96% after 70 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes so far...
Still tempering my expectations because I'm pessimistic to the core, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little excited to give Prey a run through on Disney+ come Friday night.

Darn it, now I'm excited. TBH I'm rather surprised it's good, as it sounds like the basic setup is sticking pretty close to predator 1, and they've tried that before with limited success. But if it works, that's great. Side note: Native Americans get the coolest names! Other side note: I'm sure I've heard Dan Trachtenberg's name a bunch, so I'm surprised to find out that the only other actual movie he's made is 10 Cloverfield Lane! (divisive movie, but I loved it) I came across an article on a theretical Terminator 7, and frankly I think they should leave it for a very long time. But then something like this happens and maybe another attempt at a Terminator movie might luck out after all. Not to say that this being good guarantees it'll make a big profit.

The problem with Terminator is that you constantly have to invent new reasons for Judgement Day and time travel stuff, and it ends up being stupidly convoluted and gimmicky.
They could do another future war film though, just make sure that it isn't utterly fucking shit this time.

Yeah, they also can't really fix the problem by rebooting it, because rebooting it a dozen times is one of the main things that caused the problem. Whereas Predator (2 largely aside) has just kept remaking the first movie with different people, largely stand alone, until maybe they've finally got it right. Whereas terminator they tried to link them together (2, 3, 4) and then reboot (5, 6), even though they were essentially remaking the same movie (except 4). But I think it's beating a dead horse at this point. They need to let it lie for a decade or so, and then come back with a fresh take on the basic idea, but with a new set of characters. I always wanted a future war version, and Salvation(4) seemed to be just what I wanted. It's a shame it didn't really hang together. I liked the poster though. It had little flickering red lights for fires in my cinema.

Given my thoughts on The Predator are unpopular, how about this; Terminator Dark Fate was a great film and deserved to do much better than it did.
Excited for Prey, though! Glad it’s not just a retread of the original.

Great is pushing it, but I thought it was a good film and I wish it had done better than it did because I'd like to have seen more of those characters (particularly Grace) and seen where they went with it. If it was purely up to me, Terminator 7 would be a continuation of Dark Fate, which was originally planned to be a trilogy. I doubt that'll happen though.
I feel like it could be one of those films like Dredd that do well on streaming because they get decent word of mouth.

Or they should’ve just stopped.

I can't wait for the Terminator after the inevitable next one, where Arnie's shooting everyone from a wheelchair.
And then at the end that T800 dies after rolling off a cliff and the Connors rebuild him from all the broken bits and now he's The Rock.

Watched the first two episodes of Light and Magic and I can't recommend it enough; great interviews coupled with the ILM early days footage.

I don't suppose Prey will launch on Prime Video or at least in theaters...? Might have to make a month subscription to Disney+ to watch it.

Don't they do a 7 day free trial?

Don't they do a 7 day free trial? Can't find it anywhere on the site. Guess they don't need it anymore, now that Disney+ has tons of subscribers.

I'm really not getting my hopes up for Prey, or buying into the early reviews which are nearly always overly-forgiving, presumably to create industry hype.
I do love Predator though, so I'll probably give it a watch tomorrow night on D+ unless I go out drinking.

Empire are fairly reasonable about this sort of stuff and they gave it 4/5 - a very good sign.

The problem with Terminator is that you constantly have to invent new reasons for Judgement Day and time travel stuff, and it ends up being stupidly convoluted and gimmicky. That’s kind of almost, nearly, but not quite where dark fate succeeded. You take the ‘Judgement Day is inevitable’ premise and add a multiverse ‘anyone can be Jon Connor’ element which means you are free to do literally anything and reinterpret how you like. Every movie can be it’s own stand alone thing if it wants or spawn a small trilogy or something. But then they rope Arnie and Hamilton back in and here we are.

Or they should’ve just stopped. Yeah this. T3 wasn't needed although I will die on the hill that the ending of t3 was brilliant. They tried this with salvation and fucked it right up. All we needed was T1 T2 Then a "prequel" set in the future with it ending at Reese/arnie being sent back in time creating an infinite loop. Then just leave fans to bicker on reddit about how John was born in the First time line. Fin

Well, they tried that last part with T4 and, for some fuckheaded reason, made Sam Worthington the main character.

Yeah T3 is pretty poor in comparison to what came before it but what elevates it is the ending. The action was decent as well actually and although the crane chase scene was basically a reprise of the truck chase from T2, it was pretty bloody good. Salvation and Genisys are both perfectly servicable. Both were massive disappointments when I saw them originally but subsequent viewings have found me really enjoying them. Salvation is far too po faced for it's own good, but it's got it's own thing going on. Genisys is just incredibly silly, but surprisingly engaging. I like Dark Fate as well. Terminator, as a franchise, with all it's false starts and soft reboots - it's all over the place, yet I'll maintain that out of all the big 80's franchises, it has the highest ratio of decent stuff to shit stuff compared to the rest. I'd happily watch any of them if they came on t'telly.
Also, I feel the need to plug the rather splended Terminator: Resistance game as well. Which is great.

I really liked the ending of T3, although some of the stuff that came before was a bit naff. It didn't really have a big enough budget, but it wasn't bad... except the casting.
I maintain that the thing that's screwed most of the later Terminator movies has been the casting.
T3's casting of John Connor was waaaay off, and Clare Danes was only so-so. T4's casting of both the male leads just didn't really work. I thought Bale was a good idea, but... Genisys's casting was just all NOPE. Plus they got John wrong AGAIN! Dark Fate's casting was pretty good, with the weakest points actually being the 2 returning oldies.
I kinda get what they were trying to do with T4/Salvation, but they really needed it to focus more on Connor, maybe starting with the camps and him forming the resistance.
Sarah Connors Chronicles had to do *another* soft reboot, but that was only really to align the dates with now, and push judgement day back a bit. Other than that, I kinda liked its ideas of (a) there being a bunch of terminators that were sent back, and them being left about the place ready to be activated, and (b) the war within the machines, wherever that was going.

I'm one of the rare people that don't hate Sam Worthington, but yes. I agree. The casting is one of the main issues.

"hate" is a strong word. He's not offensively bad or anything, he's just kind of... there.

He's in a western. With a beard. Beards increase acting prowess by 200%. That's a fact. There's no actual evidence, but it's a fact.
