Ran a 10k trail race today (actually 50/50 tarmac road and gravel path) and shaved a cool 48 seconds off my time from last year on the same course.
I think we can call that progress.

28:40 in the Great North 5K tonight Happy with that, I never break the 30 barrier when I run similar distances at home. And it was about a million degrees once you got moving and a sweat on. 29:13 tonight but it was a very crowded field. Felt good though, was running with colleagues and all clocked decent times.

We had a works running club for a few years until people started to leave (science is bad for fixed term contracts for a few years).
It was good fun & made me run after work on pishy wintry days far more than I would have on my own.
I miss it tbh. Running on your own is nice to clear the head, but social runs are also a nice change.

Did the Kielder 10k today as part of the marathon, half-marathon, duathlon weekend. Shaved a cool five minutes off last year’s time and conditions were perfect; sunny, cool, dry.
Its an absolutely beautiful route too along the shore of Kielder Reservoir and through part of the forest plantation. Plus the event village is an upmarket holiday park so its civilised, has good facilities and a lovely atmosphere.
Met Steve Cram as well as he’s a founder/organiser of the event so is all over the site.

Thanks!
My second fastest 10k (race or otherwise) on Strava too. Still just over an hour but I’m pretty chuffed with that considering I never aim or train for fast times and just go with however I feel on the day.

Best way. Go out and just enjoy it. Do as your body feels. Well done.

Did a 5 milers up a hill today.
More specifically a 2 mile run in, then 800ft up and down in a mile and the same 2 miles back.
It was a bit of a killer 58 minutes but its a really nice event in a beautiful location (forestry roads surrounded by big trees starting in a valley bottom and heading up one of the sides)

Went for a run for the first time in a year or two this lunchtime. Made it about 200m before I felt like I couldn't breathe. This may take a while...

I'd start with fast walking first and build up to it.

Went for a run for the first time in a year or two this lunchtime. Made it about 200m before I felt like I couldn't breathe. This may take a while... I might be there with you. Started an office job in February and I put on 6 kilos already. I havn’t been out on the bike much which hasn’t helped but I really need to have a mid week exercise. It’s actually more like 12 kilos from when I was out every week for a group ride. Setting up my bike/getting ready takes a good 15 minutes, including if I want to just hop on the turbo trainer so quite like the idea of sticking on my trainers and just heading out. Been rattling away in the back of my head for a little while so it feels like something I want to. Until I get out, but excercise is always like that.

I started by picking somewhere reasonably nearby and running, jogging and walking my way there over and over until I was fit enough to run the whole way. Then I’d pick somewhere slightly further away as an alternative route and work on that. Just slowly building up run/walk intervals in a very informal, whatever works kind of way.
I’m not fast but I just like chugging along by myself in the woods or over the fields around here.
The races I post about here are really just excuses to run in different locations rather than an attempt at anything competitive.

Getting back into running at the moment myself. Worked my way up to a weekly 10k on the treadmill, and just recently went for a 4k run outdoors, which left my legs completely stiff and sore. The treadmill really works the muscles in very different ways, it's really no substitute for getting outside.

Treadmills are definitely much lower impact. I did a little bit of Zwift treadmilling in my marathon training this year, which Zwift is very keen to have you doing at increased inclines to offset the easier time you generally get on a treadmill, but it still doesn't prepare your legs for concrete really.
Speaking of which, for the first time in 18 years of running I think I'm genuinely injured.
Discovered the joys of "run slower to run faster" Zone 2 training and have been averaging 50+ miles a week for most of the year, polishing off several events including 10k's, Half's and 20 Milers, finishing off with a marathon 4 weeks ago.
Did all that without so much as a blister. Took a well earned couple of weeks off.
Started on it again this week and my right knee has emphatically told me to fuck off.
Looks like "Runner's Knee" from all the symptoms, so I'm thinking at least a month, possibly two off now whilst that heals, balls!

Been rattling away in the back of my head for a little while so it feels like something I want to. Until I get out, but excercise is always like that. I'm a bit similar in that I used to cycle to work every day, but have been working from home for the past year or two, which hasn't been good for my health/weight. I try and go out for rides at weekends, but almost never actually make it for anything long enough to count as exercise. I do go out for 30 minute walks every lunchtime, but based on trying to run yesterday that hasn't really prepared me for running. I remember from when I used to run that the first few times are the worst, as your body just isn't used to it. But it's still a bit of a surprise how much tougher slowly jogging for 5 minutes is than walking briskly. I'm gonna do the 'walk/run to a location and back' thing and see if I can slowly work up to being able to run the whole way. How often is good for running? My legs aren't too bad today, but not great. I'm thinking 30mins twice a week, then walks on the other lunchtimes. But I'm wondering if I need to go out again today before my muscles forget what they've learned.
