Oh, thanks for the heads up. I loved the earlier demo, right up my street, and am counting down the days til next Friday. This will help.

Finished the first level. Boss took a few tries but it’s that classic Nioh feeling that once you beat it once you feel like you can beat it very consistently. For all that it loosened the patty window the game in return expects you to do it a lot! I've been murdered by Zhang Liang about five times now. It's, as always, one part lack of skill and one part lack of patience. But do you have any suggested strategies?

Okay, just got him almost all the way down. I think I've got to de-Eldenize my approach and actually do some blocking rather than dodging (or attempting to) all the time.

The big thing is getting the parry timings down, but remember that you can just hold down the block button while trying to parry his normal strings. Makes the whole thing much lower stress.

Cheers, that's great advice. My sons have taken over the consoles (bloody Friday evening) but hope to crack it tomorrow.

The second stage is much, much easier than the first. Didn't die once.

Where the fuck do you go after killing the tiger thing? I'm just going round and round in circles.

Found it. Really irritating level design.

Like a complete twat, I was stuck on the first boss for almost an hour, thinking I don’t understand how to deflect. Turned out the heavy chest armor I had found put me at 70,x% equipment weight, which seems to make deflecting impossible.
Edit: went down at the first go once I got rid of it.

Thee levels seem pretty linear but with a lot of dead ends with treasure and flags. Looks like there will be some backtracking, too. I found a bit that won’t let you through because you’re too under levelled.
It do like it a lot and they have fixed some of the jank from the first one. I would like you to be able to assign skills, spells and whatnot to the d-pad shortcuts. It took me ages to work out how to just throw a stone.
And, yeah, he second area is much easier than the first. Odd they front loaded a harder boss. I almost managed to do the last one on my first go without getting hit (there’s a big flail in the middle that’s supposed to be a healing spell and I pressed the wrong triggers. That’s going to get annoying)

Launch trailer got me suitably excited. Can't wait. Not bothering with the demo as I know it will be epic like nioh 2.

Having beat the first demo, the first boss wasn't too bad for me when I clocked on to just go full on the offensive. Helps that they extended the parry window quite a bit. Second level I had more difficulty with one of the mid game bosses than the boar, did it on first attempt. If I had any advice I'd say hitting R1 + the parry button at the right time also acts as a parry while being an immediate weapon swap and an attack all in one. Keeps the attack strings flowing. You can also parry any environmental hazard like a falling log.

Yeah I like this a lot. Nothing gives me a gaming boner quite like learning a complex hyper responsive combat system.

It’s really good. It’s going to get super deep when you, I assume, start infusing special moves and whatnot onto weapons.
I really want to get this for the PS5 but ‘free’ is hard to pass up. Anyone playing it on a series s?

Sounds like it runs like Nioh on the old pro machines which was bearable.

Anyone playing it on a series s? It's fine, looks pretty soft at times, but overall runs well. Much better than on PC for sure.

If you're on PC, capping the frame rate with RTSS improves things significantly. You might get even better results at 59 or 58 because Musou games really need that when playing on Steam Deck, but I haven't tried it.
The other big thing is making sure it's running at the frame rate limit specified in the options because if you don't (e.g. setting it to 120 but running at around 100) it will frame skip to maintain speed several times a second which just looks unbelievably awful. This is an engine thing: it happens in the PS5 version of Nioh 2 as well if you try and run one of the heavier levels at 120fps.

It really could do with a slightly wider fov, hoping flawless wide-screen adds one for the pc version. Also the performance on series X isn't amazing and the fades to black are really jarring. Hoping there is a little bit more polish when it comes to launch.
That first boss is an absolute bastard compared to the 2 after him, I got them in 2 and 4 tries but he took me ages. The 3rd boss would benefit from a wider fov though as it all feels a bit too close when fighting him.
Combat is great though and as with nioh it's more fun doing the levels than fighting the bosses.

Fully agreed on the FOV, constantly having to adjust the camera up and down on the slightest inclines feels weird. The default camera speed's pretty slow and the auto lock-on is very inconsistent which doesn't help.
I quite enjoyed it on Series X but only the PC version lets me turn off the chromatic aberration, which is a shame.

Used flawless wide-screen on atomic heart and it makes such a huge difference so hopefully someone will add it to this. Only shame is my stuff won't carry over from completing the demo on Xbox if I play on pc.

It does if you're playing the MS Store version - I've transferred my save back and forth a few times so it's a proper 'play anywhere' title. I was going to buy it on Steam but with how it just completely chokes and then dies on the Deck I just decided to get a few months of Game Pass instead.

I've tried the MS Store demo. It's a little better than the Steam one, but it still stutters way more than it should. My GPU usage is somewhere around 100-110W (max limit is 135W), so the GPU is not really being pushed or anything.

Just to add to this, played through the latest demo on Series S this morning in performance mode. Seems decent enough, and I'm usually a stickler for that sort of thing. Certainly good enough to avoid spunking £55 if you don't have to.

Ta. I’ve been half thinking about trading up to an SX for a while so if it doesn’t run well, it’s still sixty quid towards the cost in my head.

Shit. Had a quick look at the demo earlier. That may have been a mistake. Suddenly remembered just why I love nioh so much.

The twin halberd type things were probably my favourite weapon that I found.

So I played up to the first boss and had a couple of wings at him before uninstalling it. Played enough of it to know I need it. As I suspected it just feel so lovely to play and is basically Nioh 3 in a different setting. Not sure why my brain wasn't working when I played the first demo as the spirit gauge clicked with me this time and I get it now, as well as the Nioh muscle memory kicking in.
Thought I wasn't in the mood for this type of game. Turns out I very much am. It's going on the birthday list for a couple of weeks time. It really is glorious.

I can’t figure out the annoying surprise second phase of that first boss at all. Can get through the first phase pretty much untouched, but I can’t time his ranged attacks for toffee and he keeps jumping away from me if I get in close.
Maybe I need to grind a bit to compensate for complete lack of skillz.

Yeah the couple of goes I had at the second phase were a bit scrappy. First time I got him down to a quarter but ran out of heals and he twatted me. Didn't see the point in going in for too many bouts as it's just a taster anyway. I have decided I very much like the whole spirit system with the parry's etc. I've never really been in to parrying but it seems to be very respnsive with quite forgiving windows so I think I'll manage okay with it. Less stats to upgrade as well, with only 5 now, which is nice.
Can't quite understand the morale levels yet, in what way it affects damage dealt / received etc.
