I think I'm being offered a job in Bahrain. It's all moved so quickly in the space of 4 hours.

There isn't really much to it than that, I'd be very wary on any paid courses on the subject The thing is, companies look at if you have certificate when looking at CVs Do they? We’ve been doing some training for Certified Scrum Developer at work and it’s mostly bollocks. These things exist purely to make money for the training companies, they have no inherent value. I certainly wouldn’t base any recruitment decisions around whether people have them or not.

I think I'm being offered a job in Bahrain. It's all moved so quickly in the space of 4 hours. Like full time? I'm not sure what the visa requirements for residency are like, but it's nice to visit... Small, though. Live there? It'll be... quiet. And you'll probably need a VPN. You can drink there, though.

Jambowayoh Interesting. It's about an hour by car from Dammam, but living in KSA and commuting 2 hours by car across to Manama doesn't sound like fun. Might want to look into that. Other than that, Bahrain is an island archipelago so not sure where else it's commutable from. Qatar by RIB, I suppose. That said, if they were paying plenty and covering expenses, it might be a good way to save up for a few years.

I verbally accepted a new job on Friday. It'll be a great place to work, but it feels a little like a sideways move. Back to work in a university. Absolutely sailed through the interview and reasoned with them that I should be at the top of the pay band, plus they've reassured me there will be a recruitment round in January that we can craft an application together for me to be a shoo-in for promotion.
That said, having seen some friends/ex-colleagues move into new jobs recently who are earning fuck you money, the envy is creeping within me. I'm normally very content with my lot having always worked public sector for comparatively poor pay. But I think the bonkers costs of living and added fertility treatment costs have made me think I deserve fuck you money.
Sooo... I landed an interview with Big Pharma yesterday which I'm going to pursue in the meantime. And I might chuck in a few more before I serve out my notice here.
Haven't actually handed in my notice yet... that is going to be painful. I expect my boss will be distraught as I'm basically the only competent dev left. Whichhhh is why I'm leaving anyway.
Such a huge mix of emotions at the moment. Relief at leaving my current place, which is making me completely miserable, folded in with second-guessing that I should be aiming higher, all sprinkled with the anxieties in life that come with turning 40 soon. Yeesh, no wonder people buy fast cars.

Salary is pretty good, and they're offering all the usual housing and transportation allowance. The recruiter mentioned because I'd be on a business visa I wouldn't be able to get a bank account so essentially I'd be transferring cash at like a Western Union. Not ideal I guess but I guess it is what it is. We'll see for now unless I win the Euromillions tonight.

So I think that Dammam is considered to be one of the better expat cities to live in Saudi, but it's still in Saudi. If you can stick it for a bit, it'll be a good chance to see that part of the world and maybe save up some dollar.
Obviously, nearly 10 years since I was there and I was in conservative, xenophobic Riyadh and still had a pretty decent time. I think the worst was being a bit bored sometimes. Take some kind of gaming device (or buy one out there).

Actually I read it incorrectly, due to the business visa I'd be initially coming through Bahrain in the first instance but I'd be living and working in Dammam. I've always said I'd only be going to Saudi for some fuck you money as user Tomo said earlier. And yeah I'd be taking my Xbox and ps5 without a doubt.

Things may have changed since I was out there, but I paid no UK income tax on my Saudi salary. I still received and paid tax on the UK portion of my salary. I think the free money loopholes were mostly already closing then anyway, but I'm pretty sure you can still go out there and make a good living for a few years, live pretty cheaply but decently and see lots of sun. It's mid 40s there this week, so if you like sun, Saudi is a cracking place. Get an apartment in an expat complex with an entertainment area and you'll have a pool, restaurant, gym and such. Maybe even an unofficial bar if you're lucky (Saudi is still officially dry, afaik). Get to eat loads of US chain food mostly prepared pretty well, but not masses of variety. And going out into the desert is an experience. Plus, Dammam's on the coast too, so there'll be some relief from the heat, but it'll be humid. If it was me*, and I was in my mid 30s and single, I'd go back. *probably not the greatest recommendation for anything

Well the recruiter has told me it's all tax free. I don't know how that's going to work regularly putting it into my English account. I haven't confirmed or said a final yes to anything. I'll have to mull it over.

Not so much a tough day thing, but some of the younglings at work are waiting on exam results and one of the older people has put a "Good luck" message in the group chat, but worded it in such a way that it seems like she's implying that they are destined to fail and end up working here forever.
Not in a deliberate or malicious way, just poorly worded without realising it. Imagine being tense as hell about your results already then waking up and the first thing you read leaving you with that kind of pessimistic outlook.

Hopefully they'll see in the end that there were good intentions. I can see how I would be full of anxiety and reading into things.

In another news, had an interview for Bali today got on well but the student profile isn't something I'm keen on. The Saudi job seems a given strangely with barely any input from me and I was set on that until I just received an email 5 minutes ago for an interview in Brum for low key a really good job. I'm a bit taken aback now of what to do.
