Anyone else play Furi? It's not an exclusive but it fits very well with the general indie theme going with the Switch. I love it, but am terrible at it I really enjoyed Furi. I highly recommend Scourgebringer, if you are looking for a similar feel and intensity. It’s amazing.

I'm on holiday at the moment and wanted a tactical RPG. I was playing Banner Saga but it doesn't really grip me - I've tried a few times but it feels so weighty and consequential.
So I noticed Depth of Extinction was on sale. I thought hey why not. So far enjoying it a lot. It combines FTL style zone map with SRPG combat. Sort of like Xcom missions with FTL traversal instead of globe map.
There's a hardcore mode for the masochists but I'm happy to play the standard mode with 1 free revive post mission and retry option. There was one battle with insane difficulty spike but otherwise it's been cool.
Uh so I'd rate it 8/10 - recommended if you want a casual SRPG.
I'd also like recommendations if someone knows a Mechwarrior or Battletech style game for the Switch.

A new (remake) Advance Wars is out in December
I didn't like Wargoove but the others are solid. Not on Switch, but you can probably emulate the Tactics Ogre remake (PSP) on your phone, which is great and a huge game
Langrisser I & II are also on Switch - suppose to be like FE, but don't know much about them myself

I have Langrisser 1&2 and they scratch the classic Fire Emblem itch (before they added all the social and waifu stuff). Played through and enjoyed the first game of the set (has extra routes from original releases and you can use some classic art instead of the modern styles). The leader and troops system is quite fun. Another one on Switch (and PS4)is Brigandine which has a demo and I have only played briefly but is a much larger scale conquer the world style of fantasy SRPG. I actually got a free code for Depth of Extinction from the developer but to my shake haven't tried it yet, I really should give it a try (I almost started it last night coincidentally).

Yeah, I really miss the old Fire Emblem. They've even ditched the weapon triangle, which has killed a lot of the strategy. Really feels like new Fre Emblems are social sims first, SRPGs second. I only finished one of the 3DS ones because of that. I did enjoy Three Houses - finished it twice, BE and GD - but can't be bothered to do all that monastry stuff again, even though I'm in the mood for FE and would like to see the final arc. I wouldn't be surprised if timing wise, you spend more time at the monastery than in battles. Would be great if they included a mode that had you just playing through the campaign like the classic games. Shouldn't be that difficult really

Fire Emblems scare me. I think I read some reviews in the past that were all like 'don't get attached to your characters because they will all die in combat and you ain't getting them back'.
I've got Valk Chronicles 4, it also didn't really grab me. The combat is weird!

There's a casual mode where people can't die, you just lose them for the current mission. You can also just reload a save and do the mission again if you play it normally. For me, the dying thing has always just meant completing a mission without someone dying. I'd never continue if they did
edit: the casual mode is separate from difficulty as well, so you can play with perma death on or off on any difficulty
There's some Disgaea games on Switch as well. They're more time sinks than anything. I don't think they're particularly challenging in the typical sense, it's all just grinding. If it's character building you enjoy, you might like it. The first game has a fun story and good cast

Wargroove should have been great, but I felt the level design was really weak compared to Advanced Wars. You either dominated a map or got blindsided and obliterated. I kinda lost motivation 2/3rds of the way through the campaign.
I'm really chuffed Advance Wars is coming back. Even with the less charming visuals.

I found it a bit charmless and it felt like it was trying to be just different enough from Advance Wars to be jarring that things didn't work the same way. I didn't like the attack animations either - the AW ones are great. Don't mind the new AW graphics from what I remember, it was just the infantry that looked a bit funny
I also hope that if we get a proper sequel, they don't Fire Emblemify it with dating elements. I remember reading somewhere that the reason they haven't made a new one yet is because they don't know how to squeeze the relationship stuff in. Kind of feels like the main demographic for these games is no longer the people who actually want strategy games

Oh yeah, I quite like the new visuals. Just the old ones are definitely better. The first game is also incredibly well balanced in terms of teaching you how to play the games.

The monastery stuff has pretty much put me off giving Three Houses a go so far even though I pre-ordered it (and grabbed the expansion pass). Which is odd as I don't mind the Persona 3/4/5 and Tokyo Xanadu stuff. Langrisser has its own weapon triangle with extra bits...
Sadly FE Awakening was a double-edged sword with it keeping the series viable but introducing the relationship crap (I have nothing against the pre-Awakening in battle social link stuff, just the out of battle stuff.
I had forgotten about Valkyrie Chronicles, which plays pretty uniquely. Still need to finish one of them as I enjoy them but get sidetracked.

Although I agree with you about not liking the social stuff, it's implemented in a way that doesn't feel tacked on. I did enjoy my first 2 playthroughs quite a bit

I do plan to get around to it and won't let that side completely put me off. It is just the least appealing part of the package. Also still need to finish Echoes and Birthright (plus others I have almost no progress on throughout the whole series) (I also seem to recall stopping the original GBA English release (7 IIRC) almost at the end so that might be worth finishing off too).
And then there is Langrisser 1/2...
Thankfully I am not too interested in the Disgaea series as I was buying the first few but not playing them nor caring about playing them.

It should be have been great, but just... wasn't. By no means a bad game, but one which somehow managed to fall far short of its potential. I can't wait for proper Advance Wars!

Still, I'm mostly in a sci-fi groove, that's why I was asking if someone has recommendations for games in the vein of Mechwarrior or Battletech. Into the Breach is probably it. There's just so many smaller games / mobile ports so maybe someone had come across a hidden gem

If you like Final Fantasy tactics there is Fell Seal Arbiters Mark. I bought it but haven't played it yet but the reviews say it's excellent.

There are also the NIS Classics pairs of SRPG games (not sci-fi though), which pair Soul Nomad with Phantom Brave on vol 1 and the upcoming vol 2 having ZHP and Makai Kingdom.
Again games I own on PS2 and haven't really played so I skipped the Switch re-released. They are all the enhanced versions with extra content that was PSP exclusive at the time though.
Going on a slight tangent there was Wasteland 2 on Switch which is a western RPG with tactical combat but no idea how good a port it is. Does fill the sci-fi requirement though.

Yeah, not sure how good the port is. I've done two playthroughs of Wasteland 2 on PC so the game is very good at least.
They could release the Square mech SRPG Front Mission games. Damn, anyone played the side scrolling Front Mission Gun Hazard? It combined RPG elements and partially customisable mech with side scrolling missions. You could even hop out of your mech and pootle about on foot to reach certain objectives. It was very cool.

It would be nice if Squenix follows their Saga remasters with some Front Mission ones, particularly the unlocalised ones like 2, 5 and the 2089s (I know 5 and 2 have fan translations but the latter was incomplete IIRC).
Then we have our futuristic mech-SRPGs...

Ordered the new Warioware game for the wife. Just under £28 from Currys using a code and discount via employee rewards. She loves the demo.

Quake 1. It's ruddy great, I've clocked in over 10 hours so far. There's something about it working particularly well as a portable game. The levels being 10 minutes or so in length, the easy quick saves. It's very nimble the shooting is satisfying. The new content is great, and there's a lot there for 8 quid.
I didn't expect to be playing so much of it, especially considering I have it for naught on Game Pass. It's just really addictive.
