Yeah that's why I've got the OLED coming. I'm patiently waiting...

Trying to decide whether to dig out the GC or the Wii to replay Metroid. I guess it makes sense to do the Wii as it plays GC games, plus the Wii release - Echoes? Or, just fork out £35 for the Switch version.

Fork out £35 you tight arse. That is like one pint a five guys burger, chips and a shake.

Yeah, definitely fork it out. Only £31.85 at hit.
I keep meaning to dig my Wii or Wii U out to give Other M a fair go. I'm just hoping I remembered to take the batteries out of the wiimotes...

Don't do it! Other M was awful then and it'll still be awful now. The only Metroid I started and never finished.

Haha, same here. I've finally calmed down enough about what they did with Samus' character, so thought I'd give it another chance.

I got to Magmoor Caverns yesterday after taking my time in Chozo Ruins. The sound design in Chozo Ruins is amazing, especially when playing with a (good) headset. Same, though I’ve had to do a hasty retreat since I’m not equipped to deal with the heat.

Its not a classic, but I would play it again.

Ok, so I think I've about finished Chozo Ruins. It's a good game, I can see why people love it.
HOWEVER
-Is there no fast travel between save points? I find myself getting lost quite easily, and the map (while very cool) often does not help
-Speaking of the map, I would like to be able to put markers on it. There are ever so many "can't get to this item without some sort of upgrade" things that I apparently just... Z have to remember the location of?
-It really is a bit dark in places, even on an OLED. And there aren't any gamma options! Why not?
I recognise that some of those are conveniences that modern games have made me expect. But they would be nice all the same.

I'm playing handheld with the brightness at max, so no, I don't think there's much I can do as far as the switch goes.

You can use visors to see in the dark iirc, but I don't think you'd want to be doing that all the time. Sounds like it's a side effect of them changing the graphics.

I'm sure I will check it out at some point as the reviews are all ridiculously good about it.

I don't think there's ever been fast travel in Metroid. You'd miss the instantly re-spawning enemies! And I think the argument back in the day that being forced to memorize the location of places you missed was part of the Metroid lived experience. Memories tell me that GameFAQs was very helpful.

Yeah, the best part of these games is getting lost and trying to remember where you saw items and alternate routes. That whole ball ache is a huge part of the appeal.

Yeah no, Dark Souls had the advantage of not every corridor looking the same.
Which isn't to say that I don't like this! I just want the option of one or two modern conveniences. Getting lost is fine. Losing lots of progress because you can't find a save room, is less fine.

You'll eventually get to know the whole map like the back of your hand and will be traversing it in no time at all.

I'd argue its hard to get lost in Dark Souls, but I've only played the first one. The level design feels like a bunch of interconnected corridors, but they are often long and linear, so when they do link up its more suprising than confusing. They have a save system is similar though, in that you're expected to go quite far between saves, creating a sense of dread the longer you go without finding a save point.
This is much easier though. As long as you take your time, look around before moving and keep an eye on your health. Some of the upcoming save points can be predictable too. Usually at the start of a larger 'puzzle room' or just off one of the larger opening areas of each environment, etc... Each map seems to follow the same basic rules of layout.

Hold on. So B and L are both jump when you're on foot, but Y is jump when you're in morph ball mode? I didn't even know you could jump in morph ball mode. I've been jumping by using the bombs. When was this a thing?
I really am rusty. It has been years since my last playthrough.

Wait... You can jump in morph ball mode?! Thought it was only via bombs too.
/edit Sounds like it's been a thing since the Wii trilogy which introduced waggle to jump... Every day is a school day!

I located the Wii and a Wii Scart cable in the loft.. Found the wiimotes. Couldn't find the old GC controllers, but I did find both my Wavebirds and one of the receivers. So, Wii is now set up ready for a Wavebird test. Just need to get back up into the loft to locate Metroid Prime in the big box of GC games. Had a quick go on RE4 - still have the save with infinite rocket launcher. Sweet!

Pretty sure my wavebird and a memory card were AWOL when I last had a tidy up and tried to get stuff into the right boxes after our house move. Also have a feeling my Wii U is missing a power cable, so it'll be a fun afternoon in the loft if I want to set either machine up.

My wii is still set up under the tv and we use it regularly. Benefit of wii-style graphics is that they haven't really aged.

It's annoying that I couldn't find the GC controllers - I rarely throw anything away, so they must be there somewhere!

I still have my wii going all the time too. There is only so long before I have to play house of the dead overkill and/or eternal darkness.
Anyway, fired this up last night on the switch. Absolutely lovely! Twin stick method is fine for me, and that was all I was concerned about.
What was *more* concerning was me trying to find a save point after too many smokes at 1 in the morning with work the next day! Was buggered if I was losing that progress. It's starting to come back to me though. Just rambling through Chozo at the minute, trying to remember where everything is (no chance). Got missile and standard morph ball and that's your lot at the moment.
Sounds, movement, combat and visuals are all great though. Everything feels just right.

Tbh, I've not tried after hearing on here that someone had lost progress.
I'll try it now
