When our research institute merged with a university we lost our subsidised canteen on moving to a new build here about 8 years ago to save the university paying some extra tax for it and because 'there was a canteen in the building next door'. Guess what has shut this year due to the funding crisis in universities leading to a load of staff getting binned?
So now there is one canteen nearby, which is expensive and rammed with students and members of the public along with all the staff. Unless we take a hike to the hospital canteen.
Glad I usually take in a sandwich these days!
I still pine for our old canteen which used to be pretty good and was cheap. When I was young and had just bought my first flat and was struggling for disposable cash, that was probably my main meal every day as it was about as cheap as eating at home!

My central gvt dept still has decent cooked breakfasts. Two sausages, two bacon, black pudding, beans, and has browns, please. We dont have freshly squeezed orange juice any more though , but on big event days we get free breakfasts Last place I worked, an IFI in the US, the canteen was immense. Sushi counter with 3 chefs, a grill for on demand steaks, burgers, chicken, fish. Pizza bar. Fresh pasta section. Posh subway like on demand sandwich deli. Asian noodly soupy ramen standard options. Etc. I miss it.

My office was set up just over ten years ago after the Lisbon Treaty, the first chief was British and she seemed a lot more interested in micro-managing the set-up of the new HQ than, you know, doing actual policy. She apparently had a hand in the design of the canteen which is really really stupidly laid out. The one great thing about it though is the pizza station, the pizzaiolo is a fucking genius, whips out freshly made pizzas to order and they're always perfect, and what I particularly love about him is the way he'll always bung on some extras for you. I'm always in there at 5 to 12 to beat the queue. ;p edit - come to think of it we do also have the pasta bar, the wok station, and the grill for steaks done to order, so I don't know why I'm moaning

I finish tomorrow. Over 5 years here and been working in software development since 1995. That’s it now. In the process of following my filmmaking dream. The stars have aligned a d opportunities are presenting themselves so may as well make a go of it.
I had neither the time or the energy when I was working. Now got lots of plans and taking action.
Anyway, I doubt they’ll keep me at work all day so it’s off to get a haircut then down the pub for a pint or two of Erdinger.

Nice one, beast! Good luck with the new adventure!
No reviewing your own films though. I demand Paul Ross is given review copies of your work.

Just had an informal chat to the hiring manager about a low level IT job for the NHS. Wasn't expecting much but it actually went very well. Will see.

Haha, it's not a pm job trust me! It's just level 1 support. Much better shifts. Bit more cash too.

Well, they've passed me for stage 1, so that's promising. I've been accepted in principle so will see what the next email update entails. Remember I was offered that music job but it came with caveats so will take my time and see if it's acceptable for me.

The grifter at work has decided to join the morning teams call each day now when he is out for his morning walk/run, so nice to hear all the distortion and traffic via my headset

All 4 USB ports (3xA 1xC) have stopped working.
I think the likelihood of four physical ports failing, one of which is on the other side of the laptop, is slim.
I’ve done some searching and it seems like boxes need checking under USB stuff in device management.
I ring IT and try to suggest this when they fail to. I am instead spoken over, to tell me he needs to speak to someone as ‘it shouldn’t be doing that’ (no shit Sherlock) and that I’ll get a call back ‘at some point’ probably with a view to a new laptop.
FML. I bet any money this could be sorted remotely in five minutes.
Of course Device Management is locked down - they are so paranoid my right mouse button is locked down too.

Fiance having a hard time of it. She was let go from her old place because she was quite literally replaced by AI. She enjoyed that job as it gave her some structure while having the freedom to dictate how and when she fulfills what she needs to each day. She found a job elsewhere that does something similar, working from home but the hours were shit and they were much more strict compared to the last job, clocking hours and even tracking mouse usage.
She eventually quit within a month and now found a job teaching nursery school, which was what she always wanted to do as she did it previously. But in that time since she's realised that there's a lot preparation involved, she has to be the one to create lesson plans that feeds into her time out of work. Different from the last place which had lesson plans in place and she just had to be the best teacher she could with what was given and not have to worry about it once she left for the day. It's to the point now where the thought now of having to go into work is giving her anxiety and this is only a few weeks in. Feeling like she has a bit of imposter syndrome and guilt at wanting to quit it too, not knowing what she can or wants to do after. I know what it's like, 4 years at uni and I quit my job after 3 months because the stress of it was too much and felt like it was all out of my knowledge, the dread of going into work was giving me actual chest pains. In time I learned that it was just a job and found another that better suited me. I tell her the same but think it's just the back to back nature of two different jobs where she's struggling is what is making her feel down.

That's tough, sorry man. Sounds as if it's something that might improve with time and experience? Imposter syndrome is pretty universal, of course, unless you're a Tory minister.

Teaching has always been a thankless task, but the amount of pointless admin now is ridiculous. No freedom to teach how you want, yo be creative and see where a lesson takes you. Everything by rote and it's putting kids off. My son is forever worrying he hasn't put XZY in a para or something. Horrendously long hours for shit pay. I hope some of that eases in time but I doubt it.

My son's Year 1 teacher is an American lady, last night he told me he doesn't have to go to school today "because it's American Football Birthday" (it being 4 July I guess). He has such a crush on his teacher, he wrote her a card for the end of year, it's covered in love hearts and says "you are the best, I love you Mrs K, I care for you, I will miss you, you know lots of maths, you are the best teacher Mrs K" - he's got it bad
edit that should probably have gone in the parenting thread but we were talking about teachers

Bless. My youngest was like that with her yr2 or 3 teacher, who was basically fresh out of uni. Alarming that she was closer to my daughter's age than mine. Sucks getting old.

Forced myself to go into work when I could have taken a sick day for this fucking earache and swollen glands that make it painful to even swallow a mouthful of water, worked my arse off all morning and instead of any scrap of gratitude, I find myself in the latest battle in the war of words I've been having with a mad woman for nearly 7 weeks now.
Told her in no uncertain terms that I, and a whole host of other people, are all quite sick of her quirks of personality making our jobs more difficult than they have any need to be, that we are sick of her condescension and infantilising tone, that half the things she says are complete nonsense to start with, and that her need to micro-manage people would be more acceptable if her way of doing things didn't result in tasks taking three times as long.
Pretty sure she's going to complain to management, but they are as sick of her as the rest of us, so good luck to her trying to make "Criticising people for doing their jobs as quickly and efficiently as possible while doing their best to put up with a Rose West lookalike talking utter and relentless bollocks at them" a complaint that could possibly stick.
