Hope it's ok to start a general movie news thread.
In what is looking like a continuing and rosy partnership with Paramount, Sega have announced that there is a third Sonic movie in development as well as a Sonic TV series for Paramount+.

There's a new TV series or film of Bioshock (the game) coming to Netflix.

I can't believe Disney approved that. I'm down. That said, the combination of realistic CG and rotoscope-style CG is kind of jarring.

That looks better than I could have expected. I think the different styles jarring is deliberate.
I’m disappointed there’s no Chris Pratt.

Oh he's taking the piss here with LA being better than New York. But yes I'd love a proper sequel to The Thing. Problem is it'd be proper shite, much like the www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/john-carpenter-halloween-escape-from-l-a-sequel-to-the-thing-1235096463/“I would like to do a sequel to The Thing, or a continuation, something like that,” Carpenter told THR. “But I don’t know. See, there are a lot of things in this world I don’t know.” Don’t do it. In the past, you’ve said you feel it is superior to Escape From New York. Still accurate? "Sure, in some ways. Escape From New York had Donald Pleasence as the president of the United States, which to me was great. But Escape From L.A. has Peter Fonda and Kurt Russell surfing. Doesn’t get much better than that."

He got paid a fucktonne more to do LA, which is why I imagine he has fond memories of it.
LA does have a genuinely better ending though.

Rob Bottin wanted to do a sequel to the Thing for years and had some crazy ideas for it, he's long retired now so...
The scripts for the aborted Frank Darabont TV series are online and they're okay. The Dark Horse comics which carried on directly from the end of the film weren't bad but were kind of pointless. The art was great though.

I've never seen Bullitt but the thought of him making a 60s/70s style action caper is very exciting.

I bought a couple of new 4K blu rays today so I was wondering what new 4K releases were out soon and I found this page: ultrahd.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.htmlSome exciting releases out soon. 12 Monkeys, The Godfather Trilogy, RoboCop, Highlander, The Usual Suspects, and more. No signs of The Abyss and Aliens, Cameron really needs to get his arse in gear.

Isn't there no regular Blu-ray version of the abyss? Sounds like the 4K version is finally in the works at least.

No there isn't. Yeah Cameron has been rumoured to be working on a remaster of Abyss but the rumours have been around forever, plus it's known he's been busy on Avatar 2 recently.
Probably under huge pressure to 4K remaster Aliens too, but yeah there isn't even a HD version of The Abyss. It's a big job because there are so many special effects that for whatever reason he doesn't feel would stack up by today's standards.

LA does have a genuinely better ending though. Its one of my favourite endings of any movie. It goes a long way to redeeming the previous 90 minutes.

unrealkilla - there's definitely a HD transfer of it already (it's on prime), but for whatever reason that never made it to a physical release. Ditto for True Lies.

That's fucking awesome news, but we'll have to see. The Abyss 4K is one of those things where I'll believe it once it gets here type of thing.

I don't think they will though as T2 got "cleaned up" for the 3D release in cinemas which I don't think this film will get.

The second T2 transfer they did for the 3D and 4K release is a phenomenal picture. If they did that for The Abyss I would be ecstatic.

There have been two separate releases of T2 on 4K disc. Both use the same DNRed 4K master as their base, which was either noise reduced because it was prepared for the 3D cinema release and 3D don't like grain, or it's how Cameron wants it to look now.
Either way, it looks bad and barely better (in some cases worse) than some of the old Blu-ray transfers.
I doubt we'll ever get a physical release of True Lies. There's a Spanish bootleg of the DVHS release on Blu-ray that's serviceable.

Right you are. Huh. To my eyes the new 4K disc looks fantastic, especially as previously the best version available was the Skynet edition blu ray which was absolute shit.
Plus the 3D effect looked amazing in the cinema and at home.
I couldn't get over how you could clearly read the policeman's name badge "Austin" on the T-1000.
But to be honest, I'm not a fan of film grain at all, so maybe that's it.

Yeah. T2 is considered probably the worst ever 4K transfer. Well, until Pirates of the Caribbean came out not too long ago.
I hate the DNR when they overdo it. It took them a number of attempts but the last transfer they did for Predator was perfect imo. Maybe they’ll do another transfer for T2 but I doubt it.

I'm terrified what Cameron will do to Aliens in 4K. That Lowry restoration is ancient (though at the time it was a revelation as Aliens has always looked like shit on home video).
It was DNRed to fuck and then digitally regrained. It'll look like hot trash in 4K.
