Soma one of the best horror games for me of recent times and it's all down to sound design. Walking along the ocean floor I swear I heard a whale and thought it was coming right for me. Looking around all over the place I got a feeling of being extremely small and left feeling like I truly did not belong here, something no game has done before or since. Signalis is also fantastic wearing its references on its sleeve but also making it into its own fascinating setting.

So I’m ready to put a bullet in it and trade it in. On my list of design fuckups earlier I forgot about “terrible checkpoint save system”.
There’s a tediously impossible fight on a skiff that highlights the fact that the GRP doesn’t work. I just spent ages fucking around with the item boxes, selling useless ammo, having to make numerous trips to make space for GRP batteries. They don’t work, fight is impossible. You can’t save it after all your fucking around, so it’s a total nexus point of the game’s design failures versus how intriguing the story is or whatever is good about it. Hint: the story is woefully basic cliche badly told.

That was where Duff got stuck too. I did it with the riot shotty and melee. The GRP can make light work of enemies if you have environmental traps but it's always optional.

Really the only reason I used the GRP was to pull enemies close so I could bash their skulls in.

I really enjoyed the game up until the platform section which as you say highlights the games issues. I found GRP was the only way to deal with the enemies and firing them off the edge. If you haven't upgraded your GRP I imagine this section would be a nightmare.

As far as I can tell there are at least 3 waves of at least 4 upgraded assholes who will swarm you. I’m finding (after I fuck around with the loot boxes and inventory cunt system) for ten fucking minutes because there’s no genuine save feature, I can get to wave three. If my cat wasn’t asleep on my lap I’d be at the shops trading it in right now. I don’t mind a challenge, but have zero tolerance for wasting my time with tedious, unnecessary interface choices. Not when the rest of the game is this mediocre. If you are going to rip off Dead Space, do it properly.

I'm not going to lie, the one part I didn't love was that fight. It took me a good 3 or 4 tries before I did it. The GRP is vital (well, it was for me). If it helps, there are four waves and they come from each side in turn, the last one being the wave that appears at the front of the skiff. Therefore you only have to face one side at a time and the key is grabbing them as soon as you can and launching them off into the fan at the back, then off each side, then into the fan at the front. So you don't nee dto be constantly looking around or anything. That's the only weak encounter of the whole game imo.

Also, in terms of Dead Space. I was fucking about in all three last night. Each one has more shitty design decisions than this, and that's for damn sure. A lot of people seem to be putting these games on a pedal stool (me too tbh, I love them to bits) but flawless, they are not - by a large margin. They are fucking brilliant, but the combat is just as one note, you get swarmed by multiple enemies from multiple angles constantly and Isaac moves like a tank.

A 'pedal stool'? Is this the new 'damp squid'? I'll be endlessly quoting from the same 3 sitcoms until I'm in my 80's

See I never fell in love with Blackadder as much. I don't even know if I've watched them all. Saying that, I can still vividly remember the ending of Blackadder Goes Forth and how affecting it was.

For context, I thought Dead Space 2 mostly sucked, and didn’t bother going very far into Dead Space 3, after getting it on clearance. Only the first game is a thing as far as I’m concerned. if they do the first game justice with the remake then go in a completely new direction to the original sequels with any follow-ups, I’m likely to enjoy it.

To be fair I think Dead Space 2 is the weakest of the three but it's still pretty great.
Dead Space 3 is actually fucking superb and I don't care what anyone says (nothing new there). Particularly the first half of the game when you're exploring the debris field around Tau Volantis. Just floating through space between wrecks of ships in a near silent vacuum. It's immense.l

In all fairness Dead Space 2 and 3 are a bit pants - they've not aged well.
In my estimation even the original Dead Space is only a very good game, not an all time classic - I've never gone back to it the same way I have with RE1, RE4 or Silent Hill 2.

Dead Space 3 is better than 2? I actually thought you were alright. It's mainly due to the aforementioned first half tbh. I like Dead Space 2 a lot but it's very in your face the whole time. 3 has you drifting through and exploring all these wrecks above the planet and, well, it's cool man. It's cool.
