Well now we've got a video game voice actor strike. That should be interesting.

Honestly, I think the need for full voice acting has made games worse. Particularly RPGs. But I still support the strike, the demands seem pretty reasonable to me.

What makes you think they're worse now? Let's just take RPGs as an example. For me, RPGs live and die on the strength of their writing. Often, that means having *more* writing, to flesh out characters and plot details, to have multiple solutions for quests that take into account all your actions, etc etc. When you add an expectation that all lines be voiced by a professional voice actor, though, more writing translates into more expense. Like, *vastly* more expense. Every line you add increases the cost. So unless studios have a shitload of money to play around with, they respond to the need for voice acting by... writing less. And to me, that is not good for an RPG. Which of course doesn't mean that voice actors shouldn't get full compensation for the work they do! I just don't think every game needs voice acting.

I agree that not every game needs voice acting to make it work but I really feel that RPG's really benefit with full voice acting, I don't think the player character has to be voiced but I do believe the impact and the act of becoming absorbed into the world the developers have made is greatly amplified by having voice actors. It's akin to cooking a meal without any seasoning, sure you can do it but you can always tell you're missing something: flavour. That's what voice acting brings and I agree that voice actors should be paid a fee that represents the value they bring to the games they are in. I understand the point you've made about expense but I don't think we can put the genie back in the bottle.

Yeah I dunno, I don't think RPGs have really benefited from it that much.
Even discounting the "more voice acting = less writing" thing, there's also a strong element of "you can write this shit George, but you can't say it". It can really take me out of something when a stupid line gets said out aloud.
Just give me a sense of what the characters sound like, then I can imagine them saying the rest of the lines. That's what, say, Planescape Torment did, and people still rightly call that one of the best RPGs ever made.

I would have to strongly disagree there, I don't think Witcher 3 would be as popular as it is without the voice acting. To say that voice acting doesn't make a difference is almost insulting to the voice actors out there who can really make characters iconic and come alive.

I think it’s a nice option to have but the quality of acting has to be very good and the script has to be very good along with the story. There aren’t many games that achieve any of those let alone all three.
More voice acting doesn’t necessarily mean less writing though, take Disco Elysium as an example.

Who's going to see Killers of the Flower Moon at the cinema? They've got IMAX screenings at the Trafford Centre. Very tempted to go.

Might be my next trip to an Everyman. Seems the perfect film for it.

Who's going to see Killers of the Flower Moon at the cinema? They've got IMAX screenings at the Trafford Centre. Very tempted to go. At 3.5 hours long, not me. Trailers and hype make it look like something I'd want to see, but the runtime has put me off.
I'll wait until it's streaming somewhere and watch it in 2 or 3 parts.

Yeah really want to see it but runtime eats up half the day. It’ll be on Apple pretty soon.

Didn't realise it was that long. Had to take a day's leave to watch The Irishman!

Speculation that Warner Bros may be sold off, possibly to Universal.

Universal could change who’s in charge of the DC.
I can see all the Snyder fans hoping they bring him back.

If we're going to have more consolidation then I insist it's only from companies who I already pay money to.
So Amazon can buy WB, coz I've already got Prime Video.

Loved the first but really doesn't need a sequel.
