I've seen a few decent deals for blue lights card holders on HUKD before. I wouldn't say no to one, anyway.

I can recommend self storage if anyone is in the, "fuck this shit, I'm sick of it but what the hell else can I do" camp, as there is about as much stress as getting up from the sofa to make a cup of tea.
Should have done it years ago.

"Storage space available, as long as it will fit in a barrel in my garage, and if you want access to your items you'll just have to hope that I'm home at the time and not on the porcelain throne. £50 a week per barrel. Also, does anyone want to buy any barrels."

I made it through the redundancies unscathed, but a few colleagues I knew well have been cut. Selfishly I feel 'good', but then I also feel like fuck I've got to find something else. The email HR sent out...
"We understand that this news can be unsettling, and we want to assure you that we're here to support you every step of the way. Your well-being is our priority, and we're committed to providing assistance and guidance as we navigate through this transition together."
Vomit.

I kind of feel the same way about such messaging, but you'd be surprised how many people on the other side who would be annoyed not to have received such a message...

Overhead a phone call from the guy hot desking next to me.
My company is spending a 6 figure sum raising the handrails that overlook my offices atrium (4 floors) because they were before regulation height.
By 5 millimetres.
I mean wow, glad they're fixing that. That's going to make all the difference and will save lives. Definitely.
(To be fair they're raising the rail by 15 mm, so it'll be a whole cm above regulation height. Good to see that level of future proofing).

Hard to win either way - vomit inducing support message or a "fuck you" deal with it approach. Whichever one you receive sounds insincere and annoying (having been on the end of both styles of messaging).

I had to laugh at the bit about HR being there to help you. HR are the last people I would want to help me at work.

It took me longer than I'd like to admit to realise that HR are absolutely not your friends. They're there to protect the company above all else. Any "help" they offer you is only ever going to be with that interest in mind.
I think younger me would be amazed at what a jaded, bitter old cunt I've become.

Absolutely this 10000% couldn't have said it better myself. Last place where they fucked me up, the hr woman was all nice up till the point where i put her in a position of, so I've not done anything wrong and neither have you, so what do we do now. She immediately, and I mean fucking immediately turned into a bitch. End of.

I don't think it makes you jaded as long as you understand what the function of HR is then you can have a productive relationship, such as reporting workplace harassment and whatnot, but even in that situation it can be fucked especially if the person being reported on has any significant relationship with HR.

I still remember working in a school in Brum and I was off sick with stress because teaching isn't great in the UK. HR tried to gaslight me into thinking that I wouldn't be eligible for sick pay so I should resign. Obviously I knew what my rights were, especially as I used to be a civil servant for the DWP, but it really opened up my eyes.

Yeah, it’s true. They are obviously there to protect the company but that also means protecting them from fucking you over in a way that could have legal ramifications.
‘Consulting HR’ usually means ‘are we allowed to do this?’ so you can thank the constant erosion of our workers rights for any foolishness rather than HR itself.

I was dragged into a competency assessment early on in my career (my boss fucking hated me and to this day I have no idea why). My overriding memory of the mammoth four hour hearing was coming back from breaks and the HR representative asking me if I had any holiday plans. This was right before they slapped me with a final written warning threatening me with termination.
I’m sure there are exceptions to the rule, but in my experience HR will never, ever be in the side of the little guy in the fight.

I learnt 2 years into my first job that HR were shit when they told me that they saw no value in training people.
Various other company HR departments haven’t been much better but I know to never ever trust anything they, or any manager, says about your future

I don't think HR are really there to help/protect the actual business/organisation either, just some form of narrow legal issue/risk.
I've got some actually good HR people at my work though (and some terrible ones of course).
The main issue I have with performance management is that we are usually a very flat, hand off organisation with lots of independence/free rein for individuals. But when there is a performance issue, to get the evidence of behaviour (and improvements) or do an improvement plan, you basically need to become a micro manager, which feels bad for everybody involved.

We have a system where if you perform too well, and that's recognised in your annual review, then the larger organisation will move you to another part of the business and make use of you on other important things.
Unfortunately, all the managers know that would happen and so no one ever gets that rating (or the associated rewards) as they'd lose those that do the best work and so everyone gets given an 'average' rating.
If you're shit you get put on performance review which managers also don't want to deal with so that's extremely rare as well, even when it's needed.

I've worked in places where managers were measured on how many PIPs they issued.
This meant that even if the the entire team was performing well, they'd have to choose one person to get placed on the PIP.
My current place doesn't do that but I actually think it might be going that way.

Grab hold of a wooden surface as you read this. I don't want to jinx it but... ...I got hold of him about 4.30pm. The management team have asked to check references as a tick box exercise before making a formal offer. I pointed out there 4 reference letters uploaded to their CV warehouse job site already but I promised to send him contact info of management team members at my last 2 employers for them to call and speak to. I tried tracking the COO of my last job and the CEO of the company I was working for before that. The COO gave me the thumbs up to send on his info. Chasing down the CEO tomorrow. So, assuming they sort out references tomorrow or Wednesday, they should have a contract proposal for me by the end of the week. With a bit of luck, I could start next Monday. *touches wood* Heh. I just realized I decided to not tell the kids until they arrive tomorrow (my daughter and my girlfriend's son are with us 1 week out of 2) and not to tell parents, sister, in-laws, etc until I actually signed a contract but here I am at FontGeek sharing the excitement (which seemed like the done thing, really). Thanks for the support/comic relief everyone. I sent out the contact info for the references on Tuesday and both references confirmed to me they spoke to the recruiter (Tuesday & Wednesday). They both said they had a positive chat. One said "I think you can expect an offer from them, I hope it will be a generous one". Didn't hear anything yesterday, so sent out a quick follow up email today, to avoid it dragging into next week. Got a phone call this afternoon from the recruiter. References were positive but at the management committee this morning, they had made the final decision and opted for another candidate, which was unexpected news as they sounded ready to make the offer on Monday, following references. The HR person seemed annoyed himself, I don't know if he jumped the gun and was annoyed at having to backpedal or if they told him to get the ball rolling and then changed their mind, making him look like he jumped the gun. Either way, I was expecting an offer and then to start working again next week or so, so this came as quite a surprise. :-/ I told them to get in touch if the other candidate falls through. You never know but it's a slim chance no doubt. Back to square 1: comb through job ads and send out resumes. *sigh*
