Now I'm thinking should I re-watch The Wire or Deadwood.. Probably The Wire

I liked season 2 too. Honestly I struggled with the first the most.

On first watch, agree. Only really because it takes a while to tune your ear. Like a lot of these shows, on rewatch everything is there from the off.

Now I'm thinking should I re-watch The Wire or Deadwood.. Saying that makes me want to rewatch Deadwood. What an entirely singular show. The Wire is also very good.

I'll go with The Wire first, then Deadwood. I remember buying The Wire boxset whilst I was at uni, and consumed it all within a few weeks. That would never happen to me these days sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttttttttt

There's never a bad time to rewatch The Wire.
And Season 2 is an absolute masterpiece.

Season 2 is the one I'm most looking forward to re-watching. By the end I really liked it, but took me about half the season to really get into it. Just took a while to settle in with all the new characters it introduced, which becomes easier in later seasons when you actually get the structure of the series as a whole.
I should also actually get around to finish Deadwood at some point. Struggle a bit with that show. Absolutely love the dialogue, but still found it a bit of slog to watch, with the slow pacing. First time I watched it I got through the first season, second time I tried I managed to get through to the second, so presumably I would get through the third on my third attempt. Has been quite a while since I last tried, so maybe the pacing wouldn't bother me as much now (hey, I really liked the most recent season of House of the Dragon that everyone said was really dull)

Did anyone watch Generation Kill, the Iraq Invasion mini-series from the writers of The Wire?
I quite liked that too.

I watched The Corner. That was pretty good. I don't really have any interest in Iraq Invasion stuff.

Just started rewatching GoT, still epic TV (till it wasn't)
Fully fleshed out characters, top notch script, outstanding acting, Dinklage knocking it out of the park.
Great fun

I watched and enjoyed Generation Kill. I haven't seen The Corner but I read the book - brilliant, as is Simon's Homicide...which is another one I haven't actually watched i.e. its adaption Homicide: Life on the Street. Apparently that's coming back to streaming soon (Peacock - don't know how I access that here).

Yeah, I think that's largely why people react against it - it was such a surprising change of pace. But it's just as rich as S1 or any other season.

Homicide Life on the Street is brilliant. Haven't seen all of it as it was on at odd times on BBC2 but loved the episodes I did watch.

I tried to watch season 2 of Deadwood back in the day but I found the language incomprehensible. Cowboys acting like the Matrix architect.

I've only watched Season 1 of The Wire. I've had Season 2 sitting on the shelf for a decade, but somehow never gotten around to it.

Talking of GoT, does that House of the Dragon one managed to recapture the magic?
I assumed it was naff and ignored it, but I notice the thread on here has been pretty active recently.

Strange, the cadence and verbosity of the speech in Deadwood was endlessly entertaining for me.
Another that needs a rewatch soon.

I thought both seasons of HotD were great. Perhaps not quite as good as peak GoT, but certainly much better than anything in the latter half.
I can understand complaints about the most recent season being a bit slow and it certainly could have had a few scenes trimmed or cut entirely, but overall I thought it was really great. I fully expect it to be much better regarded when the full series is complete. Big issue is the big gaps between the seasons. Knowing that what we got is all we are getting for another two years is certainly disappointing. I don't agree that nothing happened, but there is certainly very little in the way of conclusions. If you can wait another four years, probably best to wait until it is all out and watch it altogether.

It doesn't seem to have the hype that GoT had, or maybe I'm just missing it.

Yeah, probably doesn't help that WFH has cut down on those water cooler discussions (bleurgh!), but it feels like there's been absolutely no hype for it. I wouldn't have even known the second season was airing. I'll be checking it out next anyway.

I think the first had some hype before it started and there was quite a bit of publicity around it. Definitely died down pretty quick though, even though consensus was pretty much unanimously positive. The second didn't get the same hype and the reception has certainly been much cooler.
It is a bit more subdued than GoT and times have moved on so it isn't as unique, so I guess it doesn't generate the same kind of conversations as its predecessor.

It feels a bit… pardon the pun… toothless in comparison. Partially because GoT rode close to the edge in terms of sexual content and violent scenes and no one in the series ever felt safe. It felt like there was a twist or shock around every corner.
But also, it had a real sense of humour running through it. Even characters like Cersei were delicious in their cruelty. But I’m finding HoD really poe-faced in comparison. And characters like Phoneshop guy (that’s his canon name, I’m sure) are really pushing into annoying territory, rather than funny.

Looking forward to the dynamic between Dunk and Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, though.

I started on that and was really enjoying it. Dropped off only because it arrived around about the same time as my son and it's a show that deserves to be watched with a clear head. Will have to revisit some time.

The Tyrion and Bronn double act could have series of it's own, a chuckle is never far away generally. Not started Dragon yet, but the impression I get is it is a bit po faced

Po faced is probably fair. There is barely any light relief and the few attempts aren't great.
But, it still has great characters. Daemon in season 1 was really good, albeit given little to do in season 2. The central figures of Rhaenyra and Alicent are great and the scenes together have been some of the best. Alicent's children are brill villains too and I would say fairly in keeping with GoT tradition. Then there is Paddy Considine's King Viserys, who is fantastic.

I think we mentioned before how giving the characters really similar sounding names makes it difficult to tell who the hell everyone is talking about as well.
What I wouldn’t give for one of the characters to be called Terry. Terry Targaryen.
