Instead of buying a £10+ bottle of wine just buy the cheapest. You’re paying double for about a 5% increase in quality because of various taxes and costs.

Instead of buying wine, just buy meths. It does the same job and you could start a hipster trend. Old-school tramp-juice joints.
Or have your own still in the shed, like Sid James did in that Bless This House episode.

Instead of that go to your local forest, wood or neighbours garden and steal any fruit or berries. Put them in a large container (bucket will do) and squash them a bit.
Leave for 6+ months then drink.

You can pick up the porno mag scraps while you're there. They can still be found in the woods right?

The cost of the cheapest is mostly taxes and costs so if you double the price you pay there's a disproportionately big increase in the quality of the wine you get.

Actually that is true. No one can really taste the difference though.

I suppose it depends what you're drinking it for.
If you just want to have a glass of wine and maybe get slightly tipsy, a Yellow Tail or other supermarket bottle will be fine, but if you want something that tastes great, you'd be much better served having a nice Domaine de Villemajou.
(other Corbieres are available)

I don't drink a lot of wine but for the last few years I've used those introductory cases from various places and they've seemed fine to me. When you run out, get the Mrs to sign up, then try some other company. Depending on how much you drink you can keep yourself going for a while. You might not save a great deal compared to cheap wine from the supermarket but these are probably tastier.

Or better still, as I learned today, if you want to block most ads and trackers from everywhere, change your DNS to the Adguard DNS. Thanks for the tip Mr The Hermit, did you notice it having any effect on your speeds? I tried it for a minute (3 5G router) and it made it unusably slow, don't know if I should've just left it to settle into it more or something.

Speed was fine, blocking didn't seem to last as long, a few less ads now but not as many gone as at first.

You could give NextDNS a try.

I'm quite a fan of Marketplace these days, in the last few months we've bagged two Ikea drawer sets for £20-£25 each (RRP 125 each), two identical IKEA wardrobes for £50 each (RRP £200 each), collecting a free condenser dryer today, which I believe is fully working and newer than the one we're replacing, which I might get £20 for. If you're patient, persistent if you want something specific and are prepared for the potential hassle of dealing with multiple idiots it can pay off.

HMRC are definitely messing up how much tax I need to pay, they seem to think I have 4k "other income" so they've taken that off my PAYE tax free allowance.
I'm pretty sure I don't have any other income at the moment.
Pretty sure last year's team is fudged too. I might just submit a tax return and see what happens.

It is probably to do with that new tax for innuits and the likes. Us sun worshippers are going to be subsidised by you lot, which is only fair as you won't be spending all your money on heating this winter, unlike us 'normals'.

I take umbridge with that as I've had to use a fan 24/7 over the weekend.
In other money saving news: saw a clickbaity article taking about which appliances are the biggest money sinks and what to avoid using.
One of those was a fridge. Yes very helpful, I'll just unplug that so all the food spoils.
Another top tip was to use a heat pump instead of traditional water heating. Yes, I'm sure folks who are struggling with have a spare 7-14k lying around to get a heat pump.
I know it was clickbaity, I was just amused at how useless it was!

I think it was the Mirror that offered 'Turn off the aircon in your car' as a top money saving tip during a 35 degree heatwave.

So, not finding an appropriate existing thread, decided to revive this one.
I have a student loan. Not a lot but I'm a drop out. So last year I owed around £4.4k.
Today it's £4.5k.
In my last year of work, I've had added in interest twice what I contributed via my salary.
Interest rate on student loan is now 6.25%
Unless I increase my income significantly, that leaves me permanently with a higher tax rate.
I suppose I'm 15 years on from the initial loan, so in 15 years it disappears, but it kind of feels like a scam to me.
Lock in a 2% rate or something (I'm not against anyone making a profit) but variable rate? On the education of the future workforce of the country?
I'm lucky my debt is so low, but 6.25% on £60k? Fuck that. That's just servitude.

So you're only paying, what, ten quid towards it a month?

Have you looked into 0% money transfer credit cards? Pay off the loan in full then sort out a payment plan in accordance with the interest free term.

Think of it more like a graduate tax than a loan, even if you didn't graduate. A loan is something you have to pay off in full, but this isn't the case here.

I just looked it up yesterday out of curiosity, thought about it for a minute and decided to have a rant. It wasn't really my situation I was thinking about. My loan was at the much lower rate back in the noughties. I think it was just much more thinking about the current graduate sitting on a debt of around £60k, at an interest rate of 6.25% who will pay this in perpetuity. Actually ever earning enough to pay it back would be impossible. Also, yeah, about a tenner a month. Not loads and I don't miss it really.

Yeah, does seem to be a massive con with them just milking extortionate interest rates. Even if interest rates are low they still add the cheeky 1% on top. I'd just overpay to get rid of it asap if at all possible, fuck being part of their grift for the next 15 years!

I aim to please!
I obviously never had one and just hate the thought of any kind of mounting debt (I've avoided debt apart from my mortgage like the plague ever since I maxed out my first credit card)
But yeah, a tenner a month over 15 years Vs £4,000 is obviously a better option.

Think of it as a punishment for being too young. The govt paid me to go to uni, and gave me a super cheap loan that paid itself off one year when inflation was really low.
I don’t know how students manage these days, I gave fuck all thought to financial matters back then, maxed out loans, overdrafts etc but in those days it hardly cost you anything. Even when I dodged paying it back for a few years by moving to Japan it didn’t accumulate that much extra.
