Speaking of dips in quality, Downton Abbey S1-3 have been thoroughly enjoyable but two episodes into season 4 and the quality of the writing has taken a noticeable dive. Wife and I both blurted out "This is fucking stupid!" at precisely the same time during last night's viewing. Yeah think I gave up on that at a similar point too. |

Dexter: Season 4. Excellent. I'm now moving into the territory you lot are telling me is pants! we shall see. Episode 1 of 5 was fine. I don't know about anyone else but I found it very hard to move past his missus being murdered. It was so brutal and visceral and properly shocking - just didn't really want to watch any more. I got about halfway through S5 but just didn't care. I have heard that it declines quite rapidly after S5 The seasons after 4 are OK but it completely jumps the shark when they make Debs fall in love with Dexter and that she's always been in love with him. It was an idiotic decision. The last 2 seasons are truly awful quality wise too. |

Midnight Mass - A really hard one to judge. As a big Stephen King fan this, for me, crossed over the 'homage' line and into this is just Salems Lot with more talking. Theres even the hyper-religious ticking timebomb. But outside of that... its ok? I dunno. Its so talky. Literally 80% of it is shot/reverse shot of two people talking to each other for five minutes at a time. Then two other people talk to each other. Then two other people. Then jump scare/plot twist and credits. And the plot runs on stupid and hinges on everyone being as dumb as possible at all times. But that may well just be a clever commentary on religion, so a pass for that one I suppose. But I watched it almost compulsively (while on my phone during the likes of the 'what happens when you die' monologues). It does a superb (if slightly dishonest) fakeout and everything escalates nicely until everything explodes at the end, so it did pull me along, albeit with me dipping in and out of some of the more tedious scenes. And it looks and sounds superb Like I say, its hard to rate. Its not as good as hill house (but does suffer that same early 'boooooooooring' dip) but is better than Bly house. 6/10 (maybe a seven if you dig meditations on what it is to believe in god) |

Enterprise season 2 (netflix)
The show really grows legs in this season, the episodes have a quicker pace, the characters all show more personality, the production design feels fuller and more colourful, the plots more Treky and the Temporal Cold War stuff is massively reduced in prominence.
Still some issues of it being notably dated in places and its not a great place to be a female character but its a much livelier show. Took me three days to do the whole thing so I’m obviously enjoying it.

Squid game 9/10 Tremendous stuff, watched the full 9 episodes in two days, I don’t do that very often. I would have preferred the Social commentary to be a bit heavier as the reason behind it all isn’t as hard hitting as I hoped and a bit Predictable. But they are small minus points in an otherwise great show. Do not watch it dubbed... Is that just snobbery? I head the dub was pretty good. |

I am definitely a fanny when it's comes to dubbing and almost refuse to watch anything other than the original. But then I am less likely to watch it as I'm always tired and lazy so...

I generally prefer the dub as I prefer to look at more than 8% of the screen when I'm watching something.

The main problem with dubs is that there only seem to be eight english voice actors available for the entirety of the foreign language entertainment industry.

Have to admit I have an aversion to dubs but do find when I'm tired I end up watching something else instead. Two episodes in on Squid Game after the recommendations here though and enjoying it so far!

Dubs are always shit, in every language.
I'm always amazed at how bad they are, you walk into a room and can hear immediately if it's a dub.
Doesn't matter the language, always shit, oh look, a Samurai warlord with a wooden cockney accent, how immersive.
I've no idea why when there are amazing voice actors, just look at gaming (sometimes) nowadays.

I watch pretty much all TV with subtitles on these days - just got used to them when my son was young.
Do get some weird ones, like Rosemary's Baby opening with "(OMINOUS MUSIC)"

Dubs are always shit, in every language. I also used to be very anti-dub. Subs all the way. But I realised that nobody was actually impressed by that so I started watching things how I wanted rather than pretending one was actually any better than the other. |

I do prefer subtitles but there’s nothing wrong with dubs, especially when done well. With subtitles you miss a lot of the show just from reading through it all, usually ahead of where the actors are.
Try them on an English show and you’ll find how much you miss of the actual program.
