I wish it had a few more sports. Though I notice they've added Basketball since I last checked, so at least it's up to 8.

A fair argument, but Iâm not sure else Iâd like to see. I would like to see more courses for golf, as that is the one sport that depends on variety in its challenge. Something like pool would be nice, but all these other sports are quite brisk. I donât know how you could work that into something like pool.

I guess it's because we're coming from Wii Sports Resort which has like 12 'sports'.
In fairness, the Switch Sports ones seem more like proper mainstram sports, whereas Resort has more ones like Flying Planes, Throwing Frisbees for dogs, Jetskis, canoing, etc..
But when we first looked at Switch Sports the drop from 12 to 7 seemed quite dramatic.
I always kinda liked the Archery one though.

51 Worldwide Games has a few sport games; bowling, darts, pool, golf. Had some great battles with my eldest.

Hmm not sure if Prince of Persia is better than Metroid Dread so far.

I prefer Dread, no doubt about that. Itâs the more polished game of the two, but this is a much bigger game and the character growth (in terms of abilities and upgrades) is much more exaggerated. Theyâre both games Iâll likely hold onto until I die or become desperate for cash.

I was tempted at full price. I ducked in and out of that game around the time of the first update, so Iâve been keen to have another go. Let us know how you get on with it.
Iâm pretty deep into Starfield right now, but would like to return to No Manâs Sky eventually and being portable definitely makes it more appealing.

Itâs too much work for me to link, but Digital Foundryâs latest Switch video is a good watch if youâre a nerd for graphics. A fitting tribute for the system and weâre starting to get into that window where everyone will be listing their top-game lists and such.

They also say that the Switch successor announcement is weeks away, which was surprising, until I realised that a September announcement followed by a Q1 2025 release would make sense (and be the same as what the original Switch did).

So would that coincide with a price cut to the Switch for Christmas?

Iâm gonna guess, given how weak the yen is, that a Switch 2 will cost about ÂŁ350-ÂŁ380 and the Switch will see a minor drop to about ÂŁ180-ÂŁ190.
Just guessing, but given that the thing is still selling well enough, they donât have to do much to make it look like a cheap alternative and they are gonna massively struggle to sell a new console at any kind of profit.

I wonder how much of a cross over between the consoles we are going to see. If the OG Switch is still selling well, are we going to see a lot of developers making sure their games can run on both systems or are Nintendo going to want to limit the crossover and encourage people to upgrade?
Some devs have done miracles with the Switch in getting their games running there, but it also clearly has massive limitations. I guess we are all expecting a Switch 2 to mostly just be a resolution bump and a slight improvement on the visuals, alongside some upscaling features, so developing for both won't be that much of an issue. Hopefully the old Switch won't hold back developers tapping into the potential of a new system though.

I have to say I love nintendo Gold points! Mainly because they give you quite a lot, and because I always forget I have them. So every time I buy a game on the eshop I'm confused why it's cheaper than I expected. Bought Brothers: Tale of Two Sons because it was reduced to a bargain 310 yen. Then it ended up as like 200 yen! Then bought Submerged for a whopping 100 yen, and it ended up at 90 yen because of the points from Brothers. Given how expensive the big first party Nintendo games are, they give you enough Gold to pick up a couple of indie games for free.

A fair few of us got a ton of points for renewing our subscriptions. About ÂŁ14 worth, which went towards a couple of games that were on offer. Itâs not too bad. You tend to save about a pound or two on most purchases, if youâre not looking tat the very cheapest of games or offers.

Bought my boy Zelda TotK for his birthday as he liked the first one.
I fucking hate it so far.
Shit guidance on where to go. No fast travel in a map thatâs more confusing than any other Zelda Iâve ever played. Shit mechanics (like using Cancel to confirm how many things you want to build or hold). Flakey as all fuck building mechanic.
Looks like the intern made this. Maybe it improves but itâs the least good intro area of any Nintendo game ever.

