I'm hopeful of getting a better deal with VM this year so we can have TV service back with Eurosport and BT sport (now TNT) Virgin charge extra for TNT since the rebrand - I managed to get it thrown in for free with my recent cancel/renewal, but originally they were asking for £18 per month extra.

Wasn't it the same for Freeview Play? Pretty much fuck you if you want to use this on an existing device, we're only going to put it on a select number of new devices. I look forward to never bothering to check this out too. I didn't pay much attention to Freeview Play, but yeah, it looks like it. I don't know how they expect this to be successful.

Ugh, it will be a sad day when the digital / satellite channels get turned off and everything goes streaming only. Although I probably shouldn't say that seeing as I work in streaming. Look forward to the future of unskippable personlised ads and live events that run minutes behind real time everyone! Well, quite. I think there's a way off before Digital Terrestrial is withdrawn and everything goes IP (not least until virtually everyone has gigabit connectivity). But yeah, it'll happen at some point.

Yeah, I’ve had no luck with them, either. I’m going to dump the lot in favour of gigaclear broadband and an Apple TV.
If I really can’t live without it, picking up a sky stream puck doesn’t seem too much hassle.

Without an aerial or dish though, this is just a EPG gateway to the separate streaming apps - you won't have to manually open them, but it only delivers live TV alongside streaming if you have an aerial or dish connected as well. I can see why they want to make an app that centralises things, but this is missing so many basic features. If I am reading it correctly, you have to be logged into the other apps already, and it then pulls through the streams from those. Assume that's why it's on TV's only as it's integrated with the OS and getting it on every other device would be too complex. If the channels had found a way to agree a shared log-in for one service, and they had pooled resources for hosting and streaming, then it could be different, but they all want their own data and so we have this half-baked solution that isn't really an improvement on the current setup and is a downgrade in many ways.

Indeed, a spectacularly shit solution. I've not had live tv for about 6 months and can't say I've missed it tbh. Everything is watched on catch up with perhaps putting the news on via iPlayer.

But yeah, it'll happen at some point. With modern codecs you don't even need that great an internet connection. Watching some newer stuff on Netflix recently I noticed that they were streaming 1080p at around 1MBps bitrate and it looked fine. I was also surprised that my aging TV even supports HEVC.
While I feel a bit jealous at everyone getting these super fast broadband speeds, in reality we never really come close to stressing our 80Mpbs connection.

I can't say I've watched live TV for ages. Everything I consume these days is streamed/on demand or has been recorded from linear broadcast. Sitting down for appointment TV is not my thing at all.
We have sky mainly for OH who watches a lot of recorded reality based stuff but likes that everything is accessible by the one EPG, hopping across multiple apps is definitely not something she'd want to do.
If we can still get the same usability of the sky EPG and easy access to stuff just stream instead of replay then I can see me eventually jumping over to the sky stream box. I don't use the sky box for anything else though, prefer apps built into TV as they're fuck loads quicker

We might occasionally put it on while eating, or my missus will watch BGT and I'm a celeb. That's it though.
Live TV recording and time shift functionality used to be a top requirement for me with a TV, but I didn't even bother checking if my new one was capable of it or bother even trying when it arrived.

BBC Breakfast, Sci-fi channel on in the background while I'm working and live sports is about all we watch. I do wonder how many people are using the linear films channels and the like, I never even check the EPG, I've no idea if they show things that aren't in the on-demand lineup.

I'm a 'stick it on in the background' person, usually music, comedy or film channels. For me the loss of broadcast TV wouldn't be a huge issue, but I would miss it.

From my earlier post where I'm moving from sky internet to OneStream, I've had a letter from sky about leaving. They say as my package was a calls and internet package that my line will be cancelled and I'll lose my telephone number. Big whoop.
However they also say that if I am not signing up to another telephone line service, my internet with my new provider will cease to work in 30 days. I have signed up to only internet with new provider and asked them over Web chat if what sky is saying is true or just scare tactics. They say it's not true and my fibre will work without working telephone line.
Any techies her know if this is true? Worried that sky are right and the web chat guy was not the brightest...

Landlines are being phased out, on our last Plusnet renewal they switched ours off so you'll probably be fine.

Depends if they are using the part-copper/part-fibre network or the full fibre network. If it's the latter you'll be fine.

As has been said, landlines are going and if I hadn't been waiting for the fibre service I'm on now my next renewal would've been without the landline.

I’ve ditched sky and gone with gigaclear. 500mb for 22 quid isn’t bad.
Sky just couldn’t/wouldn’t get near it and didn’t really do much on the TV side, either, so the whole lot has been binned.
I got a second hand Apple TV 4K, so we are going to see how we got on with that for a while.

What does the apple TV do? Is it just a fancy roku kind of thing?

£22 for 500 is bloody amazing. They are all so desperate to increase take up to demonstrate that it was all worth the investment. Market share and ARPU the only way to keep the wolf from the door. Consolidation will happen eventually...

Yeah we've got a similar one called box broadband (because they have ugly boxes on every other lampost I guess?) that's crazy cheap. I'm just hesitant to have a guy drilling into my house with nervous dogs in the house for a speed I'll never use. Those prices will go the same way in a few years I'm sure.

What does the apple TV do? Is it just a fancy roku kind of thing? Pretty much. I have a lot of movies bought on Apple TV and it supports atmos for my AirPods Pro, so it’s worth the extra few quid over a firestick, for me. And if push comes to shove, I can get now TV or something if we really do miss it but we really were watching linear tv less and less to the point it just wasn’t worth keeping sky even if they had come back with a decent price.

Other than sport, linear tv is dead to me.
Have the fire sticks improved much? Resurrected one today and seemed quite responsive. But the more I added, the slower it got. Need to upgrade for the bedroom tv (currently using a now tv box which is also at a standstill)

We have a couple and they seem to fall off a cliff eventually. Fine until a firmware update cripples them. The 4k one we have in the bedroom is good. Does what it needs to. The older one in the girls room is ridiculously slow now.
They are really good VFM, though, considering they are like half price most of the year.

The former then. Which you do need an active line for but your new ISP might sort that.

You can also load it with certain things if you so desire.

If you needed a phone line it would have told you when you signed up.

Bear in mind Amazon are moving to their own Vega OS (Linux) later in the year. Last I read it was assumed this will remove the ability to sideload apps, though I don't know if there's any plan for any roll out to older devices. Chromecast is probably the safer bet for now.

Yep I'd seen mention of that possibly happening with fire sticks which was a key factor in going for google on my new one. Dougs basically whatever apps you may or may not have previously sideloaded onto firesticks I've found you can also do so on my Sony TV's and this new Google Chromecast. A big benefit is not having to navigate Amazon's crap UI. I suspect if the wife of me wasn't so ingrained in old shcool method of watching TV this chromechast would satisfy all requirements.

They're lightyears ahead of Firestick in terms of usability.
