Tough Day at Work…

An interesting read that was in the Guardian's gaming email today - Game developers leaving the industry

In the second week of August, I applied for a job. Thought I’d done a pretty damn good application to be honest. About 1500 words on top of all the work history stuff so not speculative and certainly not low-effort.

The closing date, which I now cannot confirm as it was amended, was either one or two weeks into September. However they reserved the right to close early. The wording on the response is as follows:

‘We confirm that your application has been received. It will be reviewed shortly after the closing date, following which we will contact you.‘

Just logged onto their site to see that they actually closed the application a few days after I submitted. Am I being naive and desperate to hope that their shortlisting time was diaried for after the original date and they stick to this or have they genuinely not been bothered to even send me a one word reply after I sent them 1500 words?

I’m going to ring them tomorrow to ask and will be having a serious think about whether to send them something if they’ve done me the dirty. This is an actual ombudsman, who I would expect to have better values than that, especially after working in the industry they police and knowing what customer care standards they expect of us.

I know if what I suspect has happened that criticising them will do me no good and probably burn bridges. But I just think sometimes people need telling don’t they?

Furthermore, I’ve noticed that on logging on, I can alter my ‘peronal details’ so maybe they aren’t as professional as they think!

Depending on the system it might just be central HR that would respond to a process question. I don't think any harm is asking what's going on. But also, I don't think 4 weeks is that crazy for a sift to take, especially over summer... I've got a team member who got invited to interview after like 6 weeks. This is all public sector of course.

I once got my original job offer like 3 months after the assessment day / interview.

To be honest the fact that these recruitment drives always seem to be for 20 case workers makes me worry there’s high turnover for a reason.

Regards contacting applicants just for a no, surely there is an automated process for that available?

It’s just so disheartening the effort you have to put into applications sometimes. I’m not a fan of multi-stage recruitment in general but if there was a process whereby you could do a very basic thing for them to sift and then they invited you to put the effort in after that it’d be so much better at my end. I did two applications again I thought were decent* in spring to a public body and did get rejections, but they then don’t offer feedback unless you are interviewed. I get the logistics but from a feels perspective, I need my weekends and each of these applications represents one being sacrificed.

I've mostly stopped playing as my mates I play with are a bit unreliable, hopefully that changes with the new one for a bit.

Complete wipe out mate, not hearing anything back. Got put forward for one but that's gone dead as well.

Pretty much given up for now as it's not very good for me mentally. Although nor is work, had someone giving me shit the other day and it took pretty much everything I had not to tell him to fuck right off.

Yeah I know that feeling. Sorry to hear that, but it's not for ever. Something will turn up. Just keep applying.

Fuck that person. It won't help but never forget that person most likely has a miserable depressing life with no joy and this is the only time in their life they feel they can weild power because their own life is so God damned pathetic.

Yeah, know what you mean again. I struggle with it too, but we'll done for not reacting.

In job related news I've had my second interview now and it went OK I think.

The additional manager present at this face to face asked me about my current nhs position and the fact I'd only worked there a month. So my answer was the truth which is that they've started to introduce evening and weekend work which isn't what I'm after and that it's a shame etc.

Was prepared for it, just need to hope they're happy and accept my answer for it.

Should find out tomorrow or Monday

Sorry I meant TEACHING job that doesn't involve children or having to work on weekends, evenings although in my last job I regularly worked until 9pm, and 8.30 on a friday.

Check out a company called Sense Learning. They provide for kids who can't/won't go into school. It's good money (on a self-employed basis so ymmv with that), term time only, pick and choose your hours/case load.
