It is the last day of The Sale. Our air-con is apparently set on "Solar flare". Car parking spaces are more valuable than gold as people fight to get through the door, despite having had the whole previous month to come and trash the place. 45 minutes from now, we will have people trying to slide like Jurgen fucking Klinnsman to get in under the descending roller shutters. Then our collective weeping can begin.

I'm half way through a 12 hour night shift at a neighbouring store for part of their refit, and the plans have all gone to fuck because the electrician hasn't bothered to turn up.

Once again the grifter on my department has made such a shit mess of the important yearly work for the summer. Its was really funny at end of last year where he didn't get the Manager role for the job it has been doing for about 2 years as does not deserve higher role. If there is expo, he will be going to.
Thankfully I'm not involved for the summer work, just get to see the disaster of the ongoing fuck up

My last week at work. After 6 years It's ended on a wet fart of a year. Endless lip service to what recommendations I made and requests I asked for but never followed through because something else took management's attention, endlessly being told how appreciated I am but never actually shown real word appreciation by listening to me only those who shout the loudest and complain the most and a DOS (director of studies) not entirely sure they want to be a DOS by forever saying "I don't want to get involved" in matters that involve them.
And to top of it off WhatsApping me a week before I go to ask, for the first time, when I'm leaving the country as they assumed I'd be leaving my apartment 2 days after my last working day as they've only suddenly realised they want a new teacher to live there next Monday. Very much appreciated.

I had a job offer for Jakarta and I withdrew my interest yesterday. I'm pretty burnout and honestly don't have the mental or physical energy to uproot myself again and attempt to settle in another foreign country, so I'm going back to England for a while see what I can do there. Already applied for work. Maybe I'll take my friend up on the offer of working for the AI company they work at.

I think I’ve mentioned dealing with person before but for the second time this term I’ve been named on a suicide threat from a student which the serious welfare team consider urgent and credible.
Named as in, blamed.
Welfare are taking care of it now but there’s nothing quite like seeing that email drop into your inbox to make your stomach implode.

Jesus, that's awful simple. Do you get support yourself for stuff like this?

Thanks guys.
Its a real mix of big feelings to get something like this, guilt, helplessness and a certain degree of defensiveness too (which isn’t super noble but I’m only human).
In theory HR offer something but they’re not mega-reactive and I’ve got a good line manager who I can have a chat with. Chances are I’ll just play a load of Prodeus tonight and go stare at the books in Waterstones if I have a spare half hour tomorrow lunchtime.

Got CC’d into the feedback from the crisis team intervention on that student. They’ve determined that he’s not at any immediate risk.
He also sent me a message outraged that I’d reported him to welfare and that this was something I should never have done because he’s not crazy and I’m causing trouble for him (his words).
Maybe don’t tell me that you’re going to take your own life in response to an email you didn’t like from one of the faculty administers then.
Fuck what a stressful couple of days.
I don’t know if he was bluffing or if it was just a moment of panic but I’ve had friends who’ve actually done it so seeing him write it out with the finality that he did was certainly a moment of panic for me.
I had tomorrow off anywhere but I think I might it for a long walk to forget everything in my inbox rather than catching up with housework.

Without wanting to sound overly cynical or like we don’t take it seriously, we get students threatening it all the time. The skill comes in being alert to the ones that are imminent danger or crisis cases and this one really seemed to fall into that category.
I get that students and young people in general have it tougher than when I was an undergrad and our biggest concerns were our hangovers but I really don’t know how the support team manage to cope with emotional burden of so many of their cases having some variation of “I’ll do it if I don’t get what I think I need”.
Although it is thankfully quite rare for them to blame individuals rather than teams or departments.

Never doubt for a second that you did the right thing referring it immediately to safeguarding.

Thanks
I know I did the right thing, and it did look legit to the point where the crisis response included calling him and sending the Police to his address - which is as immediate a threat to wellbeing as we have. We’d even had to brief the university’s press office so that they were prepared for the news.
Its a heck of a one-two to first receive a message that says because of what simple and his colleague have done I have nothing left, I’m forwarding all of our correspondence to my family and then I’ll do it. The consequences for my family are the fault of the university.
And then he gets mad at me for embarrassing him by intervening when it turns out he wasn’t at risk.
Its pretty exhausting.
Plus, y’know, the thing I was talking to him about was to let him return to one of our courses and the faculty registrar had agreed to let him back on. He just had to wait until the next time the modules ran in September and January.

The gall of this person even trying to pull that shit to get what they want is what gets me. They know full well what they're doing and how it's going to impact on people.
There's so many attempts to play the system in higher education these days, it's nuts.
Too many of them are happy to resort to this nowadays, when things are not going so well for them.
I have encountered (and heard reports of) this kind of stuff more often in recent years, but thankfully never to this level as yet.

Given the students behaviour I'd question if he should be allowed to rejoin the course.
Not sure what services are available but his tutor needs to have a word about responsible behaviour.

I remember when you said you were starting there and it does indeed feel like recent times. Certainly post covid, which I think happened in the mid 80s when I wore an onion in my belt...

What with all the things that we've gone through over the last 3/4 years, combined with the fact I now work weekends as well as weekdays, I no longer understand time.

It's an incredibly first world problem as I've worked in places that don't even have a canteen, but following the planned changes our canteen no longer provides toast at breakfast.
Upshot of this is that I'll no longer be using the canteen in the morning, as having eggs on toast was a simple pleasure.
At least I'll be saving some money and avoiding some calories (lol not really, went to the costa next door for a croissant instead)

My stand-out memory of working in the UK Foreign Office was the cooked breakfast in their shabby little canteen. Worth coming into work early for that.
The single worst change in the European Commission since I started thirty years ago is the way they've changed the spaghetti pesto in the canteen. It used to be the budget option at lunch was a big dollop of freshly made pesto ladled onto your pasta for about a euro. Now there's a pasta chef who takes ten minutes to do it all wanky with trace elements of basil and charges nearly ten euros.

Rarely use our canteen when in the office but when I do, there's decent variety and it's usually not bad. The breakfasts are nice too. Moving buildings next month where there is no canteen - just a coffee shop with "some" hot food which I think will be paninis etc. Disappointing.
