This might just be me, but I actually want awards shows like this to promote and focus on and increase the visibility of things that might be difficult, or have less popular appeal. Because, again, popular movies have enough going for them (making shitloads of money), I don't see why they need to win awards too.

No nod for Mutant Mayhem is a travesty.

Yeah, I would have picked that over Elemental.

Looking at the top box office for 2023 quite a few of the top 20 are nominated for something and it’s very obvious why the others aren’t. It’s not that different for 2022. For 2023 the only two films in the top 20 that aren’t sequels, remakes or part of some other multi film franchise, are Oppenheimer and Barbie. One is a very serious drama and the other is Barbie. In 2022 Elvis is the only one. The top 20 is filled with stuff that’s never going to get an Oscar - what makes money has changed, I’m not sure the Oscar’s has. Based on what’s popular I’m not sure they should unless Fast XV should be in with a chance of one. Very good point about what does well at the box office changing. The kind of films that do well at the Oscars aren't always those which are 'must see at the cinema', especially in a world where many people have a decent home entertainment setup and streaming services offering films very shortly after theatrical release. A quick look at the highest-grossing films over the last five years doesn't exactly reveal a litany of artistic excellence, it's a lot of franchise sequels. And if you look a bit deeper many of the 'better' films in these lists were nominated for artistic awards: Top Gun, Tenet, Joker, Dune, Avatar 2, Elvis, Bohemian Rhapsody, Black Panther and A Star is Born all received Best Picture nominations, for example.

The mistake many people make is equating commercial success with quality.
Is Love Island commercially successful? Yes. Is it a quality product? No.
People increasingly don't seem able to separate the business from the art, and believe they're one and the same.
The Oscars has never been about rewarding commercial success, and the nominations seem fair to me.

Because, again, popular movies have enough going for them (making shitloads of money), I don't see why they need to win awards too. I think this is a fair point. I just get a bee in my bonnet sometimes about the way genre fiction especially is looked down upon. How many horror films have won Best Picture? How many sci-fi films? I struggle to see how anyone with a knowledge of filmmaking cannot give the Best Director Oscar to George Miller for Fury Road. You know? And the gap has been SO wide between broadly popular, largely fantastical money-making films and the sorts of films that do the awards circuit that it's no wonder hardly anyone watches awards ceremonies anymore. But this is a bad year to be having this argument because the popular films ARE the ones nominated, and they are - more or less - the best films of the year too. Hopefully this is a sign that we might get a bit more correlation in future - and also that maybe we might get more big successes like Oppenheimer. As much as I'm a massive MCU stan, I'd love to see quality dramas and comedies in the box office top ten of the year.

TRON 3 has started filming, and Gillian Anderson has joined the cast.

I kind enjoyed Tron Legacy but a large part of that was the Daft Punk score.
Without that element, and with the addition of Leto, I'm not sure this appeals as much.

It's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It has the depth of a puddle, but looks and sounds so fantastic that you end up not really giving a shit. I'm definitely on board for a sequel.
Jared Leto, though? Ugh!

Some pretty weird films have had best director Oscar or been nominated in recent years. Guillermo Del Toro won director for his fish person film, George Miller was nominated and lost to the Revenant (which I can understand why in that case), Alfonso Cuaron won for Gravity.
Perception that only obscure art films or unpopular films/directors win isn’t the case if you look at the history. They occasionally get it very wrong but it’s not that often.

Wondered when we were going to hear any news about this since Duncan Jones announced it a loooooong time ago and now some actual details! Rogue Trooper has finished shooting (presumably performance capture as it's using Unreal 5) and is due out next year.
From the teaser image it is the original Rogue rather than Friday too, I guess if it's animated having someone with his abs out all time time doesn't matter too much. Plus Friday isn't as good a character either.
Looking forward to seeing the Quartz Zone Massacre on the big screen!

What a cast list. Matt Berry and Diane Morgan alongside Sean Bean, Hayley Atwell, and him off Slow Horses.

The Weirdest thing about that is the list of stuff people have been in. E.g. the American version. Sean Bean I'm going straight for Sharpe, Alice Lowe and Matt Berry, Darkplace etc.

I've just had the most insane mental image of them bringing back Bowie's character as a muppet with an impressionist doing the voice.

Yeah right. It’s actually because Dick van Dyke refused to have his name taken off the credits.
