You can go back to your ship and save after the Ridley fight, which you'll probably want to do anyway to top up missiles. There are some nasty stretches in the game without save points. The bit leading up to the power bomb got me on my playthrough
Still bloody love it of course, but they definitely could've added a few QoL changes like boss checkpoints.

I had a grand total of 4 health left after getting the power bomb (from all but 2 of the energy tank upgrades)! That slog through the mines is a real test, and it won't unlock the door to the save point in the bomb romb until you actually get the upgrade...

A simple ‘save and quit’ mechanic should really be standard in all games. Life happens and you should always be able to just stop playing and pick up again where you left off.

I don't think even Dread has that, metroid has stuck pretty rigidly to the Super formula. The GBA ones got around that by making the save points really close together.
I pretty much relied on the sleep mode with Dread.

Excuse my ignorance as I've never played it or any metroid game. Why is this good? I watched a video or two of some gameplay and it looks very very meh. Is it something I would have needed to play during it's original release?
Always up for another switch game though that isn't a Zelda.

Depends on what you expect when you play a game from a first person perspective, I guess. It's not a shooter, really. It's a puzzle game. The core mechanics are showing their age, as folks have pointed out with the save point structure, but I'd say the atmosphere is one of the finest in games.

I'm assuming there's not an 'easy' mode included in this? It's probably in my top three games ever, and I'd love to go through it again but just don't have the time or patience these days for long traversals without save points or those punishing last few bosses.

I've wondered several times why no-one has really made any other games like it. It's really more like a first person zelda (ocarina / wind waker at least). Exploring an abandoned* world with great atmosphere, uncovering lore and unlocking abilities to get into new areas. * this bit isn't very zelda

rich - yeah, there's an easy mode. You can't change difficulty in game so need to pick it from the start.

I don't remember any saving woes, but it has been about 15 years since I last played them through. I'm sure it seems worse after Metroid Dread, which has save rooms every 2 minutes.

It's one of the most immersive, atmospheric games I've ever played - you truly feel alone on Tallon IV.

I can still remember the day I drove down to Toys 'r' Us and picked up a clearance Gamecube (the golden one) with half a dozen games including Metroid Prime; all for the princely sum of £99.
I got home. Fired up Metroid. Came up for air about three days later. Truly one of the most immersive games I've ever played, and cemented my love for the Gamecube.

Yep. Walking into Phenandra Drifts for the first time (not sure on the spelling) was still one of my top 3 gaming memories of all time.

Gone for this as well. I still have the physical metroid prime trilogy for the original wii, and I still have my wii, but I do fancy the remaster.
I'm slightly worried about the controls as the wii version was top notch, but I'll see how I get on with the twin stick method. And easy mode probably.
I am definitely looking forward to revisiting Chozo ruins and Phenandra drifts though for sure.

I have the trilogy on Wii U (and the Gamecube disk but no Gamecube...) but I really couldn't get used to the motion controls (I played the first one for a bit during Christmas and I still didn't like it). I definitely liked the Gamecube controls better. But yes, I ordered the physical edition, which will hopefully drop in my mailbox today or tomorrow

Oh my! It does look stunning doesn't it? Played a bit until I got planetside and Tallon IV looks amazing! I spent a good 10-15 minutes just walking/jumping around admiring the environment.
Also, thank goodness for the twin-stick control layout. I started with the OG GameCube one, but that definitely was too long ago 😁

I finally have my copy of Prime! A day early, so it has interupted a run through Metroid 2. But, it has got me in the mood to complete as many Metroid games as I can this year. I guess I'll see how I feel after this one.

This is amazing, it plays just how I remember it.
Trying to take my time so I can savour the experience again.

Can confirm it looks great on an OLED I've never actually played it before, so I'm excited to see what the fuss is about.

Just obtained the Varia Suit. This is great. It looks great, plays great, and I have forgotten just enough of the game to be kept on my toes.
I do feel like I am playing more slowly than back in the day. The environments are so much richer, so I am having to stop to take things in. Secrets are slightly more disguised, for example. Not that I am complaining. There is so much visual polish.

Oh fuck, it’s one of the most exquisitely well-designed games of all time that only gets better on repeat plays. I remember the first time I thought there was a lot of backtracking, because I was never sure where to go, but once you do know it turns out you can go through the whole thing while rarely going somewhere you’ve been before.

Yeah, I've never been much of a Metroid guy. When I had a SNES I had to choose between Zelda and Super Metroid, and I chose Zelda. So I never really got enough nostalgia to be hyped about a new one coming out, and as such never really played one until yesterday!
It's pretty good!

I got to Magmoor Caverns yesterday after taking my time in Chozo Ruins. The sound design in Chozo Ruins is amazing, especially when playing with a (good) headset.

Started this up on a Switch Lite as waiting for a Joy-con to come back from repair, and hoo boy it is dark. I died in the escape sequence at the beginning as I couldn't see anything most of the time, and some of the doors, not the usual blue ones, were non-obvious. I couldn't make out the little swarming creatures at all other than relying on the targeting cursor, and spent a ton of time just looking at black. Maybe some of it is also that it's easier to look the wrong way with dual stick control
