I always forget it has a tough screen as well. The only thing I ever use it for is navigating menus. It has all that other functionality like motion controls, IR sensor(?), whatever it is that scans the Amibos, etc... that I never use as well. Though I think Trombone Champ uses the sensor. Needs a barcode reader

7 year olds birthday coming up start of June, she wants a Switch which is all fine and good. She has a tablet and plays on the PS5 with me but this will be her console. Is the difference between OLED and original version worth the £50 bump...I think it probably is, but just wanted to double check with the hivemind. I'm looking at bundle deals now, not much out there at the moment for OLED, but I can get original switch, sports, kart and 3 months of online for £280 which seems pretty good. Best I can see the OLED model for is £270 on it's own on Amazon (but a 3rd party seller).

I'd say avoid splurging on the OLED model (especially if you can't find a good bundle, unlike the base) mostly because there's a good chance you'll be here in a year or so for the Switch 2

Kickstand is a massive improvement if tabletop use is a must.

I guess the big question is whether she will be mostly playing on a TV or whether she will be using it in portable mode quite a bit. If it is mostly going to be an under the TV system then there will be no benefit with getting the OLED version, as the improvements are pretty much all related to portable.
OLED is supposedly a much better screen and owners of it say it is a big improvement (I only have an original and I only really use it on the TV). Of course, even if it is a big difference, it might be something your daughter won't care that much about, particularly as she won't have the comparison (unless she sees friends with the OLED version).
Personally, I think the £50 is not that much more and you might as well get the best one. Even as someone that doesn't use it much in portable mode, I would get the OLED version if I was buying now. Only you can say whether you think an extra £50 is a lot more though.

As I assume your daughters hands are small etc., if she is going to mainly play in portable mode consider the lite, as it is way more comfier.

Thanks all - it'll be a mixture of playing on the TV and portable so something to consider in that regard, it is only £50, and at the moment there are no amazing deals out there either way.

None of my kids have ever mentioned any issues with the screen (we have non-OLED) or complained that their friends ones have a better screen.
Doesn't seem worth it to me for something a kid is going to use, but it maybe depends how fussy that kid is about tech. And how much the extra 50 means to you.

FWIW the FE household never felt the need to upgrade either, and that extra 50 could be put towards an extra game or something instead. YMMV on whether that's more important than the slightly better tech though.

This stat is kinda wild. Guess this is what happens when you don't chop and change your internal game studios every couple of years...

This is what swayed it for me, for that extra £50 for the OLED, which my kid isn't going to notice, I got an additional game for her to play instead (Princess Peach which she is desperate for). Mario Kart and Sports for all of us, and Princess Peach for her, so I think she'll be happy with that. Gang Beasts is also on her list which made me happy (loved it on original release back in the day) and Kirby, but they can wait.

I was going to mention that the OLED had double the internal storage, but as you will likely add a MicroSD card too, it may be a moot point. I think the battery is a bit better too.

If it's a new console for a 7 year old then It'll be a long time before they fill even the base model's storage, especially if you're buying physical games. And yeah, just grab a 256GB SD card for a tenner if you ever do need to increase storage.
As much as I love my OLED, getting the cheaper one seems to be the right move.

I dunno, we filled up the internal storage and the 128Gb microsd pretty quick Though a lot of that is Fortnite FYI mikeck Buying games on carts is good for storage (though some cart games don't actually have the game on the cart, and you still end up needing to download a bunch of Gb), but the Nintendo Eshop is often much cheaper. Especially for smaller / indie games such as Gang Beasts. They have very frequent sales. www.dekudeals.com/ is very handy if you want to check price history or get alerts on sales. PS/ If you have Online there there are a bunch of retro games you can play for free. Probably won't appeal to the kid though.

Thanks all for the tips and advice, appreciate it. Been a long time since owning a Nintendo (not since the Gamecube) so I'm sure I'll be in here regularly once it's up and running.

Looks like Pullblox and Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush are coming to Switch this year. Pullblox is fantastic and well worth a sniff. I was kinda hoping for a sequel on Switch, but a port keeps the series alive, I suppose. As for Kirby, it’s a looker, but it has moments of frustration. Especially on Auto-scrolling stages. But I can’t imagine it’s very playable in docked mode. Great news, I loved the Pullblox games on the 3DS and Wii U.

You picked possibly the best time to rejoin IMO, massive library for you to catch up on and (probably) a decent amount of time before the next console to do so (plus there's still the possibility of backwards compatibility)

You could get her Animal Crossing. Then you might not see her until she's about 9.
It got mine through the Lockdown at least.

It is definitely for her guys, you all seem to think it's for me. SHE wanted it I mean I might well join in on some games of Mario Kart, Sports, Gang Beasts get a copy of Breath of the Wild for research purposes etc, but it's HER present.
