Shogun Can only reflect what other people have said in that it's excellent. Lovely to look at and plenty to keep you watching throughout. And not a hint of the white saviour syndrome that I feared at first. As long as I didn't think too hard about how the English spoken is actually Portuguese but sometimes the English is English, then I was fully immersed. Even when Blackthrone's accent goes a bit Boris Johnson / Democracy Manifest. Feels like there's room for another series, but also works quite well as a self-encompassing story, so you don't necessarily have to go in thinking you're signing up to a five season epic. 9/10 Just finished this ourselves and would agree with all of this and the rating. Just really excellent TV and whilst I know very little of Japanese the detail of the sets and costumes were superb and was totally convincing. We were completely absorbed. Quite reminiscent of the Last Kingdom in terms of it's general themes and structure. Would recommend that series to anyone who wants something similar but different.

Ted
really enjoyed it, the episode with the bully didn't really work but its refreshing to have a show that is quite un-PC but its has good message at its heart. The cast is great but only 8 eps which is a shame but its getting season 2

The Bear S3. 7.5/10. Some nice individual episodes and scenes but agree with previous reviews - feels like a holdover season. Still oozes quality though

12 monkeys S1
Lots of time-travel shenanigans to prevent a virus outbreak that wipes out nearly all of humanity. (Interestingly it was made before COVID.) We watched this on Sky Showtime because we couldn't find anything else. I'm so glad we did! I love me some time travelling and this nails it.
Onto S2!

ooh. I meant to watch that and then never got around to it.
I think I remember people here saying that S2 went downhill quite a bit and started breaking its own rules?

Yeah, I recall S2 being fairly average, then I gave up.

Ah, we'll see. S1 was very good and kept a brisk pace (sometimes a bit too brisk), but I could not find any flaws. We did wonder how many seasons you could keep this up, given there are apparently four.

I remember watching that a few years back and really enjoying it. Definitely watched the first season, but can't remember if I got far in the second.

We Might Regret This (iplayer)
As mentioned in the other thread its another BBC3 comedy-drama. This time its about disability, mental health and relationships. Thereās some ok stuff in here but it is ultimately basically the same as every other one of these and its a format thatās worn pretty thin now.
The real highlight is the chemistry between Darren Boyd and Sally Philips as the older married pair. No one comes close to looking as believable and three dimensional as when those characters are on screen together.

Terminator Zero - 7/10
Retreads a lot of the well known story telling devices of the franchise but also has the added time get a bit more philosophical than seen elsewhere in the series. Overall tells an entertaining story that's a bit deeper than just 'Terminator : Japan' as the premise.

Finished The Curse. Certainly wasn't expecting that ending!
Liked it though. Really enjoyed the awkwardness of it all and the voyeuristic way it was shot, peering through windows and lots of use of reflections. Funny all the way through and sometimes laugh out loud, although not the sort of humour that is for everyone. Emma Stone was great, as ever, along with everyone else as well.
As with most shows, it was probably an episode or two too long.

Kaos (netflix)
ok the main reason we smashed 8 ~45 minute episodes in a weekend is because lurgy prevented more wholesome pursuits, but the secondary reason is that it's good
i briefly went to a school which thought itself posher than it was and had a classics department. the elderly teacher was predominantly concerned with telling a class of giggling schoolkids that ancient greek urns decorated with naked dancing men with stonking erections was NOT FUNNY. ok? NOT A LAUGHING MATTER
between that and a playthrough of Hades i feel like i've got a grip of the source material
anyway, alternative modern day setting where ancient greek gods are real and relevant. And it works. really works. in the other thread I said it feels a bit Hitch Hikery, and that sorta holds. witty narrator, alternative modern day. Multiple threads, stylishly told. Funny commentary on personal agency
the only bit which grinded was - and i may be alone in this - jeff goldblum. i've realised he plays the same role every time. life... uh... finds... a way. it's the same character. Add a more despotic tint this time round, but it's the same character every damn time.
8/10 - watch it, you won't be disappointed. it's better than norovirus

Just watched the first episode of that this evening. Really great. Perfect accompaniment with Age of Mythology Retold.

The real highlight is the chemistry between Darren Boyd and Sally Philips as the older married pair. No one comes close to looking as believable and three dimensional as when those characters are on screen together. Yes! You can certainly tell they've been working together on and off for 25 years. Easily the strongest aspect and it almost seems a shame that they aren't the focus as they are superb. Rest of it raises the occasional smile, but is slightly boring. Find myself reaching for the phone every now and then when it goes down those well worn narrative arcs, only to feel a bit guilty because the way it discusses disability seems quite ground breaking. At least, I can't recall watching anything else quite like it and I've certainly learnt some things.

The Boys S4
Disappointing. Saw a few things in passing that said the season wasnāt great but I assumed it was just gamer gaters upset because of reasons, but it turns out it isnāt that great. Writing has lost its zip, with it relying on being a straight up parallel to American politics. Itās just feels lazy and like a student wrote it. Another poster in the what are you watching thread said it was misanthropic and mean spirited and you canāt really argue against that, especially as it just seems to dive in 2000 era shock value for the sake of it. Did not like.

