Goat herding on a remote mountaintop is my dream. The user facing side of my job is always the worst.

There are always stories about places offering 'the best job in the world' to go and sit on a deserted island somewhere.
Tory Party Leader is also a job that seems pretty lonely.

Can't you be a roadie or some such - get to travel a bit, dick about with instruments, and can do stealth gigs when setting up.

Its getting regular work. There's a job in a unit here at the Self Storage company where you just build gaming pcs for customers all day long with the radio on. I've seen the unit myself as I deliver the parcels to them.
It's a zero hours contract though so work isn't always guaranteed
Still fucking tempted though.

During Covid lockdown, when a skeleton crew of us were asked to come in so we could run the click and collect service and people could drive up to our door and collect things that were classed as essentials, like cleaning products, the company "forgot" to restrict what products could be purchased from the website, and in one of the more memorable incidents, a woman drove more than ten miles to collect a single egg cup. This, to her, was essential travel. The number of people who threw a tantrum because we wouldn't allow anyone without a face mask to come near the person handing over the goods was depressingly predictable. Numerous people kicked off because we wouldn't allow them through the door to browse.
Another one complained that our car park wasn't warm enough.
Sounds like the same experience my wife had to deal with while I was furloughed living the dream. Maybe you work at the same retail company who knows. Actually I wasted a lot of time in the garden getting drunk.

Been trying to help a student navigate the appeal system after they were suspended for not paying their fees. We’re almost at a point where if they can meet a couple of criteria they’ll be allowed back in which is pretty much as good as we can offer.
Unfortunately because they’re an international student their suspension had to reported to the Home Office which results in their visa being revoked. They can under the right conditions get a new one but it usually means returning home and re-applying for a student visa from there. My student is absolutely desperate not to go home and has been trying to avoid it for months. I mean desperate as in pleading to everyone from the VC down in some quite distressing language.
Since I got involved they’ve started coming to me from everything and their communication has deteriorated with their mental state. I’m sympathetic to their situation and doing everything I can - within the legal limits imposed by the Home Office - to help them. But they’re now making very credible messages regarding self-harm and worse and putting the blame squarely on me.
Obviously, me being bummed out us nothing compared to the threat of being removed from the country or taking one’s life but its extremely stressful seeing the turn and being explicitly cited as the reason for it.
Students threaten it a lot these days but through experience and training I’ve got a good sense of which students we need to be concerned about and this guy is as severe as an alert I’ve ever flagged.
There really isn’t anymore I could be doing for him and it really feels like it might not be enough.

simple that’s an incredibly shitty situation to be in considering that you’ve done everything you can to help. Desperation does force people to act out of character and try anything to achieve what they need so try not to take it to heart

Yeah that sucks man. Sorry to hear that.
Hear stories along similar lines where I am too. A lot of colleagues, including a GP of students we know, think that one of the downsides of Gen Zs being so aware and open about mental health etc, is that students who get dumped, or are a bit stressed by life, etc. get granted mitigating circumstances for exams and other things, whereas 10+ years ago they would've only been granted if someone in the family died or something similarly severe. Feels a bit boomer-y to say that but I think there's truth in it.

Thanks guys.
There is generally a downward trend in student mental health these days, as well as a tendency to use overly medicalised language to create an impression that normal exam anxiety is a major issue.
This one though really made my blood run cold. There are some things in tone and language that just don’t get used by the ones who are in a noisy flap that are immediate causes for alarm and this one was a real one.
Hopefully the exam board accept what we’ve asked to offer in terms of getting their enrolment reopened and the visa team can wrangle something. The student is truly petrified of the idea of having to go home with nothing to show but debt and an exclusion to their name, and that seems the big driver for everything else.
The rules around tuition fees and ever tightening visa restrictions are such bullshit. All fun and games when they’re just hypothetical numbers on Question Time, far less so when you’re watching someone’s life fall apart in close-up real time.

Right. At the risk of providing you all with a stick with which to beat me I'll do a screen photo in a bit. I get irrationally wound up when people say I lie. Give me 10 mins to get home. Did we ever get this from user geefe?

Been an oddly quiet few days without any standout gorms to deal with, so I can only imagine we are in the calm at the eye of the storm, and the weekend will be full of the kind of people who would ask if the walls and ceilings are marked down in the sale.

"Is your ceiling going on sale?" "No, why do you ask?" "Because it looks like it's about to come down."

When your intern permanently deletes a bunch of important and not-backed-up files from the shared drive without checking with anyone if that's ok, because he's taken it upon himself to tidy up, how do we feel about that fontgeeks?

It would leave me concerned about how long the intern will be interning.

Don't you love it how Word thinks there are completely different Word file formats and will only show one of those file formats by default in the save/open dialogue and then you go and have a look in the File Explorer and suddenly you can see all the Word file formats which to all intents and purposes are identical but Word thinks they aren't? Yeah anyway.

To be fair, docx became their standard document format in 2007, grandad.
