Had two interviews this week, first one on Monday at a nice early time of 6am was actually pretty good and felt like I was talking to a real person. 2nd one for Korea today at the glorious time of 5am, was completely the opposite with a very impersonal vibe, they got a bit weird with me when I had to answer if I ever had therapy in my life which I did and explained it was for cancer and that really set them off saying I hadn't put it on my application which specifically asked for the last 5 years which I politely rebutted to them. So yeah I don't think I'll be doing anything with them, not really bothered tbh especially as I know Korea can be super weird about things like taking care of your mental health which explains why they have the suicide rate they do.

Yeah that was probably the end of that one Jambo, best of luck with the other one too.
Interested to see where your travels take you next.

My career seems to be going mental again.
I'm kinda OK with the self storage work itself, but the work life balance is an absolute nightmare.
You know how you live at home and then go to work for the week and come back home each night and have the weekend off yeah?
Well, this job is more you're always at work, no matter what day it is, and you're occasionally allowed to spend 1 day here and there at home, so your default place of 'home' changes, and I really don't like that and can't do it ongoing.
However, in a bizarre set of events, back in January I cold emailed a music academy asking if they had any jobs. Heard fuck all as usual until yesterday. They sent me an email asking if I wanted to see them to see if I could do a music tutor job. I explained my level of proficiency (I.e., very low) but they still want to see me and see if they can train me up to do it.
I'm about to go and see them in an hour.
And just had another phone call about a job I applied for as a property administrator and they want a teams call tomorrow morning.
It's my random 1 day off today so the music interview is fine and tomorrow I'm on a shitty 11am-8pm shift so I can do a morning interview for the property job.
Let's see what happens next then.

Frog Yeah I don't think so too but I started the interview not wanting the position after reading some things about the set up and organisation after my first interview. It was just so passive and felt like I was talking to no one.

quadfather That all sounds VERY promising man. It's looking up again! You could totally be a music tutor! Fuck the property admin... Music tutor all the way.

Yeah I'd definitely prefer the music job. Will know in about an hour what the score is. I'm definitely going to sell myself as I've done music all my life but equally I'm fully prepared for them to say I'm no where near good enough, but again, I'll say I'll do whatever it takes.
The property one is second place, agreed, but at the moment anything is better than the shifts I'm on.
The property one is also pretty local, decent shifts and 2 days working from home as well, so I'd definitely take that over the self storage shifts

I don't know yet. They're going to send out the information on Friday. I've got to work out how to make the switch from old job to new, as I've got to learn all the beginner songs and sit in on some lessons before I can start taking on lessons myself. So I need to review it all my side.
They're ready for me pretty much immediately.
It is an absolutely mad/brilliant place. Rooms all over the place with mad vintage instruments. Casual dress, choose your hours, musical environment and they're also interested in the fact I can play bass and drums so potentially could do that as well as piano.
Just need to sort out cash logistics my side.
They also teach you up to grade 8. That's fucking brilliant. I could be a fully fledged pianist.
And one guy who works there looked like a wizard.

Awesome. It’s not the one next to Victoria is it?
Out of interest, can you read? My band has a mixture of self-taught bedroom heroes (me and the drummer, varying levels of musical illiteracy but good self taught feel/ears), elite readers (the bassist who is actually a jazz teacher and the horns who are all brass banders) and somewhere in between (keys).
I’ve always felt really inadequate knowledge wise against the readers and it sometimes does give me imposter syndrome, despite knowing a bit about scales, building chords, triads etc.
I’ve managed to teach people to blag it on lead guitar but mainly from a patterns/basic scale/learning stock licks approach. Don’t think I could go further than that.

Don’t think I could go further than that. No, it's not in Manchester Yes I can read, but I'm slow. I can't fluently read from scratch. It's like being in a French lesson for me where I have to process each symbol first, then learn left hand separate, then right, then both together slow and then speed up with practice to the right amount. I think I'm only slow because I stopped my lessons in my teens. But if I get back into it and do it every day, then I'm sure I'll level up in time

Guaranteed hours, or casual work? That's the risk with these sorts of, errm, gigs.

Guaranteed hours, or casual work? That's the risk with these sorts of, errm, gigs. Yeah, I asked the same. I saw their 3 month schedule and it's full and has people on waiting lists. One person is leaving soon, hence they invited me in. And another person is retiring later so I don't think bookings will be a problem but yeah it's something you have to bear in mind. One thing that surprised me more than anything is that she picked out my project manager experience and really liked that. I couldn't work it out at first until she explained how she personally teaches the pupils - it's just like project management, but more creative, so that was something I wasn't expecting, but a decent bonus

Well the best musicians IME are bassists and pianists so you’ll become some sort of musical overlord when you get that grade 8!
I never learned to read in the first place and feel like my brain is too old for that learning now.

I never learned to read in the first place and feel like my brain is too old for that learning now. Haha. Well, I reckon it's worth doing for a while to get the proficiency. I could always do lessons myself from home if it took off etc. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I don't think you'd struggle. You only need a few pointers to have to hand. All I do is use the adage "every good boy deserves favour" for learning the treble clef, and "good boys deserve favour always" for the bass clefs. Each first letter indicates the note on the ledger lines on the music, from bottom to top. So a note on the lowest treble clef is E. Then just work up from there. And the notes in the spaces (not on the line) are the other notes in the scale That's all I've ever used and if I can do it, anyone can! And scales I find easier on piano than bass, and I play the bass daily
