The Expanse S2
Damn this is a good show. I'm not even that into sci-fi usually, but this isn't too heavy on the detail. There's a good mix of action and politicking, and the story never feels padded out.
And I love Amos. He's such a damn weirdo.

YOU BETTER HAVE WATCHED IT WITH SUBTITLES YOU VILE PIG I DID YOU SLAG. BUT: Really interesting thread over on Twitter from a fluent Korean speaker on how poor the subtitles are for Squid Game. Lots of good and subtle Korean writing just blunted or lost into a join the dots English job. She is @ymmayer. She’s talking about putting some more on TikTok if there’s enough interest, but seems Netflix aren’t doing Korean and Asian media any favours whatsoever. 👍 Oh, that's interesting. I thought the dialogue in the subtitles seemed fine, but I guess you will always lose some subtleties in a translation. Fwiw the dub seemed fine too from what I heard, but it's not my preferred way to watch these shows (I'm one of those weirdos that tends to leave subtitles on for everything).

You know how once you see continuity errors you can't stop seeing them? That's what dubs are like for me. When I notice the words aren't matching the lip movement it's all I can focus on.

Yeah, this is it exactly. It just looks wrong for people to be speaking in voices and languages that aren't their own, and my brain can't get around it. I'm not going to get dogmatic about it, but it's really distracting for me.

The dubs would be based on the same translation, surely? So you have a bad translation AND annoying lip syncing that takes you out of the moment instead of a just a bad translation.
Subs all the way!

I could overlook that if the voice acting asnt so bad. Everyone sounds like fucking Lion-O off the Thundercats. I'd much rather listen to incoherent Japanese wailing than that.

Dubs are alright if you watch the scene in a show/film instead of staring at everybodies mouth. Staring at mouths and all you do is mentally note every time where it doesn't line up and internally argue with yourself about it. Animations don't accurately animate every word in each sentence and they work ok but that could also be the voice artist that is selling the performance. Exactly. And you can't be looking at their mouths if you're playing with your phone at the same time.

I think it just depends on the quality of the dub (and that they tend to be poor). I think it's clever that dialogue is changed in the dubbed script to match up with the video (in anime at least).
I almost always watched subbed in anime because the voices just fit better - the dubbed voices tend to sound really exaggerated with moustache twirling villians, etc. But a good dub is great and I'd probably watch it over the dub. Gurren Lagann, FLCL and Haruhi all had great dubs. Ghibli dubs are really good too.
Don't think I could watch live action stuff with dubs though, too distracting

I thought the last season (5, I think?) of The Expanse was a seriously bad drop-off in quality, we nearly binned it half way through but soldiered on. Up to that point, though, it is absolutely excellent.

Like, objectively speaking Amos is a huge sociopath. But he's trying (and usually falling) to channel it in a way that makes him resemble other humans. The bits when the mask slips are really, really funny.

Came to post the interesting video by a fluent Korean speaker about issues with the subtitle translation in Squid Game- but it's already been covered. Instead, I'll add this, from the same thread. This one feels more like a cool Easter Egg than something that was missed by the translators (And it's something that could only come across to English speakers in the dub, NOT the subtitles!) The North Korean character, saebyeok, speaks in a North Korean accent- but only to her brother. She hides it with the others

Just finished Mare of Eastown. Absolutely brilliant. Kate Winslet is absolutely amazing and the ensemble cast are almost as good. Brilliant whodunnit and really beautifully shot, scored and acted. Right up there with Sopranos, The Wire, Chernobyl and Succession in my top 5.

Midnight Mass
Started off well, went slightly WTF in the middle, and went downhill from there.
I'd give it... StephenKingShouldSue/10

Midnight Mass (Netflix) 8.5/10
As stated above, this is probably the most Stephen King thing that Mike Flanagan has ever done. And that includes his actual King adaptations.
Anyway pretty much loved this, barring some questionable plotting in the final stretch. The setting, performances and Flanagan's typical slow-burn style really worked for me here, I actually didn't want it to end when it did.

8/10 Squid Game, Terrific, though it tailed off a little in the last few episodes, twigged who was behind it and why early on, still enjoyed the ride, some absolutely gripping TV.

Mike Flanagan's a cracking horror director and his TV shows have this stunning slow burn tempo about that I just haven't come across before for a horor TV show. Bar some areas that caused a few issues with the plot Midnight Mass was cracking series and I can't for what he and Netflix have in store next.

Mortimer & Whitehouse Gone Fishing series 4 Chris & Megan’s Wild Summer
I’m a big fan of the countryside and relaxing so these have been a perfect Sunday pairing. And obviously being about real life friends and a stepfather/daughter relationship they all have actual chemistry that the celebrity travelogue shows always try and fail to fake. Roaming The Wild on BBC Scotland has a similar vibe, if a bit rougher and more outdoorsy.
9/10

Orville season 1 7/10 It’s the most Star Trek like series for years, the humour doesn’t get in the way apart from a few times where they go for the cheap laugh.
Jack Ryan season 2 7/10 Not as good as the first season, a lot happens and yet still feels like the story is taking a long time to go anywhere. Still, explosions and shooting.

I'm questioning all my beliefs now. There's been an interesting backlash to that original thread, as apparently she was watching it with closed caption subtitles, which are subtitles for the English dub and therefore different from the normal subtitles (which are apparently much better). Never knew there was a difference between the two tbh. So yeah, it does seem that dubs are bad - not just because of the voice-acting, but also because the translation in general is a bit off (as they need to stick to fewer words to try and match the characters talking on screen).

I tried this last night as I do think it's something I'd enjoy, but couldn't last the first episode. Perhaps I was in the wrong mood, so will probably give it anpother try.

It calms down a lot after the first few episodes. I really didn’t like it at first but actually ended up getting quite into it

Its really unfortunate that both seasons of the Orville open with their weakest episodes. The first in series one probably being the overall worst episode of the entire show. Like to the point where its almost a totally different type of show - a parody rather than tribute.

Upload - season 1 On Amazon prime This does not seem to have caught on but it’s one the best feel good series’s I’ve watched in ages, up there with ted lasso and schitts creek. Set in the near future and if you die and have money you can be uploaded to a virtual world and still have virtual contact with the real world. Great story and characters you grow to care about. Hoping for a season 2 9/10
