So BlackBerry, the one with Glenn Howerton as one of the founders of the phone company:
Apparently there is also "an extended, serialized version aired as a three part miniseries" that aired on streaming services with additional footage.

I suppose it wasn't a full plane (IIRC), but yeah even so it still feels a bit too soon for that kind of imagery. I can't imagine that bit coming across intact.
Isn't the long walk getting an adaptation too? I used to love the Bachman books.

Some initial impressions of the new 4K Cameron releases over at Hi-Def DigestSeems there is some DNR being applied but, at least for Abyss and Aliens, not too much to be a real issue and there is more fine detail overall. The Atmos soundtracks apparently are exceedingly good. Potentially the physical releases will have a little more grain (grain and streaming are not friends), but I'm not expecting much difference.

But is it noticeable when watching and if it is, is it worse when watching or just not what someone who’s seen the film many times is used to?

Apparently True Lies is a disaster, too. Everyone looks like they are made out of plasticine and the AI enhances the whites in peoples eyes so much they look like this

But is it noticeable when watching and if it is, is it worse when watching or just not what someone who’s seen the film many times is used to? If its like other AI remasters/upscales, if you had never seen the movie or a movie shot on film before, you wouldnt notice or you would quickly forget. But the point is that these are beloved films that are being made shitter by the misuse of technology. If you are going to make them worse A) whats the point and B) why would anyone buy them? Buffy is pretty much the go-to example. Look at how boring and shit the AI remaster is. Everything looks washed out and flat. It just drains all the character

That Buffy one is weird. I get they’ve made it all widescreen and that causes one lot of issues with framing and cutting things off (which they shouldn’t have done) but the colour changing throughout seems to just be a change to the original for the sake of it.

According to the Hi Def Digest post they've taken some of the colour grading from Aliens too, vs the BD release.
That Buffy comparison, if I didn't see them side-by-side, I wouldn't question it at all. The new colour grading looks more natural. Only thing that looks outright worse is the framing but, again, without the comparison I wouldn't think about it. The YT compression probably helps, as even the remaster doesn't look new.

The theory seems to be that cameron doesnt like film grain so in an effort to purge it from the movies everything gets kind of fucked up because its so pervasive. Everything looks like its set in the matrix now, its so grim.

The faces have all the life smoothed out of them and it loses a lot of detail. I dont think the colour grading looks particularly realistic but, even if it did, there is the old adage that art should look artistic not realistic.

I really can't stand fucking around and removing grain, it rarely works out, and grain is a natural part of the process. It's like taking a painting and digitally altering it to look more real (sort of).

The grain doesn't bother me too much but the way the colours are washed out does, it's like somebody has been fucking with the saturation on the TV remote.
Also don't think it's particularly naturalistic, it just looks faded. My eyesight isn't great but colours look more vivid than that.
(Colourwise it makes me think of games circa the '10s, all muted greys and browns because it was supposedly more realistic)

I might not be smashing any looms yet but if I’m renting films from Prime or wherever I’ll usually go SD over HD and above because I like the grain and fuzziness and films looking like how I remember.
I don’t want Aliens or Abyss or True Lies even to be given that stagey Neighbours/local news ‘too real’ fake looking feel or have them mangled into the uncanny valley just because James Cameron wants to be a low key George Lucas and tamper away.

Is it wrong that I’m very interested in watching this film? I’m strongly of the opinion that DotD is his only good film but I can’t help coming back to rubberneck at whatever he does next.

I'm a bit torn about Snyder. I don't think he's a good director, or that he makes good films. But it feels like there's less space these days for making huge, big budget things that aren't already part of massive franchise names... at least if your name isn't Christopher Nolan. Snyder also has this enthusiastic, "what if a golden retriever/Ken doll made a movie" himbo energy that I find weirdly endearing.
So I kind of want him to keep making his shitty movies, and further hope that other directors will be given money to make better ones.

As a director I like a lot of what he does. Can film a great shot but loves slow mo way too much. He just shouldn't have that much story input.

It’s always struck me as interesting how much more attractive film is when there is greater “artifice” to it. Obviously film grain is the subject here, but it’s the same when the frame rate goes up from 24fps (see The Hobbit and shitty frame interpolation modes); it looks more “real” and actually less believable.
I wonder if it’s because we need that kind of barrier of artificiality to more easily suspend our disbelief..?

I was really hyped for that Owl film he did, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. It was shit though.
So weird that he had the Dawn of The Dead, 300, Watchmen run and traded all that clout to make a weird Australian animated owl fantasy.
