Conversations With Friends - 8/10
I devoured this. Loved Normal People and whilst this isn't as good, it's definitely not as bad as a lot of reviews make out.
I think the team behind this and Normal People have a filmmaking style that you either love or hate because of how ponderous (and pretentious) it can seem.
I'm a big fan of that! There is something about the longing that the characters in these shows go through that I can't stop watching. I think they're basically my equivalent of Love Island, but with characters flirting by talking about poetry instead of ripped alphas spraying squirty cream from pressurised cans attached to their groin into the mouths of a woman dressed as a sexy nurse.

I watched the first House of the Dragon and it just didn't stick in the mind. GoT had better, more interesting (and entertaining) characters, it felt bigger and I found HoD's obsession with childbirth-gone-wrong really fucking weird to the point I remember thinking the writers were wronguns. Very off-putting. I've had no desire to go back for season 2 even though I adored GoT (until the end, obviously).
The Wire, on the other hand, that's a show to go back to. I didn't really like or get season 2 the first time round but when I did a rewatch a couple of years back it was the season that really stood out and I loved it. I think you need to know you're going into something different, so you're not fighting the sense that you're missing out, to really appreciate just how exceptionally good, and sad, it is.
I'm rewatching The Boys right now. Those first two seasons were great.
Do feel like there's room for something big on TV right now.
In short, 5/10, 10/10, 8/10, 8/10

They get it out of their system by season 2. Not a babby in sight.

High Country (iplayer)
Crime drama set in Australian mountain forests. Its one of those shows thats set in the present day but is very close to basically being a western. It actually pretty good when its doing that, the more it acts like a police procedural the worse it is. Better than the average BBC/ITV job even if I wasn’t into the resolution.
Ghost US season 3 (iplayer)
More of the same. Its basically the same premise as our Ghosts but a bit more of a straightforward sitcom. Its a very easy watch and has a bit more fun with the ghost lore if being a lot more lightweight than the original. I like it.

User Mark1412 isn’t wrong though. After experiencing a difficult birth first hand HotD season 1 wasn’t an easy watch. That being said it wasn’t the biggest trigger for me and my partner. That honour belongs to Yellowjackets season 2. That really did reopen fresh wounds and had us both in tears.

Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda S1 (Amazon freevee)
Brought me back to the days of live TV where entire TV shows often felt like filler content to be passively consumed during the afternoon. Andromeda felt like that to me, with neither stories nor characters being very interesting, least of all Kevin Sorbo in the lead role. Not terrible, but unengaging and forgettable. Calling it quits now after finishing the first season.
Meh/10

You got further than I did.
I was using it as a Babylon 5/Crusade follow-up which probably didn’t help matters.

I mean, we had like 10 seasons of Baywatch + Baywatch Hawaii...

The Bear S3 - 6.5/10
Just spins its wheels for a bit and doesn't really go anywhere. As others have said it just seems to exist to set up S4. They clearly got too big too fast and scrabbled to come up with material for another season asap.
I very nearly abandoned it after 3 episodes, but it does improve a bit towards the end.

The Umbrella Academy Season 4
What a non event of a season. Just lacking the proper wierd of before.
If you've run out of ideas and money why bother coming back at all?
Not to say the individual beats aren't well performed but we've seen it all before. Well except for the finale.
Five/10

+1 for the above... As in 6/10 since I'm feeling generous. Pretty sad to end a show I really enjoyed thinking "thank fuck there won't be any more of that!" Yep, that was entirely pointless, and then they just go with the most predictable ending imaginable to add insult to injury. which the entire fucking diner full of Fives somehow hadn't considered yet? Seriously??? It has it's moments mind you, even if they're few and far between and mostly towards the beginning of the season. Five and Lila's breakaway bit was quite good, but kind of sucked away what little pace the penultimate episode had considering the stakes. Top marks for the final end credits song, though. One of my all time faves.

Shogun
Can only reflect what other people have said in that it's excellent. Lovely to look at and plenty to keep you watching throughout. And not a hint of the white saviour syndrome that I feared at first. As long as I didn't think too hard about how the English spoken is actually Portuguese but sometimes the English is English, then I was fully immersed. Even when Blackthrone's accent goes a bit Boris Johnson / Democracy Manifest.
Feels like there's room for another series, but also works quite well as a self-encompassing story, so you don't necessarily have to go in thinking you're signing up to a five season epic.

Sex Education S4: 6/10 It was OK. Still weird, and a decent watch, just not particularly good and ends on a complete whimper.
HotD: 7/10 It was good, if a bit underwhelming. The characters are just not as good and interesting as GoT. Sets not up to GoTs standard either, countless scenes just in dark rooms. Unapolagetically slow at times, like the anti GoTs S8. Looking forward to the next one though whenever that may appear.
The Boys, HotD, The Bear all a bit dissapointing to me. Hope Severance won't follow the trend. Yellowstone almost definitely will.

Curb final season
Finally finished it off. Rare for a long running comedy to maintain the level so well.
Excellent finale. Much better than that Seinfeld one.

