So no-one told me that a Japanese samurai-movie remake of Unforgiven exists and has existed since 2013, and apparently it's good/great even? Avatar succeeded on the strength of its visuals. And I'm sure the new ones will be similarly pretty. But basically every big budget movie has great graphics these days, so I don't know what Cameron could do to really blow me away. Maybe write a memorable story. Why bother with a memorable story? Marvel rarely does and makes billions. I couldn't tell you the plot of Infinity War if you put a gun to my head, and even if I tried there'd definitely be bits of Age of Ultron and/or Endgame in there (though I can actually remember Age of Ultron way better than Infinity War). Transformers never did and also made billions. Also, I don't actually agree that every big budget movie has great graphics. A lot of them are kind of mediocre or sorta-bad. Shang-Chi was absolutely "sorta bad", graphics-wise, for example. Eternals was beautifully shot but had kind "meh" SFX and absolutely godawful enemy bad guy design. Endgame looked plastic-y/fake at times. The only Marvel movie I can think of which even came close to Avatar-level graphics for its era is, weirdly, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which has an amazing look - both unique and somehow convincing. If Avatar 2's graphics are as above-par now as they were then, it'll be able to coast on that. I watched the 2009 original recently and it's still better than some modern stuff FX-wise (just not all modern stuff). 13 years later. |

I mean, it's probably possible to have both great visuals, and memorable stories/characters/dialogue.
James Cameron can do both! It's why I think people can name multiple characters from, say, Aliens or Terminator. Or famous lines or scenes from Titanic.
But Avatar? Uhhhh... Sully? The angry general man?

They really need to get help. That's a promising career essentially ruined now.
Curious to see what it means for the film, as Warner clearly want to distance themselves from them now. There's talk of it just coming out without any fanfare/no cinema release.

I just bought Atomic Blonde, Apollo 13 and A Simple Favour in the 3 for £30, and The Thing in the horror sale. Only £1.99 delivery. I don't know if many of you have seen A Simple Favour, but it is one of the best films of recent years. It looks like a chick flick, but it's got so many twists and turns. |

My bold prediction is that it will just do 'ok'. "The teaser for Avatar: The Way of Water finished its first 24-hour online window with 148.6 million views, according to Disney. This beats all recent StarWars films, and puts it second overall for most views within the first day of launch". From THR. $2 Billion+...easy! I've still not seen the trailer. Off to see Dr. Strange 2 win 3D IMAX tomorrow so will get the full "experience" then. |
