'The Temporal Cold War' is genuinely the worst storyline of any Star Trek series or movie. I absolutely fucking hate those first two seasons. Maybe more than even the first two of voyager.

I enjoyed Enterprise for the most part (although still the weakest Star Trek of the ones I've watched), but I too hate the Temporal War nonsense.

Squid game 9/10 Tremendous stuff, watched the full 9 episodes in two days, I don’t do that very often. I would have preferred the Social commentary to be a bit heavier as the reason behind it all isn’t as hard hitting as I hoped and a bit Predictable. But they are small minus points in an otherwise great show.
Do not watch it dubbed...

Agree the Temporal Cold War is the worst part of this. I’m six into season 2 now (joy of working from home again) and its really finding its feet. Stuff like Dead Stop is a nice return to exploring space mysteries and encountering strange new things. Hoping for more standalone adventures like that.

The Leftovers S2. 8/10. Weird but wonderful. Took a while to engage me, and there's the odd duff episode but overall, cracking stuff. Looking forward to seeing how it wraps up.

Squid Game Pretty good! It got less good in later episodes, and I didn't really like the ending. And there were plot threads left dangling that felt less like "oh we need this for sequel bait", more like they just forgot. "Oh wait, did we give the Pakistani guy and his family any closure? No? Oh ok who cares". And other nitpicky things that I can't really talk about without spoilering a whole post. But yeah, it was never less than good. And the early episodes were great enough to carry it through. So 7/10 seems about right. The director said that there weren't plans for a season 2, but this has been popular enough that I can't imagine it not happening. I'll be watching it for sure.

Midnight Mass 6/10
As a two hour film, or three hour episodic, it'd be a really solid 7/10. Predictable familiar plot, threads of which you'll recognise from any number of light horror flicks. Really well acted and shot.
But it does that thing so common on Netflix of stretching a two hour story out to eight (or was it seven, seven or eight, can't remember) and I've really no patience for that any more. Defenders would call it adding to suspense, or allowing more fully rounded characters, but with such a familiar plot that suspense just seemed redundant.
It's not bad, I've been entertained for eight hours. It's good. But I do begrudge the time. It's a perfectly good two hour film that demands eight hours of your time.

Alma is not normal (BBC iplayer) really enjoyed it, Sophie Willan wrote and stars, she is great in it, reminds me so much of Diane Morgan and it is not just the accent. Bonus point for have Jerry the saint Sinclair in a couple of episodes
The Cleaner (BBC iplayer) Greg Davies new comedy, good but not Man Down greatness. Fav episode was with David Mitchell "

Yeah, it’s very Salem’s Lot with added wangst. It’s even got a King-esque religious psycho. I haven’t finished it yet but if you only watch one show with two people sitting opposite each other, talking very dryly at each other non-stop, make it this one. Once you notice *every* scene is like that, it’s hard to unnotice.

The Squid Game
9/10 despite feeling like I was watching a subliminal advert for PlayStation throughout.

I agree with the above points - would have gone into more detail if I knew how to add spoiler tags here - but would still give it 9/10 as it's so well shot and engrossing throughout. And unlike many other Netflix shows, it didn't feel overlong either.

Obviously I'm a big manly man and not a scaredy cat, but speaking purely hypothetically, you understand, how suitable is Squid Game for hypothetical scaredy cats who are definitely not me?
Synopses I've seen suggest it leans toward Saw or Hannibal territory? I'm fine with gore, ok with jump scares, but absolutely cannot cope with torture porn - making characters or animals helpless to resist wanton torture or death, cruelty for the sake of cruelty. (Midnight Mass no problem at all, dont' think I got more than 10 minutes into Saw)

No torture porn or anything horrifically violent or graphic. They like their CGI blood splats when people get shot or fall to their deaths but its not 'lets play a game' saw-style its 'lets play a game of tiddlywinks and the loser gets shot in the forehead'.
That said, I am so desensitised to violence that my wife genuinely worries for me, so maybe Im not the best person to judge.

It's more emotional torture porn than anything else. So yeah, you should be fine I reckon.

Rome (S1)
Some of the finest TV ever made. A great cast and characters (although Pullo is my favourite), and it blends the different levels of society and their machinations superbly. No big battles, but there's some decent scraps, and it has a gritty feeling that feels right for story.
10/10
Rick and Morty (S3)
Still enjoying and do find it mostly quite funny, but there's a noticeable quality variation in the episodes. To be fair, none of them have been so bad I regretted watching them. Excellent fun.
8/10

Ooh. I have a dvd of Rome Season 1 sitting around that I've owned for over 10 years and never watched. I kinda assumed it'd been superseded by later shows.
Then again... I also have a dvd of season 1 of Breaking Bad sitting around...

Squid Game: 9/10. Thoroughly enjoyed. Thought the lead was a knob as a character at the start then warmed to him. Ep6 was a highlight. The ending certainly sets up a sequel - not sure why the director felt there was not going to be one.

Iirc it was more that the Squid Game director was really fucking tried from writing and directing all the episodes himself. ie. "maybe I can do a season 2, but I'm going to need other people to help"
I imagine he will get that help, it's been a pretty big hit so far.

Do Korean tv shows often get multiple seasons? I was under the vague impression that, similar to Japanese tv shows, they tended to be one and done. Not that I know anything about them. And if it was a big hit, I'm sure Netflix will want a second series. (Then cancel it)

Well, maybe it's different with Netflix involved. But Kingdom (also on Netflix) has gotten 2, with a third apparently on the way.

Dexter: Season 4. Excellent. I'm now moving into the territory you lot are telling me is pants! we shall see. Episode 1 of 5 was fine.

Speaking of dips in quality, Downton Abbey S1-3 have been thoroughly enjoyable but two episodes into season 4 and the quality of the writing has taken a noticeable dive. Wife and I both blurted out "This is fucking stupid!" at precisely the same time during last night's viewing.

Generally it's one and done but the more popular ones often get a second and sometimes a third (let's eat for example).

Dexter: Season 4. Excellent. I'm now moving into the territory you lot are telling me is pants! we shall see. Episode 1 of 5 was fine. I don't know about anyone else but I found it very hard to move past his missus being murdered. It was so brutal and visceral and properly shocking - just didn't really want to watch any more. I got about halfway through S5 but just didn't care. I have heard that it declines quite rapidly after S5