You unlock fast travel once you've finished the first four shrines as part of the intro area, and can then fast travel to any unlocked (not necessarily completed) shrine, among many other places that you haven't encountered yet, via the map. IIRC BotW was just about the same, including the use of cancel you mentioned. Guidance is kept to a minimum by design (again, much like BotW) to encourage you to go whenever, but there's a sort of natural progression counterclockwise around the big starting island, signposted by things like, for example, the midair rails that you build something to traverse generally leading that way. Building can be a bit hit or miss, personally I got used to it very quickly (and the amount of things it lets you do with a bit of creativity is downright ridiculous) but I could see it take some doing for others. It's used often, but in places where it's mandatory the materials you need are never far and you can complete a surprising amount of things without using it at all. Overall, if you didn't like the freeform nature of BotW (or never played it at all and aren't liking what you're seeing now) I'm sorry to say that I don't think you'll enjoy yourself all that much. You still have a lot of things to unlock, but the general vibe is "BotW but much more of it", so...

My son, on the other hand, absolutely adored it and has probably sunk hundreds of hours into it. He's built the weirdest contraptions, found loads of weird secrets, unlocked all the best armour and weapon combinations, and is currently on a second run through.
It seems to be very much in that Minecraft vein of games where there are just so many things to do and very little guidance, so you have to look everything up on wikis or youtube videos. Which just makes me immediately nope out with mental exhaustion at the idea... but kids seem to love that shit.

Played BotW to the end twice with the kids and they enjoyed it a lot. This one - the intro island at least - is leaving us all cold. More linear than BotW was for the most part with lots of unguided fudging around to find the ârightâ route.
In BotW the kids could just fool around exploring if they hit a bump. In this, youâre locked into a small crĂšche and not let out until youâve eaten all your veg.
Maybe it gets more fun but right now is BotW written by a pedantic misanthrope.
Edit: One example of the âStop having funâ design was facing a choice, after third shrine, of walking back across the entire island to get to the Temple or chancing upon some wings that would fly you there in a fiftieth of the time. Given how much trudging relentlessly across the island weâd already been forced to do, it was YouTube that lit the way to the less stupid path.

The intro island is it's own little world. Once you get off that it's much more of an open world.
I hated the intro island so I don't think I ever got much further than that. You might do better if you liked BotW. We haven't played that one.

jeepers if you and the kids liked BotW I'd recommend pushing through, you'll be in familiar territory pretty much the moment you get off the starting island. I will point out that it's probably in your best interests to follow the "intended" path for a little while, at least until you get the paraglider (it's not immediately given to you upon finishing the floating island, unlike in BotW with the Great Plateau, but rather after going to the Lookout Landing, visiting the ruins of Hyrule Castle and heading back to Lookout Landing to report your findings). And going along with it for a little longer (heading towards Rito Village) will rather organically introduce you to two of the biggest "side" objectives, namely the geoglyphs and the Princess Zelda sightings all over Hyrule. (I tried to keep the spoilers vague and double-tagged the ones that have a bit more detail)

I would say that the intro island is a lot worse than the Great Plateau. The Great Plateau really did feel like a miniaturised version of the main game, whereas the sky island you start off on in TotK feels much more like an overly long tutorial.
If you like BotW, then I would have thought you will like the game proper, so worth pushing through that opening section.

It's like an overly long tutorial that somehow tries to hide half the stuff it's trying to teach you. It's weird. And boring.

Thanks Junior! Just landed in Hyrule proper and the boy is back in to the game now. Flying the wing thing to the Temple took a lot of goes. Couldnât make it dive fast enough to avoid flying over it. Hopefully thatâs the last teeth-gnashing point for a while.

Ah to play BotW again with a fresh mind. Yep. One of a short list of games whose file I'd want to wipe from my brain's memory card (it's analogy day today apparently) to experience again fresh. Others include Paper Mario TTYD and probably the entire Xenoblade series (definitely 1 and 3 at least)
