruins within Chozo ruins? Or will I have to move on to another level and then come back to fully explore?

Nope, you'll soon be hopping between areas to get the next bit of gear and then back to where you were. When you need to go to a different area you'll got a beacon/map marker after a while.

You’ll get beacons/map markers?
So far I’ve not had much direction really on where I’m going/what I’m actually doing (other than collecting upgrades).

You'll know when it happens. You get a "beacon received" message and it prompts you to open the map and marks where you need to go next.

I’d actually forgotten how linear this and Fusion were when they came out. It’s not a bad thing, but definitely a change from the first three.
I’m waiting on the Physical release for this one because I’m out of space on my SD card, so it’s nice that Switch doesn’t install games into storage if you buy the carts.

I think it's approx after 20 mins of not getting to where the next upgrade is. You will have had the first one for free, when you enter the Chozo Ruins at the start and get the pointer to the Missile Launcher.

Really enjoying a return to this but if they were prepared to update the controls to align it with modern games they could have done the same with the save system. It can be absolutely brutal having to redo huge sections when you die. More than once I’ve died after killing a boss but before the next save point. That’s just bad design. Even From aren’t that harsh.

Yeah that's a bit of an oversight, I have limited time gaming and if that happens to me I'd probably end up just switching off, possibly never returning to it.

They don't do that after the Ridley boss fight, do they?
