How the hell did Goodnight Sweetheart manage to run for 59 episodes anyway? I remember it being touted as a comedy, complete with a laugh track (or whatever) for at least a while, but it was at most a decidedly shit romantic drama.

Richard Herring has some fairly strong feelings on that show.

Who wouldn’t use the power of time travel to go back to the Blitz and shag a barmaid?

It was such an insane concept and that's probably what kept it going. But it's probably mostly forgotten now.

And I'm not saying Danny Boyle is a hack but it definitely did the 'claim the beatles are your own songs' thing first.

It’s going to be shite, but so were Joanie Loves Chachi, Baywatch Nights and Joey. Terrible spin-offs are a necessity for pub quiz questions so we should all be grateful.

By the way, speaking of terrible spin-offs, did you know Cheers had another spin-off about Carla’s ex-husband called The Tortellis? Such a weird thing to spin off.

Dave Chappelle starred in a Home Improvement spin off, somehow

Brits go mad for a bit of light hearted emotional manipulation, nothing wrong with normalising men who live double lives, getting into jolly japes when lying about why you disappear for weeks on end

Wings and St Elsewhere are also part of the same shared universe. There's an episode of Wings where Frasier and Lilith show up, and a St Elsewhere one where they go off to Cheers and get verbal from Carla, among other references.

They were more completely different shows that those characters visited though. They’re not really spin offs, more tv execs shoehorning in guest appearances for views.

I think Happy Days had the most spin offs. There were so many shows that tracked back to that. Some of them were also really good like Mork and Mindy. Quite liked Laverne and Shirley as well. That used to be on every morning on Channel Four before school.

I saw Mork and Mindy before seeing the Happy Days episodes. That show reeeeeally ran out of steam, fast. It feels way more dated than it actually is.

One of my absolute favourite ‘I don’t know why I find that so funny’ things is when Skinner walks in on Mrs Krabappel and says “I must have the wrong classroom. I was looking for my girlfriend, not Pam Dawber”

That used to be on every morning on Channel Four before school. I watched loads of Laverne and Shirley when the Paramount/Comedy Central channel started on Sky in the mid 90s. They had old classics like L&S, Taxi, and repeats of SNL. I was in my element with that channel!

Lucy Mangan also claimed Hijack was “brilliant” and “impeccable”, with “majestic” performances in a 4/5 review

While we're going into shared universes, Friends was in the same universe as Mad About You. Starring Helen Hunt and a baddy from Aliens.
Could we work Frasier into that? Have Chandler turn up as a client...

When you go down the rabbit hole it can get crazy. X-Files and Breaking Bad are technically in the same universe, and because X-Files also links back to various other properties due to Detective Munch, canonically, Better Call Saul and The Wire are in the same universe as Arrested Development.
And that doesn’t even get into the St. Elsewhere chaos.

Incredibly tangentially though, it's not like they ever talked about the bluths in law and order is it.

Are we calling this Frasier 2023 Season 1, or Frasier Season 12?
Anyways...
Episode 1
I want to reach through the screen, comb Nicholas Lyndhursts' fringe back and scream at him that a man of his age is under no obligation to look that fucking drab.
From what little of David was seen, he seemed like the part had been written as Niles and his son is functioning as a stand in.
Eve seems like she may have the potential to be the new Roz.
The audience laughter may have felt a little forced, possibly even overdubbed for greater volume. I mean, I laughed a little, but not a lot. It was in no way offensively bad or anything, just a little pedestrian.
And then that last shot. They got me. Goddamn, they got me. It was worth watching for that.
Episode 2
I like the air hockey table.
Couple of good lines in this one. Few more characters introduced, in fact everything with the firefighters at the bar was good. I thought they were going to leave a certain plot hole hanging, but then they addressed it in the next scene. Which was nice.
