Been on an interesting journey over the last year. Lost my brother to Bowel cancer a year ago and decided to run Virtual London Marathon to raise money. I had been dabbling a little but went from nothing to marathon in 6 months and was around 5 hours (officially 4:45 but London Official App was generous in tracking). However got the bug and enlisted friends from work and a group of us did the Manchester Marathon last weekend. Managed sub 4 hours (by 16 seconds but still sub 4) and had gas left in the tank. Interested to see where this takes me, next up first Ultra in June.

Awesome, under 4 hours is good work.
Sorry about your brother.

Bucket list tick off with London Marathon done.
Ran in 4:12, pleased with that for my first marathon.
Atmosphere is truly something else.

Ha! No this was a run I wanted to see what my normal capability would be. Maybe next time! Although I did see someone running in the same Dino outfit I wore before!

Ha. About six years ago I went to my first Parkrun and laughed at myself being overtaken by dads with buggies. Today, I was that dad. 😎

Doing a 10k race tomorrow. Last year I did the same one in 1:05:22 so really hoping to break the hour mark this time.
First 5k is very flat compacted gravelly type road then bang on the 5 marker its uphill all the way to the 8 sign on tarmac. More tarmac down to the 9 then the final km is half potentially muddy woodland footpath half the original gravel road.
Should be able to pace myself better knowing when the hill is coming and how long it’ll last.

1:09 on Strava, 1:07 chip time. Absolutely cooked in the heat but it felt like a good one. Got to see a deer get onto the road and run along ahead of us for a bit too.

Did the Manchester half today. Fucking nora it was hot. Absolutely ridiculous. Water stations were just giving out piss warm water.
2:17 and I'll take it for my first one.

Finally pulled my finger out and had an attempt at a run after working my way up to it with walks this year. Started off a bit too keen and the bastard hill right at the start pushed me to my max heart rate straight away, so had to rein it in a wee bit. I've got a long way to go but already itching to get out there again (preferably when it's a bit cooler!)
I feel fucking great after that!

Well done! I keep meaning to get out but it's too hot at the moment. Should make an effort and do it early morning.

Ran a 10k up and down a hill in Northumberland at the weekend. Legs felt like jelly on a couple of the later climbs but the steepest parts of the course were all on a big downhill into the finish so I took the breaks off to try and make up time there.
1hr 4min my third fastest 10k ever according to Strava although the chip times aren’t available yet.
Felt good. I don’t get to go hiking anymore so this kind of thing is my biggest excuse to get somewhere countryside-ish.

Did the Gateshead Trail 10k over the weekend. Finished in just over an hour but felt like it was a solid effort. Mostly flat mix of road and trail. Only downside was that it was just a big field of runners that it meant there were three or four bottlenecks wherever people up ahead slowed to walking. Very fun event overall though, the biggest I’ve ever attended.

Back on the running buzz again (I never fully lapse but drop down to 1 a week at times), only 5ks, got 4 in last week and realised that my runners are probably in need of replacement.
"But these are only new" I thought to myself before realising I bought them 3 years ago and they probably needed replacing a year ago. Not appreciating how truly old your footwear is is a real dad move to my mind so another old man milestone reached there I guess.
Anyway, any recommendations for a decent but not massively expensive pair? Most frequent distance is 5k, might do the odd 10 but that's the max.

Define your price range?

Post by mikew1985 on Aug 14, 2023 8:53:40 GMT
Ideally as low as possible. Topping out at just over 100 of my euros. So probably 80 - 90£ I would invest more if I was doing anything more than short distance but I just don't think it's needed.

Probably a pair of Asics with a cushion gel. Lightweight as possible and with an arch if you've got flat feet - if you're unsure, just see how long you can stand on one leg.
Depending on your age - ankle support to keep your leg straight. Just watch when you walk and if your feet or knees are pointing outwards, then get something that's really still around the ankle

I use Asics gel nimbus 23's. Good for support.

I had some Asic Gelventures that were great until I put a toe hole in one of them. Only about £60 on sportsshoes.com.
I’m currently using a New Balance trail shoe that should’ve been loads more (double?) but was about £80/90 in a sale on that site. Very comfortable but I can already see the same toe hole starting to thin the upper after only having them about a year.

As a flipside, I paid about £40 for my first pair from Decathlon and they've lasted fucking ages. So it's swings and roundabouts.
I generally wear stuff til it falls apart though.
My latest pair cost me about £130.

Anyway, any recommendations for a decent but not massively expensive pair? Most frequent distance is 5k, might do the odd 10 but that's the max. Step one is to go to a running shop and have your gait analysed. That will then clear up what kind of shoe you need to be going for. If you're wanting to get back into it, the first thing is to make sure your shoes are right for your feet to avoid any injuries, particularly if you're starting to pick up the frequency / distance after a break.
I would say £90 - £130 for a decent pair is a good shout. I've used Brooks Adrenalines for years but as I get them from the Brooks website and go for the previous years shoe, I don't normally pay more than £90 odd as opposed to the current years £130.
Also, with running shoes, it's not the age, it's the mileage. Mine need replaced every 6 - 8 months despite looking quite new up top.
When you do get new shoes, sync them with something like Strava. It's handy to keep track of the distance on your shoes and give you a warning when you should be looking for a new pair. Depending on the shoe this can be anything from 250 - 350 miles (although I got nearly 500 out my last pair - but I definitely felt that they were due to be replaced by then).

I manage to get around 1000 km out of my shoes, though some start to fall apart before that. Can generally feel when they start to lose support. Probably should retire them before this as I love bouncing along in a new pair of running shoes.
Agree re. gait analysis, I've had it done a couple of times over the past ten years. Still buy the same models based on that, though sometimes save a bit of cash by getting last year's version. They generally don't change too much year on year.
I alternate between Asics Gel Kayanos and Mizone Wave Inspires. Read somewhere that alternating shoes between runs can help avoid injuries but that's probably a load of bollocks as it seems like I'm constantly nursing some running related aches and pains nowadays.

Sorry. I should have been clearer, I've definitely done over 500 miles in 3 years. As I said a bad week is 1 run so I always do at least 5k per week but on the whole would be way above that. Hence the runners have probably seen 1200kms, I just hadn't thought about it at all :/ A lot more when I think about 2020 when football was not possible so there were 3 - 5 runs per week. On the Gait analysis I actually never did that, but noticed very recently they have one in my local sports shop so must do that one of these days.

I think they were probably still fine after 1000kms but I noticed the last couple of runs I was really feeling my feet and the impact particularly around the toe and then I looked at the sole of the shoe to see I'd completely worn through that area. I honestly don't know how I hadn't noticed it before.

Is there a FG Strava group I can join? I miss the old Nike challenges from the old place, I’d probably never have started running without it.

Don't think so. There used to be an EG one for cycling a few years back but I've never seen a running one. Start one? I'll join if you do.
Edit: oh, there's still the cycling one, under FG now. Never even noticed!

There is now a Strava Font Geek Running Club, imaginatively called Font Geek Running Club. Can't work out how to do a link but it's an open club. Come one, come all. Club pic is the winning picture from Life Is Strange.