Good Girl’s Guide To Murder (iplayer)
Because of Mrs Simple’s work we end up checking out a lot of YA adjacent material but even in that context this really is peak YA. Plucky sixth formers out to solve a murder and uncovering dark truths about their sleepy small town (where everyone knows each other). And yes, the teens are slightly quirky, brave, bookish, not-the-cool-kids types. Its all very convoluted but its done with a degree of style the BBC doesn’t always manage for this type of thing.

Dark Matter S1 (no, not THAT Dark Matter!)
I know I really need to pull my finger out and buy a sound bar, but fuck me this has some of the most appalling sound mixing/mumblecore I've ever experienced going on. It's a pretty solid take on the book, anyway. Easy enough to keep up with the multiversal shenanigans thanks to that sound effect off the Nintendo Switch adverts.
Edgerton makes a decent hash of playing multiple characters, and it's got Jennifer Connolly in it.

Umbrella Academy S4 3/10
Wowzers that was bad. For me personally I think this even topped GOT on how bad a final season could be.
Such a shame as it's been one my absolute favourite shows since it started. Unfortunately this just felt rushed and underdeveloped. Everything from the humour to fight choreography to basic plot fell absolutely flat.
Genuinely felt like it was made by entirely different writers and show runners, but as far as I can tell it's done by the same people.

We only watched the first two, is it worth continuing with the third?
We also have the final season (or two?) of Sabrina to watch and the second and third seasons of Sweet Tooth. Clearly our mood for Netflix fantasy fell off but we’d really enjoyed them all so far.

Only Murders In the Building S1 & 2 (D+)
Enjoyed both of these seasons, S2 perhaps not quite as good but still good fun. Great chemistry with the main cast, who all seem to be having fun. One of the best things we’ve seen on D+ so far (we didn’t get more than 20 minutes into The Bear)

My interest in Sabrina entirely evaporated after about 6 episodes, and I have no idea why. I was rather enjoying it, and then I just didn't watch anymore. It wasn't that I started disliking it or anything.
Maybe I got sidetracked by the olympics.

Fallout - 7/10
Lavish, but a bit boring perhaps? Strangely my partner was really into this which is surprising. Not normally a sci-fi head.
For me, the entire series felt like a prologue. The vault stuff was well done but I'd have liked to meet more crazy people on the outside. The various plot strands wavered in quality throughout. The Brotherhood storyline was probably the worst, despite being about supersoldiers. Gotta say, I found Ghoul man pretty dull as well. Episode after episode of him standing sinisterly before quick drawing someone and then being a cunt for the rest of the episode. Lucy is excellent though and it is genuinely at points. Will watch another, but hope it picks up.

The Last of Us - 7/10
Started well, peaked massively with Long Long Time (a standalone 10/10 episode), then fizzled out to a damp squib of an ending. TBH the impact of a few of the key moments in later episodes were spoilt having played the game (e.g. David, the giraffe, the hospital, David the Hospital Giraffe).
To be fair it's re-engaged my interest enough to finally get round to starting Part II... so I can equally spoil Season 2.

House of the Dragon S2 Really enjoyed this. I can definitely understand people finding this season too slow and aimless. In particular, Daemon wandering aimlessly around Harrenhal having visions for eight episodes. But I liked that it took its time between the "big" moments, did a bit of character development and let some new or minor characters have more screen time. And now all the ducks are lined up for an epic third season. The quality of the writing was consistently good and the visuals are sumptuous. The smaller scale story of family squabbles and politics was always GoT's strength.

American Murder: Laci Peterson (netflix)
While I obviously felt terrible for her family and the crime was unbelievably heinous and the man who did it a stone cold narcissist/psychopath, I do feel like the documentary was overly voyeuristic. I know that’s the hallmark of all of these but this one couldn’t even hide behind the facade of being a “re-examining of the facts” since the prime suspect was so transparent. I suppose the way in which events became a media circus is worth thinking about but really this is just more sensationalising a real tragedy.
We did watch a whole load of these back in the day but I’m not sure we’ll be starting a fresh genre binge now.

Firefly
One of the very few shows that didn't have 1 bad episode, it only got 1 season but I guess its better than having mediocre season 2 and 3 although could of got 1 or 2 more great seasons. It would of been nice to see more of the world expanded, how they explained the Reavers in the film was bit meh tbh
The cast is great, although simon is a bit 1D at the start. The fact is still holds up today is great, some special effects look a little dated but its very very minor

House of the Dragon S1 - 8/10
I wrongly thought that the lack of buzz about this was due to it being a bit of a waste of time, but happy to be proven totally wrong there. Lots of petty squabbles and power games on a smaller scale than GoT, but that's no bad thing.
Glad that I've picked it up, but also a little gutted that I'll have to wait 2 years for more after I plough through S2.

Frieren - Beyond Journey's End (Crunchyroll)
Years after her party defeated the demon king and became heroes of the land, Frieren, a somewhat impassive and aloof elf takes on the adopted daughter of the party's priest as an apprentice and goes on a journey to the end of the world, where it's said you can be reunited with the souls of the departed.
This is a real slow burning, low stakes anime. There's not a lot of fighting, and there's no big bad to defeat or grand quest. Instead it's all about the journey and the developing relationships of the terrific characters. It reflects a lot on how our world is shaped by others, and in turn we shape theirs and has some lovely moving moments. It's packed with warmth and charm and is one of my favourite shows for ages.
10/10
