Last throes before a collapse, maybe? It feels like the coming generations aren't going to accept the working conditions ours and previous generations did because they aren't getting the life opportunities that came with it. Before the ruling class lets anything change, they need to just squeeze a few drops more blood out of everyone. It's happening everywhere. Rising hours, worsening conditions, less pay comparative to higher prices... Sorry, cheery sort aren't I? Not sure I'll see it in my lifetime but the current economic model of CONSTANT GROWTH isn't going to be sustainable indefinitely. So a collapse is inevitable. Whether or not things get better after that I wouldn't want to wager.

I was genuinely shocked when I joined the corporate world about just how short term focused everything is, so I have to presume that the bosses and billionaires know it's not sustainable, too.
Although, who knows. We've let it get this far and bought in and worked for it all, maybe we'll all just say "sure" and shoulder our yokes. It seems likely, tbh.

At the company where I worked for 25+ years there was one of our offices with its own on site bar up until quite recently Where I work now a lunchtime pint is a sackable offence, how times have changed! This is the place where talking about anything other than work can get you fired right?

Nothing will change, people just constantly eat the shit shovelled to them by the rich and until that changes nothing does.

Add me to the list of starting work (mid 90s for me) and the pub on a Friday lunchtime being virtually everyone, bosses included.
Plenty of evenings after work drinking too - usually on an empty stomach. I reckon I've done some significant damage to my health as a result, but it was fun.
The first time I went to Poland, I took my team out for lunch, with the COO who flew over with me. Me and the head honcho order a beer and all the Poles ordered soft drinks. We thought it very odd only for the office manager to tell us afterwards that drinking during work hours is illegal in Poland and that each company has to have a breatherliser on site.
I still always order beer when over there, and the locals still go with a Coke or some such.

I've got a second interview on site for that job I went for. That's pretty cool. Next Thursday!

Just taken a drive out to check it out. 20 mins drive, and that was with a fair bit of traffic. That's absolute bliss for me, compared to over an hour each way at least on the m-bastard-60

My boss’s boss (who is shit and creepy as fuck) has just been bumped up two levels in another function. The guy one below who was really good has decided to quit.
Still no sign of a job ad for my current boss’s job and he should be starting his new one in two weeks.
So tempted to apply for an external job I’ve found. I know I should but it’ll also be more effort and new, I’ve settled into easy and routine.

I would go for it, because if you don't Quaddy is going to go for it and he is a job magnet 😂

Going to spend this week sorting my cv for it when I get time. It was there a few months ago and has come back up so I suspect competition from anyone they have internal may be minimal as it’s a HO department role.

You'll lose nothing for applying, except a few moments of your time. And even if it comes to nothing, you will be better prepared if something else comes up.

I might apply for the job two levels up here too. With my current boss’s going there’s no one that level who is suitable and no one else in the business that knows what the department does (including most of us).
I know I can do the job better than the hit that was doing it (he was one only interested in self promotion and taking credit for others work), I’m just not part of the clique of people at that level. I’m only not one level below that position because there’s never been a vacancy 1 level above me in what I do in the last 7 years.

Sounds like you have everything to gain and nothing to lose, to me.

Zero stress in what I currently do is the only thing I could lose.

Ah, that might be a show stopper then. Well, it would for me for sure.
What are the pros and cons of both jobs?

Con of the external one is it would be an hour drive instead of 20 minutes, at a smaller company, it’s just what I do now but with more managers below me. Pro is a lot more money than I’m on now and not being here.
Con of the internal one is that it almost certainly won’t happen. Pro is the extra money and everyone here already knows I’m the one to go to on so many things (just the guy at the top doesn’t because he only talks to his direct reports). The job also has more potential to be interesting.
Or stick with what I do. Less money, zero stress, everyone think I’m great.

Comment of the day so far. Can't believe you are promoting Ukrainian people with what they are doing to Palestinians. Tried to correct her and was having none of it.
Public eh 😂

I think the double decker version of the sunshine bus must be parked up outside today. All I've dealt with so far today are people who would be pointing at planes in amazement if we didn't have a roof over us.

Just watched this Very poor imo. Special effects are diabolical, seems it expects the audience to imagine most of what's happening. No xenomorphs, just a bunch of something called xenophobes, which are like bald humanoid creatures that spew hate, but nowhere near as cool. 2/10

Asked for help with the XML issues and the dickheads high up gave us this idiot to help out but its not for the XML issues. His job seems to be mess with the trello cards and turn each one into essay of bullshit bingo and waste time in meetings with dumb questions

Corporatism and in particular corporate speech is infuriating me.
Example 1 - a consultancy firm, six months ago, did process mapping with a team - on 12 feet long teams of brown packing paper and post-it notes. Fair enough - but then nobody ever typed this up, which we’ve been asked to do now. Being taught the software, we first look at the photos I’ve taken of these absolute tapestries to see what’s going on with them.
‘Right I think we can all agree that this colour is your value addeds’.
I’m sorry but my WHAT NOW? Breaking this down, it’s whether this part of the process ‘adds value’ (urrrghhh) to customer or business.
Just call them benefits and drawbacks. Or pros and cons. ‘These are your value addeds’ is not a real sentence. For one thing, my phone wants desperately to change that to ‘value adders’.
It’s just really poor communication. For one thing it changes every month or two, so the real purpose is clear - a status symbol to show that you belong to the in-crowd - so it’s a demonstration of ego or insecurity when communication should be about clarity. Fuck this noise.

Example 2 - another consultancy firm is asking us to quantify tasks to times, so I expect I won’t be dealing with this for much longer.
But in any case, they’ve made this spreadsheet for us where we put a % of our week and it converts that to hours. I’m sorry, but I do not think in terms of percentage of time, I think in terms of, you know, actual time.
Consultant unimpressed when I express this. Like, really unimpressed. ‘Well we’ve done this for a lot of places and clients and have tried different ways but nothing is ever perfect. For one thing, people have different working hours, some are full time, some part time so it doesn’t work’.
FML. This highly sought after and doubtless higher paid person doesn’t understand that percentages of time will ratio up or down with the total working hours. This is basic maths to me. But then from my perspective, I’m asked to determine what percentage of my week 40 minutes is.
I’m supposed to guess a rough percentage and then ‘sense check’ (ANOTHER FUCKING ONE!) against the hours the spreadsheet returns. So, essentially, I’m to trial and error it.
I’ve reversed this on my spreadsheet and will now probably get fired. Pretty sure this person is very pally with top brass here.

Surely just "value adds" would be the correct marketing fuckwit speak?
We've had a data breach, so all hands on deck.
This has been caused by some idiots using an AI meeting transcription tool. One of our control suggestions is to completely lock down 3rd party add-ins in approved applications. We've been told we cannot, because "some of the exec won't like that".
Oh, ok. Well, they can be the ones who explain why not to the ICO.
