Yeah, the Sky trilogy was really good. But the move from Xseed to NISA makes it difficult even if there are Japanese modern console ports. See also, CS1 and 2 on Switch/PS5.

As long as the ports are still being done by PH3 (Durante's company), which they seem to be, I'd say PC all the way for Falcom ports if you have the choice. I've been playing Ys 9 on Steam Deck and compared to when I played it through on PS4 Pro it completely blows it out of the water in terms of performance. I'd argue Durante did a better job on CS1 and 2 for PC than Artdink did on PS4, CS2 in particular had some areas of bad slowdown on PS4 Pro. That shouldn't happen on a Vita/PS3 port!
The 'proper' PS5 version of Kuro no Kiseki is out next week, I played through that game at a blurry 30fps with light sources not loading in properly (as in you'd turn the camera and street lights would appear, changing the lighting, as the actual objects moved into view) originally so I dread to think what the new engine will be like when ported down to Switch.

Does anyone play Minecraft on Switch? I have a couple of quick questions:
Bedrock is cross platform, right? Can a Switch player join a PC player's game? On the same network? By IP address?
Do they need a Nintendo Online subscription to do so? I don't really get Nintendo Online. You don't need it for multiplayer Fortnite, Fall Guys, Rocket league, but you need it for some other games. How about Minecraft multiplayer?

This might help, it's from three years ago but I don't think anything has changed in the interim: www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/9guwxc/minecraft_nintendo_switch_online_unofficial_faq/It is a bit weird how some games you'd expect to need a membership just... don't. Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel doesn't, for instance (or at least it didn't a couple months ago but I doubt they'd change that so randomly), even though the majority of its gameplay is online with other players, just like Minecraft...

The rule of thumb is that if the game is free, online play is free. If you need to buy the game, you need the online sub to play online.
There are a couple of exceptions. Most notably Tetris 99, Pac-Man 99 and the NES, SNES, N64 and Mega Drive games, as they are subscription bonuses.
I think Uno is free to play online too, even though its not free, but don't quote me on that.

Thought I might download a new game to take on holiday. But the switch store is out of commission for three days, so I guess I won't.

Thanks for the info on minecraft/online guys. No way I'm paying a monthly fee for my kid in the living room to be able to play minecraft with my kid in the dining room, so screw that. Not even sure what I'd be paying for. And if we wanted to do Realms we'd have to pay *two* monthly fees. Nintendo's online bullshit has to be the most needlessly complex and confusing thing ever. Thought I might download a new game to take on holiday. But the switch store is out of commission for three days, so I guess I won't. You could buy a physical one. Boy that sounds weird...

Just letting everyone know, apparently Xenoblade 3 was leaked a couple days ago so be careful not to run into spoilers (thankfully I didn't catch any myself, a YouTube channel I frequent posted a warning about it). Would be a pity to get spoiled so close to release

I saw the article headline on NintendoLife. But I'm even avoiding all the official trailers etc. so I'm good (even the algorithm doesn't know I'm interested in it )

I just got triangle strategy for my birthday but couldn't resist nabbing this too for Ā£38 via Currys. I've already got way too much to play!
Kind of avoiding reviews, but the DF tech analysis pushed me over the edge.

Why did I start a playthrough of RDR2 when this was about to drop - foolish!
Honestly so excited for Xeno 3 - the Wii original is my favourite JRPG ever and Chronicles X and 2 had some great ideas and moments but didn't hit the same mark.
This looks like it could be the best of the lot - Monolith Soft, you absolute beauties.

What other game is this most like that I may have played before?

In terms of the world and enemies they're a little like Final Fantasy 12, large open areas and the enemies roam around visibly for you to target and engage (or avoid, as applicable). You could say they're similar to Elden Ring if Elden Ring had loading zones between, say, Limgrave and Liurnia, Limgrave and Caelid and so on.
In terms of fighting it's MMO-ish in that your characters auto-attack in real time and use arts that have cooldown between uses (how that cooldown fills depends on the game). Positioning also matters for some attacks.
The sidequest system is also similar to an MMO's (or, alternatively, the new AssCreeds and the like), you talk to someone, get an objective, go complete it etc. There are some twists on the sidequest formula though, particularly in Xenoblade 1 (you gain affinity with areas that unlock new quests with better rewards, you sometimes get visions that show you alternate paths and so on).
Hopefully this helps, although I've read nothing on 3 so it could be different to the others...

As for whether it's better to start from the beginning or not, the consensus seems to be that Xenoblade 3 easily stands on its own. I personally think it's a good idea to at least be a little familiar with the story of the previous ones, just in case they're connected, but they are rather big games so if you can't be bothered it's probably not necessary to actually play through them if you only want to know the main story beats. Maybe watch a story recap if interested. I'd still advocate playing them just because they're amazing games overall in their own right though, even if their story ends up having absolutely nothing to do with 3's damagedinc

I've not read too much about 3, but I have seen praise for the side quests. I've found the ones in 1 fairly dry and mostly of the "kill 5 of such and such critter" or "collect 8 of this random gem". The stories that go with them do improve the more of them you do, but they did mostly feel like a slog to do. It could be a chill thing to do for a little while and it worked nicely as way of passing a post-work train ride. I can't say they were that engaging though (the fact I completed the game in 65 hours means I probably didn't do many of them).
Hopefully, the praise of them 3 is an indication that they are a bit more interesting.

Youngest is playing Miitopia and has set up his party as his primary school mates. He's now apparently 'dating' his best mate to increase their relationship level, which he finds very funny.

Support for Splatoon 3, being a core Nintendo IP, will last 2 years! I'm happy about that, but this to me says we wont be getting a Switch 2 anytime soon. Maybe a Switch Pro, but not a successor. This game will likely sell 15+ million copies and they wont be keen to drop the game too quickly unless another Splatoon is being prepped for the next console.

Yeah, I noticed that too and wondered if it could be used as any judge as to whether we would have a new Switch before then. Not sure it really can be though. Hopefully, any Switch 2 will be backwards compatible, so it shouldn't stop them supporting games originally made for the old system.
We seem to be getting a few games that are really pushing the Switch to the limits. A Switch 2 would hopefully be able to boost those games without a need for a Switch 2 version being purchased separately.
Of course, this is Nintendo, so that is likely wishful thinking. We will have to rebuy all these games again (and we will, because we can't get enough of that Nintendo).
Anyway, I've said before and I will say it again, Switch 2 will be out between Christmas 2023 and Summer 2024 (which would actually line up with supporting ending for Splatoon 3).
Other thing I noticed was that they referred to the single player as the end of the Splatoon saga.
