Just found out a job I went for has had 800 applicants so far and it's not even closed yet. It's for quite a senior role as well. Won't be getting that then. People are always put off on the numbers you see on LinkedIn (or other job sites) for applicants, but it's not even full applications. Just people that clicked on apply. I wouldn't count yourself out at all even after that. I work in corp recruitment and it'll be less than 5% of those potential 800 that are remotely suitable, and then it'll drill down even more based on location, salary expectations etc. You'd be surprised at the sheer volume of applications with no correlation to what the job asks for. It's also a reflection of how shit the job market is globally. Lots of folks out of work, using a "spray and pray" approach to apply to any and all job openings. Hope this one works out well for you!

"Madam, as I have said three times now, I cannot do a refund for that item. The purchase date was March of last year, and you've stated that it's not faulty in any way."
"But I don't want it anymore, what does it matter if I bought it last year?"
"It matters quite a bit when the returns policy is 28 days."
"Where does it say that then, because I haven't seen that anywhere?"
"It's on these (A1 size) posters on the wall here, all along the till area. And on either side of the main doors. It's also mentioned on our website. And it's printed on the back of the receipt paper."
"For fucks sake, I'll be going to The Range from now on instead of this place."
"I think you'll find that their returns policy is only 14 days, and has even more strictly worded terms than ours, so really our policy is quite generous by comparison."

I can get a full English at mine including a coffee for £3.40 on Fridays.
I avoid that canteen or I’ll be 20 stone.

Work canteens are mythical to me that KS to stories like this. Never worked anywhere with one, don't know anyone of my age who has. Not sure they are real TBh.

When they were building where the canteen is a load of people wanted there to be a bar as well, there was outrage from mainly grads that there wasn’t going to be one.
There used to be an onsite clubhouse but it was like something out of the 80s. It got destroyed for the new building.

When I joined central government 25 years, they'd only just closed departmental onsite bars. Friday pub lunch was still a thing for a good few years though. Not anymore.

At my first job our team used to go out for drinks every couple of months. That’s loads compared to now where it might happen at Christmas but often doesn’t because a few of us are too busy. Everyone has at least 30 minutes to drive home, half have about an hour to get home.
I’d like to have experienced those days of going to the pub every week with a team but that’s dead now.

When I started work (actually third job) but only about 18 at the time I worked for the civil service, PSA Projects, who (in those days) did all the architectural, structural, electrical works etc for any civil service building so hospitals, law courts, police stations, arm barracks you name it, they had the quintessential tea lady (who was aged about 65) who dutifully walked around with a trolley at 11am and 3pm or something everyday with a trolley full of snacks and a tea urn, there was also quite a substantial canteen, a crusty cheese and onion roll was my elevenses snack of choice. Happy (weird) times!
Being the civil service, naturally I used to bunk off as much as I could, taking the absolute piss with 'Flexi-Time' and the like, one day about 11AM when I was bunking off (literally) and down at thew local WHSmith browsing the books I clocked eyes with my boss doing the exact same thing, we never spoke of it!

That's a shame, in my last job that was a regular thing. I quite enjoyed it I guess because a good deal of my workmates were also very close friends. Some...not so much.

Where I use to work in 2022, we use to go out for drink on fridays (always the same people more or less) and it was great. Built working friendships with beers and pizza or nice burger. Where I work now, there is staff bar and its really good and cheap but not many use it unless there is a event. Have met some new people going there
When I first starting working a full time job after university, never had nice canteen or staff bars. When I got a new job in London for a design company, they would treat us to lunch every friday (and it would be good) until the new CFO came in and cut that out for the staff (and that bastard got 2012 Olympics tickets despite doing no work on it!) Of course he got the nickname, Mike Hunt for the office.

I’ve only worked at one office with a canteen, which was pretty good but we shared it with the Daily Express so the feeling that I was probably surrounded by absolute cunts somewhat spoiled it.

When I worked for a large, well known Telecommunications firm less than a decade ago, no serious work happened on Friday afternoons.
Ostensibly because of not wanting to cover weekend fixes, but mostly because the entire company went to various pubs for a long lunch every Friday lunchtime.

My work canteen is still pretty decent. We've managed to get the toast machine back after people complained, and last week they even had poached eggs available.
This is good because for a time the only breakfast option was bacon sandwiches or croissant, and egg on toast feels marginally healthier. Because eggs are super low in calories and cholesterol.

When I started up at work friday lunch in the pub with the group was a given. Pint or two, nice chat with all including the boss, then back to it. There also used to regularly be drinks from 5pm on a Friday at the local pub which would put some snacks out as they made a fair bit from us. We were technically civil service scientists back then, no worries about jobs and the research was scientist-led so much more interesting. Sadly academia has changed drastically and that is no longer a thing. Everyone tends to have to drive, or is too busy these days thanks to all the additional workload and red tape. Plus, we are beholden to whatever government want us to do now, so the science is less interesting and changes every few years when there's a reshuffle/election which doesn't help build on anything from before, so it's all disjointed. Sad times. Work was much more enjoyable back then. If i wore glasses, they'd be rose-tinted glasses, filled with tears.

In my previous job we had an on-site catering company. You could order from your desk and it would get delivered to you.
We also got an allowance of £2 for breakfast on early shifts. Well until someone complained to the catering company about the food.. then it became toast gate, and we got delivered about 9 rounds of buttered toast.. which was barely toasted as a punishment. Bloody weird company.

I think work in general was better when people took things slower, everyone wants things done quickly and we need to go faster, more productivity, now!

Perversely it is in my current job where the after work drinks are more prevalent than most jobs I had in my 20's/30's (other than the Virgin in Camden where we went out most weekends) - now I'm 250 miles away from the office and there are paid for drinks every week or so. I do try and make sure my trips to the office co-incide with them, but not always possible.

At the company where I worked for 25+ years there was one of our offices with its own on site bar up until quite recently
Where I work now a lunchtime pint is a sackable offence, how times have changed!

I remember working for a place in central Manchester for 10 years. Right in piccadilly gardens. Pretty much every single day, around 4pm, the boss would say to me and a guy I worked with, "right, I've had enough, let's go for a drink", and we'd have about 3 or 4 pints and then make our own way home.
Every day for 10 years. Was great.
Not now though, everyone seems obsessed with inducing burnout it seems.

I think work in general was better when people took things slower, everyone wants things done quickly and we need to go faster, more productivity, now! But how will the efficiencies be synergised if you’re not producing more than you were yesterday eh? Gotta achieve that YoY 10x growth!

Last throes before a collapse, maybe? It feels like the coming generations aren't going to accept the working conditions ours and previous generations did because they aren't getting the life opportunities that came with it.
Before the ruling class lets anything change, they need to just squeeze a few drops more blood out of everyone.
It's happening everywhere. Rising hours, worsening conditions, less pay comparative to higher prices...
Sorry, cheery sort aren't I?
