Originally the founding fathers had a power sharing setup where bipartisanship was built into it. That lasted about three elections before they abandoned it.
This still has some way to go to meet the longest Speaker election record. 133 ballot sessions over 2 months.

I don’t think it’ll come a shutdown. The Freedom Caucus A) isn’t smart enough to play games of 4D chess like that and B) don’t have enough of a majority to hold the whole House to ransom, only their own party. The FC legitimately don’t want McCarthy, so the Dems hold the trump card of if it gets too far into the game, they can either just switch votes (or vote present) or, as currently anticipated, negotiate with 8 moderate Rs to fill in a saner choice. At the moment it’s just popcorn entertainment/a game of chicken to see if the Rs will fold and abstain, as getting a D speaker in an R house would be hilarious.
