I'm fine with dubs in animated stuff. I don't normally watch them with dubs, but if someone else is around I don't mind it.
But it feels more wrong to have them in live action, and I'm not 100% sure why that is. I think it just looks weird, though in a few cases (see: 70s martial arts movies) dubs add to the schlocky fun.

Yeah, it definitely works for comedy. The problem I guess is when dubs are used for things that are not comedies.

Dubs are always shit, in every language. I also used to be very anti-dub. Subs all the way. But I realised that nobody was actually impressed by that so I started watching things how I wanted rather than pretending one was actually any better than the other. Preference (and pretentiousness) is one thing but having all original actors speaking in their own voices is objectively better than having (almost always) bad actors speaking over them, you lose atmosphere and emotion with the additional distraction of voices not being synced with their lip movements. Of course, subtitles may be unsuitable for people with eyesight problems or very slow readers but thankfully despite being an idiot in most ways, I'm a fast reader. Here in Switzerland, when you go to the cinema to see a non-Swiss language film, e.g. in English you get subtitles in both French and German simultaneously which first time was a bit weird but becomes normal quickly and is a good opportunity to pick up unusual words or phrases.

Dubs are alright if you watch the scene in a show/film instead of staring at everybodies mouth. Staring at mouths and all you do is mentally note every time where it doesn't line up and internally argue with yourself about it.
Animations don't accurately animate every word in each sentence and they work ok but that could also be the voice artist that is selling the performance.

Do Korean tv shows often get multiple seasons? I was under the vague impression that, similar to Japanese tv shows, they tended to be one and done. Not that I know anything about them. And if it was a big hit, I'm sure Netflix will want a second series. (Then cancel it) My Mrs watches loads of them. Generally it's one and done but the more popular ones often get a second and sometimes a third (let's eat for example). Just finished Ep6, HooBoy, I'm not crying you are. Still think I know who is behind it despite that ep, hope it does not completely shit the bed from here on in, but am not optimistic TBH. Such a good show up to this point. Fuck.

Having the correct actors voices is ‘objectively better’ but being able to watch the movie/show fully unfold without your eyes constantly darting back and forth is also ‘objectively better’ than reading. If you talk about directors intent, I don’t think anyone intends things to be watched with subs.
I’m also a quick reader, my brain does that recognising words thing rather than actually reading them, but I do prefer dubs for most things. I wouldn’t necessarily watch parasite dubbed but squid game isn’t winning any oscars

Dubs always take something away from what i am watching TBH. Not sure if it's in the asian character or if its the acting style but asian actors can be VERY dramatic to my eyes and pairing a English dub to it takes me out of it.
Saying that though even Ghibli stuff I would rather watch with Subs, just my preference, you do you.

My nephew wanted to watch a Ghibli movie with dubs. And I refused him, the fucking Philistine.
My sister doesn't let me babysit anymore, I'm not sure why.

Dubs can also knock the edges off a lot of a lot of Asian drama precisely because of that. The screaming woman in squid game is annoying on the dub but unbearable in the sub.
I’m not saying ride or die dubs, just that most often dubs are fine. Don’t miss out on something because you aren’t in the mood to read subtitles, just watch the dub ffs

The Ghibli movies are a case in point. You do get people saying ‘oh, I only watch them in their original language’ which is fine but Ghibli movies tend to be fairly westernised and their English voice cast tends to be either good or excellent. You miss out on nothing watching the dub.

I dont think anyone particularly 'likes' dubs its just that they are literally fine for the majority of content. You arent losing out on anything watching the dub of landfill anime #287.

Just going to head off something in case it gets out of control it occurs I'm a newcomer over here and haven't built up the conversational shorthand to allow people to differentiate wild extrapolation for comic effect from genuine belief So if I say "I'm far too classy for dubs" or some bullshit it's very much equivalent of eight year olds in the playground teasing the girl/boy they like. I'm basically eight years old. Of course anyone can enjoy their telly in any damn way they please, subtitles for me, if dubs work for you then that's great. I mean, you're wrong but that's ok

99% of the time people are exaggerating for comic effect. The other 1% is ecosse trying to get people to pay him attention.

YOU BETTER HAVE WATCHED IT WITH SUBTITLES YOU VILE PIG I DID YOU SLAG. BUT: Really interesting thread over on Twitter from a fluent Korean speaker on how poor the subtitles are for Squid Game. Lots of good and subtle Korean writing just blunted or lost into a join the dots English job. She is @ymmayer. She’s talking about putting some more on TikTok if there’s enough interest, but seems Netflix aren’t doing Korean and Asian media any favours whatsoever. 👍
