I'm only 4 episodes in but The Morning Show is bloody excellent, didn't see that coming tbh.

I think there is going to be a S2. I liked it too - no surprise that it's by the same guy who did Parks and Rec and The Good Place.

S2 is already available. I'm two episodes in and a bit underwhelmed so far (loved S1).

The Shield S2 and S3
Well, this is pretty much the cop show I've been looking for all my life. Good mix of nonce/ murderer of the week and a wider narrative. Vic is wonderfully fleshed out with his family and children, Shane gets some stuff to do and WHAT THE FUCK ACEVEDA.
Out of all the shows I've watched, this probably has the best hit rate of "fucking hell" moments. I'd say there's a jaw dropper ever 2-3 episodes. I rate series 2 over 3 but it's settling in to a pretty good groove. Lots of curveballs.
S2 - 9/10 S3 - 8/10
Started 4 and Glenn Close just turned up, looking nothing like Glenn Close and making me uneasy. You don't get Glenn Close if you want someone nice.

I DID YOU SLAG. BUT: Really interesting thread over on Twitter from a fluent Korean speaker on how poor the subtitles are for Squid Game. Lots of good and subtle Korean writing just blunted or lost into a join the dots English job. She is @ymmayer. She’s talking about putting some more on TikTok if there’s enough interest, but seems Netflix aren’t doing Korean and Asian media any favours whatsoever. 👍 Sooooo the dub folks were right all along? I'm questioning all my beliefs now. I've got dubbed+subtitled and subtitled versions "on dvd". For the example of the girl looking for a partner in the marbles episidoe, the subtitled version says "I never bothered to study, but I'm unbelievably smart" In the dubbed version, the subtitle says "I'm not a genius but I still got it worked out" The dubbed audio says "I'm not a genius but I still got it where it counts"
Take your pick.

I was surprised by how much cultural idiom the subtitles for Squid Game kept in, there's a lot of specifically Korean references to absorb, if you're not familiar.
There's always a fine balance between keeping the original culturally specific intent and trying to translate that into English idiom. Which is why translation is such a fine art, for example, in book translations and why some authors refused to use anyone other than their favoured translators.
I'm only reasonably proficient in French, and a smattering of Italian, but even watching French films you can detect all the time when the subtitles aren't translating the French even vaguely accurately.
One of the most infamous 'dubtitlings' is The Killer, which changed all sorts including the nicknames they call each other and Les Valseuses,a Gerard Depardieu flick full of French slang which horribly, horribly Americanised everything in the subs. It's vile.

You know who had a good English language translator? Murakami
You know what game that translator worked on? Lost Odyssey

Mystic Quest Season 2 - 8/10 Not as good as the first season but still had some outstanding episodes and real laughs and heart. Perfect final episode which makes me worry for a season 3...

The two backstory episodes were the highlight imo. And yeah, interesting to see where they take it in the third season (if there is one).

One of the most infamous 'dubtitlings' is The Killer, which changed all sorts including the nicknames they call each other I don't remember if it was The Killer, I feel like it was Hardboiled, but there was definitely one Chow yun Fat movie where they confused the hell out of me because they *swapped* the names of a protagonist and the bad guy. The first time I watched it was dubbed, and then the second time was subtitled, and suddenly the bad guy had the good guy's name and it was so confusing! You know who had a good English language translator? Murakami Yeah. I always wonder how much of it is the original prose, and how much is the translator. Murakami books have this dreamlike quality to the prose, which they apparently also have in Japanese, but it must be a knightmare to translate while keeping the meaning and the style. I think the issue with dub translations is that they're much more limited in what they can say as they have to match the mouth timing as well as the meaning. Regular subtitles don't have that constraint.

Afaik the generally-accepted advice for translating is to focus more on getting the "feel" of the original translated, and less on making sure it is a 1:1 exact translation of the original words. Because there's all sorts of references and idioms and stuff, things that you just would not get unless you have deep cultural knowledge of the place the language is from.
Murakami always uses the same translator too (Jay Rubin), so I imagine he would have a good relationship with the author, and a good understanding of the best way to express what he's trying to say.
For what it's worth, the controversy over the Squid Game subs seems pretty overblown to me; it's not exactly a nuanced show to begin with, so I don't really know what difference a few lines are going to make. (though I don't know any Corean, so don't know for sure)

Disney+’s Marvel Studio’s What If
A few stand out episodes and a handful of duffers but in the end we’ve basically got a whole MCU phase worth of content in 9 half hour chunks. I think ending on a high and the strengths of its best episodes makes it greater than the sum of its parts.
7.5/10

It does partially shit itself towards the end.

Didn't help all the English speaking actors were absolutely shit, either due to poor writing/poor delivery it contributed to the dip I think.

I thought the VIP guest stuff was meant to be intentionally over the top and cheesy tbh. But yeah, it wasn't the strongest part for sure.

To be fair, western actors in asian films/tv are generally woeful regardless of how good or bad it is but they did get some dreadful dialogue to chew through.
And the luxurious decadence was hilariously low rent.

Sex Education S3, the wild and unbelievable bits were even more wilder and unbelievabler, the heartfelt and serious bits as well done as they’d ever been 7.5/10 will watch S4

For me, the issue with the VIPs wasn't that they were badly acted (though they were). It's that they made the show less interesting. It went from a fucked-up commentary about fairness and class and all of that, to a generic "rich capitalists are pretty despicable AM I RIGHT" screed pretty damn quickly. It's not like I disagree with that! But it's a less interesting and original direction than what the show started with.

Yeah. Turning it into literally a game show was not the right play. It would have been better if old guy had just set it up because he was rich, bored and had been wronged when he was younger.
But, despite the mania around it, I really dont think the show itself is much better than that twist anyway.

Oh god yeah. (spoilers for the end of Squid Game follow) The "we were just rich and bored lol, BUT YOU BET ON THE HORSES ISN'T THAT THE SAME THING" speech from the main villain was the most annoying thing about the ending by far. The best thing about the show is that all the participants are doing it voluntarily, even after they know the stakes. That's really interesting! But the actual villains turn out to be not interesting at all, and that's really disappointing. (maybe we should have a dedicated thread for Squid Game when it gets a second season)

Think they even went harder with how ancient everything looks, some of those cars. Enjoyable. Probably agree with 7.5. Would watch more too. Going to watch Squid Game next. To go even snobby about sub vs dub thing. Even the 'official' sub that comes with anime DVDs is shit. You need those fan subs.

Marvel's What If?... 7/10
When it's good it's fantastic, but the rest of it really drags it down. 10/10 for the Doctor Strange episode and 9/10 for the last two, but the rest all fall somewhere between awful and just about watchable and nearly made me give it a lower rating. Sadly you can't just skip to the good bits as it all comes together at the end.
I've got a newfound fondness for Strange after this and can't wait for the next film (Sam Rami helps!)
