They really shouldn't be checking references until an offer is about to be made. Also, they shouldn't be speaking to anybody for anything other than dates and ensuring you worked there.

I don't think I've ever been asked for references until after I've received and accepted the offer. I certainly wouldn't give out references for a current job until everything was set in stone. Sounds like a bit of a clown show, probably not much comfort but perhaps you've dodged a bullet, hope something better comes along soon.

Help me, fellow fontgeeks.
Context:- I work part time hours, mainly due to childcare and being the person to do the drop offs and pick ups from primary school for my Year 1 son. I have always done this, and it's been the case since 2010 since my first son was on the scene. T'wife is a teacher so she does the main breadwinning/hours etc.
Anyway, I am looking to move into Financial Crime within the company, so I've have been doing extras such as Breach reporting for the team, so that I can have it on my internal CV to show background investigation etc.
My current managers are now pushing that I work this as additional hours, and to move from 24 hours a week, up to 34 hours a week. I want to move to FC, but I feel my current managers are pushing me to get extra hours from me before I leave this team.
I need to stay part time, and I don't want to move my kid into after school clubs as the expense is not worth it for the extra hours I'd be working to pay that off. The Managers are dangling this carrot that if I won't work extra hours, I won't be able to move to FC.
Just don't know how to play it, I have a regular 121 meeting tomorrow where I need to address this for good.

motti82 Not that I feel you should be doing these extra hours to move position, but if you feel that is going to be the only way (and it sucks if that's the case) could you make sure you do those hours when it suits you (i.e in the evenings)? It'll suck, but at least you can still be there for your son to do all the collections etc. They might be flexible on when you work those hours (if possible, might not be) if you show the flexibility that you're open to it (albeit on your terms). Usually I'd be telling you not to play their corporate bullshit games, BUT, if it's going to be short-term shit eating to get what you want, on this occasion it might be worth it?

You've hit the nail on the head with shit-eating for the short term. My thoughts are to do an extra couple of hours a week, which will keep the wolf from the door. I have a shadowing role in Financial Crime in the next month or so. That's where I need to be shit hot, look the part and get to know their team. That way, if/when a new role will crop up, I should be good enough to interview.

I read that. The country is fucked. Absolutely fucked. Anyone who seriously considers voting for the current cunts to stay in power and perpetuate this state of affairs is also a cunt.

Sounds like a plan - hope it all works out with minimal fuss for you Just got my 121 done. I think some of the situation had been a bit of shit stirring from another manager, or they've had to fold their hand. Been told I don't need to up or change my hours now, I can continue doing the breach reporting and hopefully by the time it's September, I'll have a foot in the door for my next position. It's been a relief to be told, as I was expecting to have to up my hours to keep the peace.

I thought of the FG IT dweebs as the last 3 hours of my work unfolded today.
My team took delivery of a new server today, however we are hosting it at an entirely different institution because... reasons.
Anyway, 3 of my team including I go to 'help' with the install. We meet the two representatives from the other institution, including the Head of IT who has worked there for 25 years. He's a lovely chap (maybe it was one of you guys? He certainly fit my preconception of FG IT phenotype). Anyway, little did he know that I'm a programmer with limited experience of installing servers (mostly hobbyist level understanding of building PCs etc) and my too colleagues sure as shit don't know anything here.
The FG IT guy asks straight off the bat: so how do you want to do this? And my boss goes: "we've never done this before !" The look on his face as he realised what his own boss must've roped him into.
Anyway, three hours later, between I and mostly him, we get it up and running, whilst my two colleagues mainly took photos pretending the whole thing was like a YouTube unboxing and watching from the sidelines like school children.
Professionally, absolutely cringe worthy few hours from my colleagues. To the FG IT person, thank you a hundred times for your patience.

Spent yesterday afternoon and this morning being grilled by thick-as-fuck, money-grubbing lawyers pontificating on things they know nothing about. I desperately wanted to give them my free and frank opinion, but gritted teeth was my only option. Cunts.
Only upside was seeing one of the few serious lawyers in the room rolling his eyes at the others' fuckwittery.

Unfortunately you get people trying to live in their storage units. Obviously a massive no-no and they have to leave but it's a sad situation. Most companies do 8-12 weeks half price for customers so you can get something the size of a garden shed for around £25 a week for up to 3 months. It's cold, but it's also dry and protected from the elements. So you can see why people try it when they are desperate.

I've been working 10.25 shifts for 6 months. Recent rosters come out, I've been placed on it again for another 3. I now have to go on a FLEXIBLE working arrangement through work just to go back to regular 9-5 Mon-Fri? Absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah, I've only just started in this job, and the store manager has told me the same. Also, you have to lock up the store in a certain order, so you close all the shutters in a systematic way as you go round the site, as homeless people will try and get in one before you get to shut it while you're not able to see what's going on. It's only happened once at stockport where I am, but I just felt sad but you just can't have people inside. Fucking useless government.

One of the less shit things about having a dedicated office day in the middle of the week is that it makes it harder to lose track of what day it is. The days do definitely do start to merge when you're WFH.
Not that it's exactly a hardship to look at my watch mind you...

Think they are interviewing a lot of people for that one, the one I went for last week they only interviewed 4 people so statistically that one has the the better chance

Chap from India has arrived today for a couple of months from one our sister companies to learn how to draw our products on AutoCAD/Revit.
Really feel for the CAD department. They're basically outsourcing their work and asking them to assist via training.
Oh, and we've changed the common room (where people eat lunch) into his bedroom for two months and he'll actually be living there because our French parent company won't stump up the bill for a hotel.
Fucking bizarre.
