So my colleague who I've been good friends with for about 10 years, was told by someone that there were a few tears in the HR office after some of the consultancy sessions due to him. What the fuck is that sort of emotional blackmail bullshit. Yeah HR have a tough time, guided by the exec/managers, but fuck me.. I can't imagine he said anything overly offensive? or he'd be sacked. I'm confused. Few tears because they were sad for him or because he was being made redundant and didn't say nice things? Tears because he had grievance, which I think spoke I about before. Unfairly scored and the process wasn't consistent in his opinion. I think he also threatened a tribunal.

+1. Good luck. 21 years is a long time but I am sure the skills are transferable. You don't last that long if not.

20 odd roles in my wider business area at are being put at risk of redundancy as they're shipping the work off to India. Doesn't effect me directly but does impact people I've worked with.
It's inevitable they'll be moving more roles over there.
Quite a bit shift in the strategy, I've already said I'm not really a fan of the current direction of strategy and this just further reinforces that I don't really feel like I have any desire to remain in this organisation.
At the same time I can't be arsed looking elsewhere as I'm very lazy and have no energy to job hunt, but if my job gets removed I'd be looking to move elsewhere before taking another role here.

I’m having a mixed bloody week and I apologise in advance for those being threatened/laid off for what this ends with.
So the bad - I’m one of you! We’ve had consultants come in asking what we do minute but minute - this isn’t about job losses you understand - until it is as the first team to be done are getting two job losses and one demotion.
When your niche team has been without management for 5 months and put on absolute busy work that has nothing to do with your previous role or experience, and you feel set up to fail against this background, it feels not good. I’ve got a meeting tomorrow with 3 directors about this nothing burger of a project and am expecting poor feedback based on what we’ve managed to produce (or not). All very worrying.
Anyway the good (and I feel a bit guilty with stuff going on above). I has an interview! Yay! I’d lost all hope because my other half had cheekily put an app in too, and got a knock back early last week. I’ve been checking my inbox like a motherf*cker and had lost all hope. So hopefully I won’t get too demoralised and crushed tomorrow because I’ve got some work to do with preparing for a presentation/scenario.
Also - what’s the craic with interview attire these days? Ties seem to have gone out of fashion (which I think is bonkers) so am I going Clarkson esque with a suit jacket and open collar or is it even less formal than that now?

I always wear a shirt and tie to a first interview, personally.
No trousers, obvs.

What kind of job is it? I’d ask the recruiter what’s expected, if it’s a very casual place I’d maybe go with just a shirt and chinos or something and not bother with a tie.

I’m not in this LinkedIn, recruitment world, which frankly terrifies me. It’s a direct application and I’m going in blind. It’s a video interview if that changes things, and I don’t want to reveal too much for jinxing and privacy reasons, but it’s basically a quango type scenario, so government-ish?

Unless it's an artsy / media thing, you won't go wrong by over dressing, especially if you are external. So tie, shirt and jacket still fine.

The worst stag do I ever went to had a professional organisation streamlining specialist attach himself to me. His entire job was going into businesses and laying people off and he spent the entire night telling me ‘hilarious’ stories about it.
Absolute fucking psychopath. I don’t know how he slept at night much less turn them into funny anecdotes.

Professional organisation streamlining specialist? God that really does sound like the job a total and utter wanker would admit to be doing.

I can’t count the number of interviews I’ve terminated immediately because the candidate wasn’t wearing a jacket and tie. Even when they tell me they’re a woman.

I'm almost certain there was a King Of The Hill episode centred around Dale becoming one of these when his boss realised he didn't give a shit about people, before a magical reset where he became an exterminator again.

These are basically who have been brought in at hours. All ex-industry going indie consultant too (read - were en route to getting found out in the industry IMO). Always turn out to have some sort of connection to an exec within the company they are doing over too.
I’m finding it hard to parse whether some of the replies are jokey or not regards dress tbh. I suspect what I’ll do is what I’ve always done and suit up. Whether or not it’s modern I think it shows respect and that you are serious about it.

I go back and forth on that idea. I think smart casual is fine these days, but I guess it depends on what kind of industry you're working in. A suit and tie don't mean a lot in mine, anyone can wear that and know fuck all.

The first part is serious and what I still do.

Useful reading these sartorial tips as I'm off for an interview tomorrow too. Trying to judge when to raise a request to work compressed hours, as my decision would kinda hang off whether I can work it as a 4 day week, or 9 day fortnight (original advert suggested they would consider it)...
I'm assuming it's best to keep that to myself and then negotiate if I get offered it? Definitely a bit out of practice with all this nonsense!

Never seen it though It's OK, not great but watchable, one of those films where the content/acting/plot is all fine but the undercurrent (in reality) is about a bloke being a complete cunt.

I reckon formal is a good shout for a government job. Naked from the waist down for a video interview though obviously. Try to keep your hands above the desk.

It’s not my hands staying below the desk they should worry about. In serious business is it likely to be held against me that I’ve completely let myself go and look 8 years older and horrible

I’d hate to be forced into the hours necessary for a 4 day compressed week though. I’d have personally thought specific salary and conditions is something to bring up at offer rather than interview as you don’t actually have anything to negotiate with before that. That’s what I did last time but it was internal and I knew the club. I reckon a general question at the ‘anything you want to ask us’ bit about what their hybrid arrangements or what have you are could be OK, but make sure you have a poker face ready for if you don’t love the answer. I’m not an authority on this so interested in other answers here - no scope for salary stuff for me but definitely want to know about the other stuff. Best of luck.
