I'm sorry, no film that features both Doctor Who and the Tetley Tea Folk can be considered a dog.

I admire the effort no matter if it looks shit. Better than some of the half arsed cgi you get in some films.

I will ALWAYS take practical effects anyday.

I've never been a fan of that attitude, personally, because for me an effect is an effect; if a practical effect looks good, fab. If a digital effect looks good, fab. We're long past the floaty unreal CG of the 90s, just as we're long past the unreal stop-motion or forced perspective of earlier decades.
It's also worth bearing in mind that almost every film that touts its "practical effects" will have had significant digital work done. I've seen people praise Fury Road for being great because "it was all done for real", whereas George Miller himself has said he doesn't think there's a shot in the film that doesn't have a digital effect in it.

It is an interesting phenomenon though; knowing that something is being done “for real” makes it far more exciting than if it a just CGI. I remember in the Matrix 2 when Neo fights the smiths I was extremely disappointed when it switched to computer generated stuff.

I agree with you in terms of fights and stuff because what I like watching there is a very well trained human being. I think with monsters or other impossible things it's whatever works best.
But even with fights, you get things like wire removal or removing crash mats or adding weapons to hands. Imagine The Raid or the John Wick films without that.

I think real stunt work is far superior to CGI wankery. But effects in general, like spaceships and shit? Whatever looks best for the shot.
Phantom Menace would almost certainly have looked a lot better with fewer practical effects

The problem being, with Alien III anyway, the production was so chaotic they couldn't get Boss Films' rod puppet to match what Amalgamated Dynamics' xenomorph suit looked like on set, so there's a HUGE mismatch. It's glaring. They just didn't communicate between departments. Fincher was at fault for that, but he was so beleaguered just getting through principal photography I think a lot of these things just got past him. I think even his line producer (who should've been making a lot of this stuff easier) was a studio stooge there just to spy on him and report up the exec chain.
The rod puppet work in Alien III is shit, there's no two ways about it. It sometimes looks otherworldly which was the point (with the alien doing impossible things) but it's mostly horribly composited into the scenes it's in. Because it was horribly rushed.

There was a Prey screening at SDCC and it’s been getting a hell of a lot of praise. Very violent and gory. Splendid.

I always take feedback fron fan screenings with a HUGE pinch of salt, but I'm allowing a faint glimmer of hope that it won't be shit... Guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks anyway.

As they’re all on Disney+ now I did a Predator series rewatch recently. And I’ve got to say that “Predators” and “The Predator” (the recent Shane Black one) were actually much better than I thought they’d be. Solid 3/5 outings.
Very much looking forward to Prey!

Blimey... Brave man! The recent one is probably one of the most hated films on this forum.

Predators is alright though.
They did the same thing that they did with Alien where the sequels all feel like they’re treading water. For Alien, why not have it where it reaches earth and starts to take over or something.
For predator they must do more than spend their time hunting random people on planets.

Blew a load when I learned there’s a new film coming out from In Bruges team of Martin McDonagh, Colin Farrel and Brendan Gleeson.
The Banshees of Inisherin comes out in the states in October.
In Bruges has rare accolade of being a permanent member of my top five movies of all time. So rather excited for this but also worried because, ya know, Seven Psychopaths was pish

There have been a few good reviews for Prey so far, makes me kinda excited actually. I skipped The Predator after seeing the reception, and Predators was pretty meh (amazing Bluray transfer for the time, but a good half of the film sucked). Might have to give this new one a look. I don't suppose it will ever leave Hulu though...