Personally I think that, if the "this is a satire" message of The Boys didn't get through to some idiots, the better course would have been to just forget the idiots and keep it at the level it's at.
Instead of what they did, which was to say "hey what if we just directly quoted people from real life and put 'supe' in place of 'race'?"

Freddie's Field of Dreams S2
Doesn't hit the highs of the first series, which realistically was never going to happen as they struck gold with the organic way that developed. However, whilst admittedly being slightly more contrived, the second season is also an occasionally devastating, hopeful and uplifting human story. Freddie's injury whilst significant isn't really what this is about, nor should it be, though he speaks pretty frankly about it.
Only real negative for me was that given they continually encourage a message of trying your best and support for each other, it was a bit jarring to see the poor lads with Pakistani heritage cast aside and barely mentioned again. Why didn't they just go to Sri Lanka or Bangladesh instead as a whole team?
Still, there's a lot that seems authentic and it's several cuts above almost all other reality tv. Seems like Freddie may try and do with the initiative which is great, televised or otherwise.

Star Trek Prodigy S2
Still entertaining, but sadly there's way too much confusing timeline stuff going on for my liking, which brings it down a bit compared to S1. Also some glaring time loop plotholes weren't resolved, unless I was just too confused and missed it. Still didn't make my head hurt though like the nonsense from the live action shows.
It was still fun to have our heroes back and follow them on their adventure, also nice to see more returning characters from earlier shows. So bitter that it's been cancelled so callously. This is the one Star Trek series that I actually wanted to see more of.

Colin from Accounts S2 - 9/10
Smashed it and loved it. Way better than first series. Pretty much all of the new characters are awesome and last series' are much better than before, even a few that irritated me. It's very very funny in some episodes and there are even a couple of semi experimental episodes. Roll on S3.

Resident Alien S3
Its gone too wacky and stupid, the whole plot arc could of been great but its really jumped the shark and how dumb its become. I went back and watched the pilot ep afterwards and it has better level of humour and Harry isn't screaming moron man child every second. iirc season 2 had more of this but they seemed to have turned it up to 11 for s3

12 Monkeys S2 9/10
Picks up where it left off in S1, but turns up the time travel by breaking some of the rules (not telling because spoilers). I'm still not sure if everything is "correct", but the amount of cleverness on display is fascinating. Quite some dramatic moments as well. We loved it!

Batman: Caped Crusader (Prime)
Stylistically very similar to TAS but a bit more mature in tone. It rewinds things back to the start of Batman's journey and he comes across as a bit of an asshole at times. The new voice actor does a great job, making playboy Bruce and brooding Bruce feel sufficiently different but believable. Some of the story conclusions came as a surprise to me and a couple of supernatural episodes felt like missteps in an otherwise fairly grounded world. Overall I enjoyed it a lot.

The Young Offenders Series 1-4
I've been going through this for a few weeks after being recommended it by a friend. From the outside in, I thought it was going to be awful in a Mrs Brown's Boys kinda way, but in fact it's really quite funny and starts to show quite a bit of heart as it grows into itself. Really decent series.
8/10
Interview with the Vampire Series 2
As good as series 1, and so much better than the film (I've not read the books, but now kinda want to). This series wasn't on my radar until this thread brought it up and I've loved every minute of it. It's one of those shows that oozes cinematic quality, everything about it is top tier telly.

Alma's Not Normal - 9/10
Semi-autobiographical BBC comedy by Sophie Willan about her life and bonkers family in Bolton. It's really funny and very touching at points. Her mother is a crackhead and grandmother is basically a geriatric nymphomaniac. We get to see Alma dealing with a whole lotta bullshit and how it wrecks her in various ways. But it's a very warm show given how bleak a lot of it is. Bit of a hidden gem I think and second series is coming out in autumn.

Brassic series 1 (SKY)
Iām on holiday so downloaded this for the flight and the quiet times. Iāve heard that itās good but whenever Iāve seen a trailer I thought it looked like a shite version of Shameless. Itās got 5 series though so figured it must be doing something right
Itās ok, very contrived but written reasonably well so the characters call out when youāre thinking āthatās a load of bollocksā themselves
The cast is decent but, as probably everyone thatās watched it has said, Michelle Keegan is terrible. She canāt act and every scene sheās in takes on a weird, even more amateurish vibe. Sheās not in it too much but when she is itās quite jarring
Iāve downloaded series two so Iāll carry on but not sure Iāll watch the rest
4 out of 10 (S1)

Pachinko season 1. Probably the best thing I've watched this year. Beautifully shot, written and acted. In fact, at times I was really aware that I was appreciating the acting, like watching Daniel Day Lewis. Helps that I went in having absolutely no knowledge of the historical era whatsoever and it's both fascinating and sad, but it never wallows in it, feels really human and genuine. I think it was user Syrette talking about how great it was so thanks for the heads up (to whoever it was!)
9/10. Maybe 10, it's really good.
