Actually RE7 in VR was absolutely horrific. Yeah, this. I really struggled to get through it in vr. It was a constant battle accepting the relentless dread

Ghosts man. Ghosts in games just do it for me. The sound design has to be top notch as well. One of the reasons that (going back to) Thief was so damn effective. Graphically it looked like a porno made for mechanoids but the artistic direction with the darkness and the astounding audio just worked so well. Yup, fatal frame / project zero have me unloading my anus regularly

I'm really in the mood for a scary game now - really wish Signalis had a New Game+ mode.
Does Condemned hold up? It's one of the few I've never played and it's on the backwards compatibility list.

rhaegyr Not sure about "holds up" as not played in over a decade, but I really enjoyed both Condemned games when they released, I suppose you have nothing to lose ?

Mmmm sort of. It's showing it's age now but it's still good. The FEAR games are also on the backwards compatible list. I kind of wish Condemned 2 was even though only the first few levels are any good.
I'm going to resume my Dead Space 3 playthrough tonight...

It's worth playing even if it doesn't look as good now. If only for the mannikin level. Creepy as fuck.
I'm tempted to fire it up too actually, it's been years.

Actually yeah, I might fire Condemned up. Although as I've recently played Village, I'll get a bit confused controlling another Ethan.

I found Alien Isolation more tense than actually scary. Tense though. Oh god was it tense. More tense than a festival campsite.
I actually reinstalled it the other day. Do you know what, it STILL looks fucking amazing.
Didn't Alien Isolation have a similar reaction to Callisto Protocol with reviews being everywhere. I'm sure IGN gave it a really low score. The fucking philistines.

Did RE7 have a mannequin that was in a different place ever time you went back to a certain room? One of the BioShocks also had some creepy mannequin action IIRC.
They're definitely very unsettling under certain circumstances.

Eternal darkness on the gamecube has a cool bust of a statue that's completely normal for a while, and then all of a sudden, it's head moves to track your movement. Fucking thing. Yeah, one of the bosses in Bioshock had a mannikin thing going on I think. One of the early ones? Can't remember fully.

Everywhere between 6s and 9s in the mainstream games media, then it underperformed sales expectations too. I remember loads of user reviews about how boring it was too. Although that was in an era when any game not doing COD numbers was considered a flop by publishers who wanted all or nothing (see fucking up Dead Space 3). My only complaint about Isolation is that it probably went on too long despite the core game being basically a perfect execution of what they intended it to be.

Village and its dlc will shit you up too if mannequins are you thing

The main issue was the length apparently. Yeah granted it was long, but it's interesting to see how that game is viewed now especially in a climate where game length is synonymous with VFM.

EG gave Dead Space a 7, they soon retconned that in a look back feature.

I’m similar to someone else who I think commented it’s more about tension than scares. Probably only Alien Isolation had me genuinely scared, I was paralysed under a desk for a good ten minutes the first time the Alien properly appears and just shat myself through the whole game first time. The first part of Doom 3 I recall being very scary too, until it suddenly isn’t. Minecraft made me scream regularly before they nerfed the difficulty back to kindergarten.
I think Dead Space was very tense first time through. On later playthroughs I knew how to deal with everything and just enjoyed feeling on top of it. Same with RE4.
Callisto Protocol hasn’t been tense for me at all. I don’t hate the game, I expect to finish it if I can solve the puzzle of the fight I’m stuck on. But it’s got very little heart or thought to it. The writing is weak, the level design is incredibly basic, there’s zero environmental storytelling. There’s no puzzles, no exploration of or expansion to the GRP powers. All the other “quality of life” interface and balancing problems will probably be fixed in patches, but the fundamental game won’t change, and we’ll be left with a slick demo for Unreal engine with zero depth to it. When the bugs-or-interface issues aren’t getting in the way, it’s dead easy. When they are, it’s bullshit. Bullshit in games isn’t scary, it’s just bullshit. CP is a fuckton better than The Evil Within, which was wall-to-wall interface and design bullshit from start to finish, but it’s much less interesting.

I really struggled with The Evil Within, actually abandoning for a few years around chapter 8 maybe, anyway Loved the second game and played to completion upon release...fast forward to last year and there was a Xbox Monthly quest (gamepass) on TEW and so I played it, got the quest done and decided I had enjoyed returning so continued until I beat. I still think the second game is superior but so glad I did return to the first.

The Evil Within 2 redeemed the first game for sure, but I was also glad I had slogged through that first piece of shit because the story underpinnings were actually really strong, and important to the second game. There’ll never be a third, sadly.

Can't win.

Yup. Trichlorophenylmethyliodosalicyl is being slagged off for being too short. It's ridiculous. There's more than enough in the bottle.

Depends if a game does enough to support its length- it can sour the experience if you get sick of it. I just did The Library mission in Halo CE and it went on for-fucking-ever

I love Alien Isolation and would easily call it a 9/10 game for me and one I still think about regularly. But I do think it has at least one, possibly two, natural points of conclusion before its eventual end. The big one being after you jettison the first alien into space. Although it turns out that’s actually only a half to two thirds of the way in.
