This is a man who, in all likelihood, has at least made passing comments at his daughter about how fit she is. Shame doesn't come into it. Well, more specifically it was more about wanting to fuck his daughter if they weren't related but yes I see your point.

Not even wanting to fuck his daughter, but implying that he would definitely fuck his daughter and she would be totally fine with it.

Congress right now Ha, I just read about this today. It's quite amusing to see Republicans talk shit about each other so publicly. I also read that Macarthy had moved into the office without even having all the votes. What the fuck is wrong with these people???

There’s a scenario pending where Jeffries might end up speaker - if in the second round Rs start voting present or abstain he could cross the majority threshold. That would be absolutely the icing on the cake after the midterms, that they’re so incompetent that even with a house majority they still end up with a D speaker. Probably won’t actually happen but would be hilarious if so.

So because the Qanon crew - stalwart crusaders against paedophilia - don't like McCarthy, they've thrown a spanner in the works by nominating a....
...Guy notorious for ignoring complaints about underage sexual abuse when he was a school wrestling coach.
Am I getting that right?

It’s a protest vote really. No way Gym Jordan has enough support to take a majority even if McCarthy steps aside. That’s when you’ll see moderates abstain or vote present, which gives Jeffries the pathway in. They’re in a situation where they’re absolutely fucked.

There's surely not a world where the Dems end up as speaker? Is that even possible?

Yeah, it just requires a majority vote of all voting members. If enough GOP are absent or don’t vote, it brings the majority threshold down. The Dems are solid in their support for Jeffries, so if that threshold falls to 212 he’s in.

That being said now they’ve broken for the day you can guarantee this evening there’ll be all sorts of power deals going on. Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a rally behind another speaker that they nominate in tomorrow’s ballots and McCarthy is off the table entirely. If they have another day of this embarrassment even the base will have a hard time denying there’s a GOP civil war going on, and the more split the party is, the more fucked they are for 2024 and beyond.

Another plausible, though probably unlikely given the logistics, scenario someone pointed out to me: if the GOP vote becomes even more split (say McCarthy stays in but more votes get split between Jordan/Scalise/whoever else gets nominated), Dems could also vote present or leave to bring the majority threshold down and vote Jeffries in.
It’s going to be a loooooong angry night for Republicans tonight.

So what exactly is the problem they have with McCarthy? I haven't been following this at all, but my impression was that he was very Trumpy. So I don't know what their issue is.

For some he’s too Trumpy and for some he’s not Trumpy enough, and rather than meet in the middle those on either side would rather self destruct their own party.

Is there any background to how this has happened, it can't be purely because of the mid-term results, right?

No one really knows for sure but the buzz is the hard liners and Trumpians want to punish their party for how badly they fucked up the midterms and are now being intentionally belligerent in either an effort to hold the party hostage to their whims or force out all the people they believe to be RINOs/Never Trumpers.
I think the truth really though is that they’re an incredibly fractured party without any central tenet. Some of them want to go back to classic small government conservative, some are dyed in the wool neocons, some are tea party/far right wingers. Some want to govern, some want to just own the libs, etc etc.

Was in a conversation the other night and wanted to refer to someone who'd only been in their job a short time as "the Liz Truss of...", but I couldn't for the life of me remember her name!

Got the same infection. Bullshitters, and people who were fine with that until uh oh. This is why there’s only two Sith at a time. You can’t make a big team out of people whose sole philosophy is self-interest at any cost.

Trump is throwing his whole weight behind McCarthy but allegedly the rift of no votes has grown overnight because of it. This may be the biggest “fuck you, you’re done here” sign to Trump the GOP may ever give.

Fourth vote failed. Fifth underway.
One R voted ‘present’ this time round. Another four to do the same and I believe that would lower the threshold enough that Hakeem becomes the Speaker

Need 8, I think, but I’m hoping there’ll be a domino effect happening now in this fifth round of voting. The big “mystery nomination” people like Rudy were hyping last night turned out to be a nothingburger, despite everyone claiming it would be nominations for Trump. Maybe they misheard “Donald” and went “Donalds” instead.
