Surely, if some of the general indicators of economic health are looking good (job creation etc), you are going to make that clear? Maybe they didn't do a good enough job of addressing the disconnect between how people actually felt and what those indicators showed, but if people are screaming that the economy is going down the pan, pointing out that that viewpoint isn't borne out by the metrics that have historically been used to identify whether that is actually the case seems to me like an entirely reasonable stance. 'The economy is great actually' 'Ok, why is rent half of my take home pay and a beer is £7?' 'general indicators of economic health like GPD and the stock market are looking good' 'get fucked, idiot' That's where the "Maybe they didn't do a good enough job of addressing the disconnect between how people actually felt and what those indicators showed" bit comes in.

Seeing as my predictions in this thread have proved to be so incredibly accurate, here is where I see the next couple of years going:
Trump will give RFK the Health Secretary job as he has said he will RFK will ban mayonnaise as he has said he will There will be riots on the scale of nothing you have ever seen Trump will drop dead of a prolapse Pres Vance will appoint Trump Jr as his VP

His dad lived to 93. Hereditary genes play a big part of lifespan, much more than other lifestyle factors, the fucker is going to make it through his third term no problem.

This looks like something my friends communist facebook page( Memes voor Massa) would post.... Although I get the sentiment, socialist programms/policies require carefull implementation which again requires a relatively competent administration. Sadly the conservative/liberal right have gutted most of that during the last two decades. My parents have been civil servants for 50 years at this point (from being nurses, head of local health centre ending as regional health officials/policy makers). They have seen the slow but sure dismantling of both decentralized decision making, knowledge retention and the push towards economy of scale/automatization and sub-contracting. I have many friends in consultancy but, and I am sure this is going to piss off some people here who are consultants: 75% of govermental outsourcing is a total waste of money and simply exist for job creation and a way to pump money in circles. The constant outsourcing for assessments that are not being used, lack of knowledge sharing because its all done through sub-contracting while simultaniously not replacing experienced policy makers in municipal/provincial positions. Apologies for going off on a bit of a rant thats slightly unrelated. I have too much pent up frustation and disapointment towards the govermental system as a whole. Its even worse when I talk about sustainability....

Anyone wanting to understand why some voted for him could do worse than looking on r/Trump on Reddit.
They’re wrong about all of it but if that’s their thinking then I can understand how he got in. They aren’t all stupid or racist (although many are), many are misinformed or just not extrapolating what has been said and done into the worst case scenarios.
They also think the economy is shit and it’s Biden’s fault. Probably didn’t help that Harris said she wouldn’t do anything differently.

As an aside, are you on Bluesky and just advised me that I can use my web domain as my handle? (just noticed the Otto part on Bluesky). If it was, THANKS! If is wasn't, ignore everything...

The constant outsourcing for assessments that are not being used, lack of knowledge sharing because its all done through sub-contracting while simultaniously not replacing experienced policy makers in municipal/provincial positions. My uncle is an NHS bean counter and he was telling me about how they were having an efficiency drive in their IT outsourcing because the average fault raised was costing north of 3k because they were encouraged to replace the PC rather than fix the fault. Browser running slow? New machine. Can't open word? New machine. Can't print? You'd better believe that's a new machine. Lack of governance and accountability encouraged outsourcing partners to take the piss as much as possible. Outsourcing has been ruinous to our national infrastructure.

Not that I want to sound like I agree with Musk, but downsizing a whole bunch of wasted government bullshit isn’t a terrible idea. It’s the one part of me that leans somewhat old school Republican in that smaller government (in some areas not connected to social matters) = better.
Again, not agreeing with what Musk is proposing as he’ll just make it rampant cronyism and trying desperately to be a meme edgelord instead of being actually efficient.

And yeah, I used to work in an outsourced NHS IT shop decades ago, and even then it was basically just a supply chain of engineers swapping out machines over actual break/fix work.
Though that said we did sometimes encounter such fun things as GPs still running Windows 3.1 and doing tape backups that were just left under the receptionist’s desk. Fun times.

Outsourcing has been ruinous to our national infrastructure. ^^This^^, and it is essentially stealth privatisation (or more like stealth privateering). I'm sure that many sectors of our local councils and the NHS are having their budgets squeezed, but when I worked at the NHS (admittedly now over 20 years ago) this sort of behaviour was rife, and it was less of a case of the NHS being underfunded than the NHS being absolutely riddled with parasitic providers who had negotiated outrageous contracts with the Trust management and were squeezing as much money out of them as possible. It's hard to imagine this has changed much, as it is rife everywhere these days and this kind of 'business practice' seems to be the cornerstone of MBA courses or something like that, given how prevalent it has become. Some people have no shame, I guess

Same in academia tbh. When we were a government funded research institute we used to have an IT dept that would fix stuff, or shove in more memory to keep things going as long as possible.
Now we're embedded in a university, it's all just give everyone a new computer every couple of years. Which can't be cost effective at all, and there's as many IT folk as before, so there's not even any cost savings on staff.
Never mind the endless amount of admin staff, a lot of whom who seem to be in the business of creating paperwork to keep their own jobs going.

A mate of mine runs a curtain and blind company and does all the bay curtains etc for the local hospital. So many stories of rooms.being designed without any thought meaning things just won't work, or deployed for one thing one week, another the next meaning he's back in. Keeps him gainfully employed but drives him mad in waste.

Which can't be cost effective at all, and there's as many IT folk as before, so there's not even any cost savings on staff. That's a slightly different con. In the last few years suppliers jacked up the unit price and convinced clients it was better to lease these machines and rotate them than buy a depreciating asset to keep you on an infinite rolling payment scheme.

It’s not helped by shit like Microsoft making seemingly arbitrary hardware requirements for Windows 11 and then EOL 10. We already had to do a hardware refresh for 7-10, and now we’re in the same boat even though most people’s machines are running fine for what they actually do day to day.

I completely forgot Trump will be speaking at the God damn Olympics. I mean, he has to survive 4 more years for that or at least not go completely senile on his diet that consists entirely of mcdonalds.

I got given a laptop to work from home during the pandemic (fair enough), a replacement when we returned to campus and another replacement recently after an issue with the hdmi port. They used to have an office for fixing stuff that you could pop into, now they basically just have a garage full of laptops.
