How are the Luigi's Mansion games? My son really wanted one a couple of years ago, but we never got it and he kinda forgot about it. The gameplay always looked very basic to me (though I've only seen a little in trailers). Is it more than 'walk around and shine a light on ghosts'? Kinda. I consider them to be more like a 3D metroidvania. There is a fair bit of backtracking as you hunt out ghosts, but you’re also solving puzzles, hunting out keys or mechanisms that unlock further progress. Some ghosts travel between rooms and floors that require a little more than simply following them through a door. You can find money hidden under rugs, behind curtains, in cupboards or the walls, and these can be used to upgrade your gear. Catching the ghosts is a kind of combat, too. It’s simple enough to grasp, but it requires coordination and effort. There are also boss battles that require mastering techniques to exploit weaknesses. They’re not easy games, but they’re not particularly difficult either. They are carefully and thoughtfully designed, from a gameplay perspective, and they’re also full of charm. Luigi’s Mansion 3 was a solid effort, but perhaps felt a little more linear than 2, even though that’s technically not true. I just found each floor offered a pretty linear route to explore, with little reason to deviate from the obvious. Luigi’s Mansion 2, however, offers variety by altering the layout of Mansions with its mission-based designed. Every time you re-enter a mansion, the layout will be slightly altered, requiring you to draw on experience to find a way to access areas that have seemingly become inaccessible. I personally preferred that kind of design.

I would also add to that great write up that they are wonderfully tactile and expressive games too. When you pull on curtains or rugs and capture ghosts you really feel that come through the controller, combine that with the animation it’s a really easy game to fall for. I think any kid aged 8-13 (before they too cool for Nintendo) will find something there to enjoy. I think you could drop that a couple of years if you play through it together.
Tempted by Dark Moon as well. Ended up as one of my favourite games that year it came out (maybe even favourite).

On a side note I came into post that Nintendo are offering £16.80 in gold coins if you purchase a voucher for two games. With the Zelda coming up I may partake in that!

Mario Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is on Game Trial as of Monday. Rumoured to be recieving a remaster of sorts on Switch 2, it is genuinely an excellent game and worth your money. Possibly in my top 5 Switch games ever.

Luigi's Mansion 2 is fairly hard!

I found the bosses quite tricky, but the mansions themselves quite chill. It’s definitely more taxing than the third game. Anything in particular proving tricky?

Mostly the bosses. I think the Spider one I died a few times as I was confused what to do next.. I also seem to get 1 star a lot and Luigi shrugs, so I assume I’m doing crap haha.

Nah. Don’t worry about the stars. Thats more for replay value. You get rated on speed, damage taken and I think the amount of coins you find. I personally preferred playing more slowly and checking for secrets at every corner. Sometimes you’ll still bag the occasions 2 or 3 stars.
Also, if I remember correctly, that first boss is the trickiest. The rest are far more self explanatory.

What is the opinion of Luigi's Mansion 3 versus the previous games? Only played the third one and ended up only playing it for 4 or so hours, as I found it all a bit simplistic.
Should probably give it another go at some point, as maybe it gets more interesting at it goes on, but didn't seem like it would from what I saw.

3 is very linear and, in my opinion, the easiest game. If you’re very thorough, like I was, it can begin to feel like a slog quite quickly. The second game has more variety, with the mansion layouts changing slightly between missions.
However, if perhaps you found the game the be slow, this one won’t change your mind. It’s arguably slower as you’re asked to explore and interact with each room a little more thoroughly.

Anyone tried Zelda 4 Swords on the Expansion Pass GBA emulator? Am I right that it doesn't have offline multiplayer for multiple players on the same console?

I've been wanting a Satisfye Pro Grip in forever, but I didn't want to pay the premium of getting it shipped from Amazon US. I found a used one on Ebay for £20, which is about what I'd pay anyway. Hopefully when it comes I haven't wasted £20...

Out of interest, does anyone actually ever play any of the Nintendo online nes/snes/gba etc... games?
I always think that it's cool they're there, but then never actually really play any of them.

Fairly often! I’ve probably clocked around 250 hours on all the platforms. The only library I haven’t given much time to is the N64 one as those games haven’t aged well and in some cases the controls aren’t well adapted.
There’s so many all-time classics in there and I’ve got a huge soft spot for the NES puzzle games like Fire & Ice, Adventures of Lolo and Solomon’s Key.

There are a lot of decent to good games on the various retro platforms. Granted, there is also lots that have aged badly but on the whole it's a solid offering if you look beyond the obvious headline games. I agree with Dave that the N64 games have aged poorly.

I reckon so. At least until Christmas. It’s bizarrely cheaper than the most recent Rabbids game at the moment.

I’ve been getting into Switch Sports a little more, now that I have a proper broadband connection again. The golf, in particular, is great fun, as everyone plays at the same time. In typical Nintendo fashion I get asked if I want to stop playing as I’ve been playing for over an hour.
