5km done in 28 mins 55 secs, much happier with that time. Just hot keep up with running regularly if I want to get back to sub 25 minute 5km runs.
Feeling much better for having made the effort!

I've got a treadmill and cross trainer which we have facing a TV on which we watch virtual runs around the world together. It's quite nice and not affected by weather or darkness and my asthma copes. That's a good idea, and if I'm honest my ideal scenario. I have a 3 year old and another on the way soon so wouldn't work for us right now. Besides, leaving the madness of the house behind is one the more appealing aspects of running.

Our kids are 12 & 14 so they use the kit a well. Eldest was going on about this cool run they did around New York at night ending in Time Square. It makes us feel less trapped and we get to see the world a bit.
Plus health stuff.

Right, got a goal now. Marathon trail run booked for July. Feeling better about this one than the last I didn't do. Gym and improving weather will make training much easier.

I PB’d my half training yesterday. Currently doing a weekly ten miler on top of four or five 5-10ks (work/family commitments allowing) and I finally properly broke the two hour barrier going 1hr 48

Doing the Brighton half at the end of the month. Training was going really well, was on course to do over 100 miles in January but then my calves just seem to have given up the ghost. Have only managed two runs in February so far - worried they'll snap if I try more.

That sucks monk. I'm still rehabbing a bad shin splint (had to get an MRI to rule out a stress fracture) and won't be doing any running whatsoever before April or maybe May.

Still planning to run it but I feel like I'll have lost half my hard-won fitness by race day.

I'm still doing the odd 5k & (touch wood) the morton's neuroma seems to be behaving itself & leaving me be.
Bought a pair of brooks running shoes, which i really like, never bought them before, but think i'm a convert.
Gone right off ascics & mizunos seem much tougher to source round my way for some reason. Independent ruuning shop went bust, & i'm not a big fan of the run4it mob.

Didn’t realise there was a running thread in here.
Done 1,000km since last July. Lost just over 3 stone. Got my first run event booked, Great Birmingham Run 1st May, and my training has gone to shit with pain in my knee.
Had an MCL fix op years ago and something has aggravated it, mild pain anything plus 5km. I wear a knee sleeve but I’ve just bought a decent patella strap online hoping that will help.
Also, retired my trusty fresh foams and upgraded to the new Brooks Ghosts.
Mad how impactful just 2 weeks is without any running. General mood is on the slide and 4lbs heavier as well.

Yeah I'm on a week into rest from suspected shin splints and I hate it. Have a nice new pair of Asics to break in too.

I'm just over two months into a rehab period for the same issue, and the swelling has only just gone. It's taking so long to heal cos I'm and idiot and kept running with it despite shooting pains down the side of my shin. Yeah, don't do that.

Just did my first run in about, oh, 15 years (since tearing my ACL, only got it fixed about 7 years after the fact after realising collapsing all the time with kids wasn’t a good idea).
Only managed 2km in about 11 minutes, lungs feel on fire. Quit smoking fully a couple of years ago but my lung capacity is knackered. Does that ever get better with running or have I knackered them via years of cigarette abuse?

It should get better. When I started running I still smoked occasionally but had been a pretty heavy smoker for 15-20 years before that. When I quit, the improvement in my breathing while running was obvious. I do wonder whether the years of smoking have limited my overall fitness, as I still struggle with marathons, but I guess most people do.

I did similar and tried to run through shin splints and ended up with stress fractures, which lead to months of no running.

Anyone got any experience in patella pain management when running?
Bought an ITB strap to sit below the knee which I’m trying tomorrow.

privatefloydJust read your earlier post. Well done on the weight loss and glad that running is working out for you. What I will say though is, regards the knee... Don't run. When I started running back in '14 / '15 I caned it. Got really excited and really motivated. Built up (what I thought was) gradually, and then about a year in, started to get some knee pain, possibly similar to what you have. I tried many things. Straps, rollers, chaning shoes etc etc etc. tried to dial it down and run through it easily and then one morning it felt like it exploded. Couldn't walk for a week, let along run. Put me out of action for 3 months. I went out after, built back up again, slower, more gradual, and it never happened again. From my own experience with running, is don't run through the pain. Rest. Just flat out rest. Then when the pain has subsided completely, head back out. Slowly. Dial back on the pace you've built up. Take your time. Even if you feel like you're undoing what you've done, you're not. Even if it means you cancel the run you've entered. Better that than you fuck your knee completely. There will be other events, and it's pointless if you're going to injure yourself in the process. That's my advice from my own experience. You may get on better, and some other advice might work out for you, but just wanted to share.

My own running has basically gone to shit now. Even my 3 mile pace is 40 seconds a mile slower than it was a year or so ago and the flab is building. not sure I can actually be fucked doing anything about it now. A few years ago it would have spurred me on to imprive my pace but I think these days I just enjoye going out for the odd slow(er) run and enjoying it. I was toying with trying to beat my 3hr 30mins time on the marathon later this year but I am not sure I have the will power to even get up to that distance, let alone put a decent time in.

Floyd, I have had years of itb shite.
If it's that, the itb band strap should help, it worked for me, but is only a sticking plaster.
Lots of stretching of all leg muscles, some hamstring building. A lot is apparently due to imbalance of quad/hams, since running is quad heavy.
Clamshell exercises also helped build support muscles too. I also vary sports more, cycling, running, gym & bit of rowing to not just batter running like i used to. Think the crosstraining really helps tbh

Vortex That's an excellent point about the other excercises. Definitely the key. I began to throw biking into the mix after my knee went to shit, and I think that definitely helped building up all the suppporting muscles, like you say.

Yeah cross training has definitely helped me in the past. Although that can also lead to other injuries so don't over do that!
I screwed my hip flexors while cross training on a stationary bike. Then when I just start to concentrate more on the running...BOOM SHIN SPLINTS!
It's annoying cause I knew that was a risk, felt the shins going and carried on running until even walking a little started to hurt.
I'm still walking though otherwise I'll turn into Jabba the hut.

Cheers guys, all very good advice.
I’ve got a decent Jamis bike which il start taking out more. Did a 35 mile jaunt on it the other day in the nice weather which was lovely.
Going to take the month slow and see where I end up.

I just don’t want to slide backwards on my weight, it’s a vicious circle, when the mental health slides as a result of no running, I then eat more 😂

I've just done the final run of a 10k training programme on my Garmin. I was aiming for 53mins but scraped in under 50 at 49:58. Pretty chuffed with myself actually, and I ended up with my fastest 5k, mile and 10k.
Not sure what to aim for now. I'll probably just do some speed work and get my 5k time down further, bang out some park runs.
The Garmin watch was the best purchase I've made for my fitness in a long time. I find I need something telling me what to do otherwise I just bimble about!

Just entered the loch ness marathon in Oct. I need a goal so it's as good as any.
Three years since I last ran it and I'm not in the same shape I was then.
Still. Five months. I can turn this around...

Definitely. I seem to (i hope) have got past the morton's neuroma issues i was having. Back up to 7k, so no marathons for me, but just happy to be running pain free!
Hopefully, get back to about 8-10km, then I'll be praying it doesn't return like last time I thought i was through it.
