Kind of the antithesis of this thread, but here's a great rundown of how the Guinness 'Surfer' ad was commissioned and made: We have been watching TOTP2 on BBC4 with the girl and she cant quite get her head around adverts becoming 'phenomenons' and constantly getting songs to number one.

Click "Play" button on YouTube.
Download a free audiobook with your 30 day trial at Audible.com.
10 seconds of YouTube video.
That advert for Visit Qatar with the loud as fuck singing, that completely fails to mention the human rights abuses.
10 seconds of YouTube video.
Learn 100 fart jokes with TikTok.
And they wonder why people install uBlock Origin.
You could just get Youtube premium.

SmartTubeNext ftw. I did try YouTube premium via India for a while, but fuck it, I do 90% of my watching on a shield TV so might as well just save that £1.27 a month.

I’m always fascinated by companies who deliberately make the user experience worse to try and drive people into upgrading and paying. Presumably it works but it feels counterintuitive to try and push people away to keep them like that.

Well nobody would ever pay if the free version was better.

I know they were trialling a £5.99 package - sans YouTube Music - in certain countries, which might be the right choice.

Dear YouTube: Do you people not understand that we just wanted to once again see the video of that bloke in the back of the van covered in paint and swearing at his mate who was driving, and not an ad for JustEat narrated by a bloke deliberately trying to sound like he's got a weird cadence. Thankyou.

I turned off ad personalisation so all my ads are for pyramid schemes and deliveroo Well nobody would ever pay if the free version was better. But Amazon just invented tv that you don’t need to subscribe to “freevee” if you will. Bezos is benevolent.

I got an advert on YouTube once that was over 50 minutes
I also find many YouTube ads to be offensively presumptuous
"So you're interested in playing Valorant huh?"
No
"You're wondering what League of Legends is all about"
No. Fuck off

Yeah that is pretty steep but I probably watch more Youtube a month than regular broadcast TV so I really want to avoid adverts. I'd also imagine everyone here is savy enough not to have to pay for it in £s which makes it much cheaper.

I got an advert on YouTube once that was over 50 minutes Happens a lot with kids programmes, probably due to the way kids don't mind watching loads of episodes mashed together randomly, e.g. my son keeps hitting an advert which is just a channel pushing their 2hr video of random Caillou episodes.

The entire music videos as an ad always made me laugh. Yeah, I'm not sticking around any longer than the 5 seconds it takes for the skip ad button to appear...

If I use the YouTube client on Android, it shows me a TikTok advert every single time. Never anything else, just the TikTok ones.
Mostly, I just use Brave for YT stuff, so no adverts.
When I worked at the Ad agency, folks got very upset with people saying that they blocked or muted adverts. 😁

The best YouTube ad I ever had was a half hour long one meant for incels.
Starts off with a woman in bed complaining to a camera how a guy got her in bed with one sentence, and how she found his phone and would reveal it to the internet as revenge. So begins an animated story where a guy promises to give this secret sentence away for free but first subjects the viewer to 29 minutes of talk about “feminazis”. I will never know if he kept his promise because I was only amused by the repetitious hate speech for about two minutes.
Still better than the sponsorship ads on ITV2.

That Chris Ramsey and his missus' show trailer that keeps playing. Did they not even rehearse it once? They realise that those get played over and over and are supposed to make people want to watch your show right?? I’m normally a tolerant person, but this one is seriously getting on my tits now

I just saw the moneysupermarket ad with Dame Judy Dench. It's not an especially annoying ad, but I just spent the entire thing thinking 'why is she doing this??'

Because they gave her a supermarket full of money, Bill.

But why does she need that money? Why does she need it enough to do that kind of shit? Does she have a crack habit or something?

Maybe to pass onto her grandbabies.
Don't Japanese advertisements regularly hire big Hollywood actors? There was a line of old ads I recall which featured Tommy Lee Jones and a Shiba Inu.

I suspect there is a point beyond which one says no to the offer of shit loads of money for a few minutes work, but I don't know what it is. Also, I imagine it's different for different people, as well. I would do shit adverts, too.

As someone who's spent most of the last fifteen years making TV promos for a living, I'm tempted to write a really long blog post explaining why the ad for Piers Morgan's new show is objectively terrible.
