Ikea are the only place you don't buy them like a blind bag so its worth a trip if youre fussy like me.
Although my actual answer is the one you don't want. I went through dozens of pillows trying to find the right one to the point the wife would make fun of me until one day my gran got a tempur mattress and free memory foam pillow with it but gave it to me because she didn't even want to try it.
It, dear readers, is the end game pillow. Of the dozens I tried, it is the comfiest, most supportive and the one I have got the best nights sleep on in all my years of searching.

Ack. Thanks Bongo!
I it might because I have shit pillows that I end up shifting my pillow around during the night. Does the memory foam retain its shape or does it easily squish to the new position I’ll undoubtedly move it to? I think maybe I have the wrong idea of what they are - I don’t want my pillow to have “memory”.
Not sure why I have such an instinctive hatred of them tbh.

These aren't bad for £18, and they've retained their shape longer than others I've had:

So, I have a couple of 'normal' pillows on top of it when Im propping myself up reading or watching telly, then rest my head on the tempur when its time to get serious. Its contoured so it supports your neck and whatnot but, no, its not like a normal pillow in that you beat it up into a shape to stuff under your head. Its fairly rigid.

Thanks - that’s helpful. I need to pop round your house and try it for a few nights. Assume that ok?

I’ve done the £100 John Lewis down pillows and they’re shit in my experience, they flatten to a wafer after a few months. The cheapo 85% feather ones they do are much better, they return to shape and support after a quick plumpty flumpf. Had our current ones for about 6 years and only just thinking about replacing now

How often are you washing the pillow? Not the case.

I've had my Tempur pillow for years. They are damn expensive, but so worth it.

How often are you washing the pillow? Not the case. This is the annoying thing - we’d only had them for about five days before the stink got really bad. We washed them - according to instructions - and it made the stench worse. John Lewis rep told me that “all down pillows have an odour as they’re a natural product” which enraged me. These things fucking reek. I’m assuming the feathers weren’t well enough washed and the stink is duck/goose shit. Either way, John Lewis can fuck themselves.

Oh, hullo, are we talking pillows?? Gentlemen, forget your synthetic memory foam, forget your Polish goose down, there is only one kind of pillow you should be getting and that is an organic buckwheat hull pillow. It's the bamboo pants of pillows. No, I'll go further: it's the air fryer of pillows. Seriously, it will solve your bad neck, your insomnia, your impotence, your tragic derailed career. browfarmonlinestore.co.uk/product-category/organic-buckwheat-pillows/

You'll also win the nightly pillow fight with your significant other welding one of those.

My wife has a contoured Tempur. I don't like the contours and have an Emma latex one. Which is fine and you can swap layers in and out for your preferred height but it's not as god as my old Dreams latex one which was stolen by my daughter. I am very interested in a buckwheat one for next time though.

You can even make some lovely Soba noodles in the air fryer from your pillow as you scavenge for food after the apocalypse

On a similar note, we need a new mattress, any recs? Well obviously the only real option is a Swedish Hästens horsehair mattress. Ahahaha seriously I know people who will actually tell you that but we got an Emma off that internet and I really like it. YMMV. (Their customer service is shit though.)

The more pocket springs the better imo. Memory foam topper if that's your thing.

We had a Dreams Beds Superstore mattress for years, one of their own brand name orthopaedic things with a zillion springs which was the upper end of their pricing. I think pretty much all mattresses made in the U.K. come from the same factory anyway, that was bloody great. We went super king when it needed replacing, got a John Lewis one for even more wedge and I don’t think it’s as good, but still decent enough

An organic buckwheat hull pillow could help him with that.

Although he’s probably slurped his way around all the worst possible soba noodle bars in Japan and taken pictures to prove it 😔

Give em a go, apparently they're pretty standard in Japan, can't speak to that but I do find them very comfy (as long as they're not overfilled - but you can easily add or remove the hulls to find your sweet spot).
edit - I don't know about that online shop btw, that was just a link I googled, but they seem to be quite widely available

Wait that's a serious recommendation? Yes sir, yes it is, I've been sleeping on buckwheat hull pillows for the last ten years, they've really helped my posture.

I've heard in the past about people putting hops in their pillow to aid sleep. Has anyone here tried it?

I have them fermented and in liquid form and definitely helps me sleep. Can wake up with a headache on occasion though.
