Had a good laugh this morning. Our CEO is stepping down and moving to the board.. well basically he sold the company last year and has made millions. There were redundancies earlier in the year due to all this.
"we are compiling a special book filled with photos, stories, and memories from his time with the company. This book will be a tribute to his years of service and a way for us to express our collective gratitude for his leadership. "

That sort of thing is a stretch these days even for the public sector. But a private company? Get fucked!

Yeah. He's overseen two redundancies whilst I've been here. None of the CEO ever left. There's been loads of stupid decisions, but I guess they weren't stupid.. because he's made a fucking mint.

Just speak to me, I’ll explain and we’ll move on. I’ve just joined the company and I’ll occasionally ask people about themselves, it doesn’t mean that we’re not working at the same time. I can quite easily write a document and talk at the same time, it’s not that difficult Come on Retro how can they speak to you?

Received a warning in work today, bit worrying as I’ve only been there 3 months Someone anonymously complained that my colleagues and I had been talking about non-work related issues when at our desks, nothing bad, just holidays, food and plans for the weekend etc Apparently that type of chat is frowned upon... 28 days later:

It’s a bit of a ‘careful what you wish for’ at our place. Now we are back in the office, we can sit and ‘collaborate’ for hours. I’ll bollock on with someone for ages and book it as a team meeting.
In mitigation, we do also fully embrace headphones and use them as a traffic light system.
Headphones on = fuck off Headphones off = tell me about your new kitten
So if you don’t like chatting, put your headphones on.

I would assume so. I was quite shocked, considering it’s what I would assume to be “normal” office behaviour, so googled it when I get home and it’s relatively common for people to get warnings for talking Fucking hell that's nuts. I sit at my desk making immature fart noises for large portions of my day so I would be fired on the spot if I worked there.
Get out of there ASAP

Yea, headphones in was my tactic long before lockdown. Helps with the Sony ones that it can be genuinely impossible to hear someone talking behind you. Avoids the people who don't want to tap on the shoulder.

We're only in the office one day a week still, but I'm increasingly leaning towards being antisocial and popping headphones in. One person in particular just witters about any old shit (wrestling, types of cheeses, American football) constantly and it gets so distracting. You can tell that the people he's talking at (not with) are sick of it too. His direct report doesn't even sit next to him now.
Funnily enough he spent almost the full day recently just working, so maybe someone had a word...

I had a good day nattering with my boss yesterday. We agreed we were not being productive but it was too much fun regardless. I like going into the office and seeing colleagues, but when I'm in work mode leave me alone.

Id definitely be the asshole boss who asks my peeps to stop wearing headphones all the time while in the office when we are supposed to be collaborating.

Is one “collaborating” typing up TPS reports at their workstation?

Someone I use to work, shame he never understood "if headphones on: fuck off". He would just tap on my desk when sitting next to me, I started to ignore him and then he message our line manager saying "I wouldn't answer his problem"
As he didn't know something despite being on that department longer than me. He is such a selfish twat, thankfully he was not in the office much

Had a week off, visiting family, and back to work tomorrow. But it's not just a normal day, oh no. Our heads of department are organising an all team meeting in fucking Leeds
So rather than heading back home tonight I'm heading to Leeds instead to stay over the night before. Because the alternative is going home tonight and making a 7 hour round trip tomorrow.
I'm going to take some time back later this week because there are a number of things I'd rather be doing than sitting on a train for 3.5 hours.
And the train in getting tonight is now 30 minutes late - it's gone from 10 minutes late to 30 minutes late in the 15 minutes I've been at the station.
I honestly can't imagine getting anything useful out of this meeting, and certainly nothing that couldn't be delivered in a Teams meeting.
I'm considering pulling a sicky and just getting the train heading in the opposite direction so I can do home. I won't but it's very tempting.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm driving to Manchester and back tomorrow to have lunch.

Any time we are expected to go to head office for an all hands meeting I just book the time off, I've been to one in about two years. Can't be arsed with the pointlessness of it at all.

Haha me too, it's such a coincidence I seem to need time off or Mrs Mercury has a convenient hospital appointment!

I skipped our recent quarterly all hands bullshit as I had a genuine excuse. Always makes me chuckle the number of people who never take that day of the week off individually, but suddenly have plans for annual leave when it's mandatory all hands time. I'm hoping they start to get the message soon.
Utterly tedious waste of the company's money and my time!

I'm definitely in the "Headphones on = fuck off" camp, and yet I get divvies still saying "why didn't respond to me shouting across the office".
Because I'm actually trying to do some work, and ignore you lot wasting my time.
I tend to find that when I go in the office 2 days a week, people will save up all their little shitty questions/IT problems until they see me face to face, as it's easier to ignore people on Teams.

Apparently I need to 'think' about how I can be cross-functional. Bear in mind I'm a software tester, but because we don't have the resource, they need someone to look at pipelines, deployments etc, so the senior dev can do more.. dev work. How about no.

My saga continues.
Been offered an interview for a job that is 15 mins away, is more money and no weekend or evening work.
Where I am at the nhs, the people are good and the work is OK, albeit the same each day, but the negative points are tied to a headset all day long and weekend and evening work looming.
I really like working for the nhs but I've got to put myself first so will at least attend this interview. The fact that it's only 15 mins down the road is a big thing for me as I'm in the sticks and it's hard to get jobs local - you normally have to drive for fucking years to get anywhere.
So will see.
Again.

It can't hurt to go for the interview, quadfather. Sometimes, you have to put yourself first.
